Financial Aid
Eighty-five percent of all undergraduate students receive some type of financial assistance. The Mines financing program has resources totaling more than $27.51 million, including:
- $11.2 million in federal, state and Mines grants and
- scholarships
- $575,000 of work-study funds available for students
- $13.7 million awarded in student loans
- $2 million in scholarships awarded to students by outside donors
Admissions
Undergraduate admissions at Mines is highly selective. Nearly 8,000 students vie each year for 900 spots in the freshman class. Mines applicants’ average scores include 1260 on the SAT, 28 on the ACT and a 3.7 GPA.
More than 1,00 graduate students from around the world create a stimulating environment that enriches the Mines educational experience. Modern research facilities including 26 specialized centers, a strong interdisciplinary teaching and research focus and low student-to-faculty ratio offer a personalized education and encourage students to investigate problems from real-world perspectives. Mines’ reputation and high admission standards, as well as its alumni network in industry, government and academic institutions, contribute to a high placement rate.
Research
Research activities at Mines extend from traditional areas such as fossil energy and geophysical exploration to new frontiers in renewable energy and microfluidic devices. Many opportunities exist for undergraduates as well as graduate students to conduct cutting-edge research.
In 2009, Mines received awards totaling more than $51.4 million with nearly half funded by private industry.
