Raul Varela

Varela to be inducted into RMAC Hall of Fame
GOLDEN, Colo.
(June 27, 2008) - Former Colorado School of Mines men's basketball player Raul Varela will be inducted into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame during the seventh annual RMAC Hall of Fame Banquet on Saturday evening, July 12th, 2008, at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs. Varela, who played at Mines from 1992-93 to 1995-96, was inducted into the CSM Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003. Selected as the RMAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year as a senior in 1995-96, Varela was a three-time All-American selection during his collegiate career. Varela, who averaged 24.1 points, 3.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game during his career at CSM, will become the fourth representative from Colorado School of Mines enshrined into the RMAC Hall of Fame. CSM baseball receives commitment from 11
GOLDEN, Colo.
(June 24, 2008) - A grand total of 11 student-athletes have committed to begin playing baseball for Colorado School of Mines in 2009, as announced today by Head Coach Jerrid Oates. "We are really looking forward to the arrival of this year's signing class," said Oates, who was selected as the RMAC Baseball Co-Coach of the Year in 2008 following his first season at CSM. "This group of players will really help us to continue building on the success we enjoyed in 2008." MORE




Mark Husted

Husted named Academic All-America by ESPN The Magazine
GOLDEN, Colo.
(June 23, 2008) - Colorado School of Mines track & field athlete Mark Husted has been named Third Team Academic All-America (College Division) by ESPN The Magazine, as announced today by CoSIDA. Husted, a distance runner from Westminster, Colo. (Northglenn High School), also earned First Team Academic All-District VII (College Division) honors earlier this month. The owner of a 3.86 cumulative GPA who is majoring in Electrical Engineering at Mines, Husted is a four-time Academic All-RMAC performer, as well. As a junior in 2007-08, Husted garnered All-American honors three times, including twice at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships and once at the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. Marc Schiechl

Football's Schiechl honored by Lindy's Magazine
GOLDEN, Colo.
(June 18, 2008) - CSM's Marc Schiechl has earned Pre-Season Second Team All-NCAA Division II honors from Lindy's Magazine for the 2008 season. A 6'3", 220-lb. sophomore defensive lineman, Schiechl established new individual single-season school records for tackles-for-a-loss (17.5) and sacks (13.5) as a redshirt freshman in 2007. The owner of 47 total tackles (18 solo) in 2007, Schiechl also finished third in the nation (NCAA Division II) and second in the RMAC in sacks per game (1.13) last fall. An NFF First Team All-Colorado, Second Team All-RMAC and Second Team All-Southwest Region selection last year, Schiechl was selected as the 2007 RMAC Defensive Freshman of the Year. MORE
