MINES MEN'S HOOPS FALLS AT FORT HAYS, 82-69, IN RMAC QUARTERS HAYS, Kan. The fifth-seeded Colorado Mines mens basketball team was handed an 82-69 setback at fourth-seeded Fort Hays State in the quarterfinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers jumped out to a 17-7 lead after eight minutes and claimed a 32-23 lead at the break. FHSU would extend its lead to 57-37 midway through the second half only to see Mines use a 29-16 run to slice its deficit to seven points (73-66) with 1:49 to play on a jumper from freshman guard Kevin Wagstaff (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart). However, the Tigers would hold on and settle for the 13-point win. CSM was led by junior forward Farris Broussard (San Jose, Calif./Independence) who tallied 17 points, five steals, four blocks and two boards. Sophomore guard Stephen Bahl (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) added 15 points and three rebounds, while sophomore guard Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana) recorded 11 points and four rebounds. The Tigers (22-6) were paced by George Walker and Melro McKelvey who each produced double-doubles. Walker registered 16 points and 14 boards, while McKelvey added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Dominique Townes scored a game-high 18 points for the Tigers, who outrebounded Mines, 51-33, including 24 on the offensive end. Colorado Mines concludes the 2002-03 campaign at 18-10 overall and 12-7 in conference play. The 18 wins are the third most in a single season in program history. Fort Hays advances to the RMAC semifinals and will play top-seeded Nebraska-Kearney Saturday at 1:30 pm at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. -- orediggers -- CSM MEN'S BASKETBALL TOPS REGIS, 82-67, TO CLINCH DENVER, Colo. Colorado Mines opened the second half on a 21-8 run and claimed an 82-67 victory at Regis in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mens basketball action Saturday afternoon to clinch the number five seed in next week's conference tournament. Leading 38-34 at the break, CSM opened the first 10 minutes of the second half by outscoring the Rangers, 21-8, to take a 59-42 lead with 10:20 to play in the game. Mines sophomore guard Stephen Bahl (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) scored 15 points, while sophomore guard Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana) added 15 points and six boards. Junior forward Farris Broussard (San Jose, Calif./Independence) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds for Mines and freshman guard Kevin Wagstaff (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) totaled eight points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists. Mines outrebounded the Rangers, 44-30, including 19-7 on the offensive end. Regis (12-15, 5-14) was led by Jeremy Bennett who scored a game-best 17 points. Julian Biglow registered 10 points and four boards, while Torrance Toomer tallied six points and a game-high nine rebounds. With the win, Colorado Mines moved to 18-9 overall and 12-7 in the conference. The Orediggers will open tournament play with a quarterfinal round game at Fort Hays State on Wednesday at a time to be determined. Colorado School of Mines sophomore guards Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana) and Stephen Bahl (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) combined for 48 points to lead the Orediggers to a 75-67 win at Colorado Christian on Tuesday night. The victory also clinched a spot in next weeks Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament for Mines. The opponent, time and location of the game will be determined after this weekends games. Mines, which trailed 31-25 at halftime, used a 23-9 run to open the second half and claim a 48-40 lead with 14:32 left. CSM (17-9, 11-7 RMAC) then weathered three runs by the Cougars to hold on for the win. Luedtke scored his 28 points on 8-of-17 shooting from three-point land and also tallied eight boards and three steals. Bahl scored his 20 on 6-of-16 shooting, while freshman guard Kevin Wagstaff (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) added 10 points and a career-best seven rebounds. The Cougars (9-17, 6-12 RMAC) were led by Clinton Fuller who registered 11 points and nine rebounds. Brent Hobba (16), Matt Vaughn (11) and Curi Yutzy (10) also reached double figures in scoring for Colorado Christian. Mines will conclude its regular season with a 1:00 pm game at Regis on Saturday afternoon. -- orediggers -- CSM MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES AT METRO STATE, 91-63 DENVER, Colo. The Colorado Mines mens basketball team fell to 16-9 overall and 10-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 91-63 setback at seventh-ranked Metro State Saturday evening at the Auraria Events Center. Metro (22-3, 15-2 RMAC) claimed a 41-24 lead at the half as Luke Kendall and Patrick Mutombo combined for 25 of the Roadrunner points. MSCD would extend its lead to as many as 30 points in the second half. Mines sophomore guard Stephen Bahl (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) was the only Oredigger to register double figures as he scored 13 points. It was his 25th straight game with double figures this season. Senior center Mike McNish (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview) added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds, while junior forward Farris Broussard (San Jose, Calif./Independence) contributed eight points and four rebounds. Kendall led all scorers with 31 points on 11-of-21 shooting, including 5-of-10 from three-point range. Mutombo finished with 19 points and Lester Strong added nine points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Despite a game-high 31 points by Colorado Mines sophomore guard Stephen Bahl (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield), the Orediggers were dealt a 92-82 setback at Chadron State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mens basketball action Thursday night. Chadron claimed a 42-32 lead at the half, but had the lead cut to one point (44-43) as Mines opened the first three minutes of the second half on an 11-2 run. Leading 58-56 with 12:31 to play in the game, the Eagles would go on a 9-1 run to claim a 10 point lead with 9:28 to play. Mines (16-8, 10-6 RMAC) would cut the lead to two points on a three-pointer by Bahl with 2:20 to play, but the Eagles responded on the next possession as Brandon Doke hit a three to push the Chadron lead to five points. Chadron then hit 7-of-12 free throws in the final minute to ice the game. Bahl tallied his 31 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the floor, including 7-of-14 from three-point range. He also grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists. The Nebraska-Kearney mens basketball team barely kept its perfect season alive with a 72-70 win over Colorado Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action in front of a sold out, standing room only crowd in Volk Gymnasium Saturday night. Mines raced out to a quick 8-0 lead and extended its lead to 30-20 with 7:30 left on a three-pointer from senior forward Justin Buckmaster (Portland, Ore./Jesuit). However, the Lopers, ranked second in the country, responded with a 14-8 run over the next six minutes to cut its deficit to four points (38-34). But a three-pointer with seven seconds to play in the first half by Mines sophomore guard Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana) gave CSM a 41-34 lead at the break. UNK opened the second half on a 15-6 run to take its first lead of the game, 49-47, with 14:10 to play. The Lopers (23-0, 15-0 RMAC) extended their lead to 62-53 midway through the second half on a layup from Nick Branting. Trailing by six (66-60) with 5:56 to play, the Orediggers went on a 10-3 run to regain the lead with 1:18 to play at 70-69. A jumper by the Lopers Richard Dionne on the next possession, a Mines turnover and Marty Levinsons front end of a one and one gave UNK a 72-70 lead with 16 seconds left. Levinson missed the second attempt, but the Lopers retained possession as Mines knocked the ball out of bounds. CSM (16-7, 10-5 RMAC) then fouled Chad Sheffield who missed the front end of the one and one which was rebounded by Mines junior forward Farris Broussard (San Jose, Calif./Independence). UNK used its last foul to give with two seconds left and gave Mines the ball on the sideline. Freshman guard Kevin Wagstaff (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) lofted a pass toward the basket, but Broussard was not able to tip it in as time expired. Luedtke led CSM as he registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards, while sophomore guard Stephen Bahl (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) added 16 points. Buckmaster recorded 11 points and four boards, while senior center Mike McNish (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) added six points seven rebounds. Buckmaster and McNish were playing in their final regular season home games of their careers. UNK was led by Dionne who notched 24 points and seven rebounds. Branting chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Brian Dunagan scored 10. Mines held Nick Svehla, the reinging Co-RMAC Player of the Year to just eight points on 3-of-12 shooting from the floor, and five rebounds in 33 minutes of play. Colorado Mines connected on 16-of-25 (.640) three-point attempts and broke a four-game losing streak with a key 87-71 victory over Fort Hays State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mens basketball action Friday night in Volk Gymnasium. Back on Jan. 31, the Tigers handed Mines a 78-72 loss in Hays, Kan, which broke a school-record 11 game winning streak for the Orediggers. Mines (16-6, 10-4 RMAC), raced out to a 38-29 lead at halftime as it hit 15-of-24 from the field, including 8-of-13 from three-point land. Sophomore guard Stephen Bahl (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) tallied 11 of his game-high 24 points in the opening 20 minutes, including three trifectas. CSM opened a 14-point advantage (47-33) just four minutes into the second half on a layup from junior forward Farris Broussard (San Jose, Calif./Independence). The Tigers responded by cutting their deficit to 56-49 at the 10:25 mark. However, the Orediggers regrouped with a 13-4 run to gain a 69-53 lead with seven minutes to play. The run was capped by a two-handed dunk from sophomore forward Ryan Woodson (Rogers, Ark./Rogers) off an assist by sophomore guard Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana). FHSU (17-5, 9-5 RMAC), never threatened after that. In addition to his 24 points, Bahl tallied two rebounds and two assists. Metro, which is ranked 11th in the country and fourth in the North Central Region, gained the 13-point halftime lead thanks in large part to Luke Kendall who dropped in 11 points in the first stanza. Trailing by 12 points (52-40) with 6:56 to play in the game, Mines, ranked seventh in the North Central Region, would cut its deficit to 56-51 with 3:52 to play on a layup from senior forward Justin Buckmaster (Portland, Ore./Jesuit). However, the Roadrunners pushed their lead back up to eight points with 16 seconds to play and hung on to move to 18-3 overall and 11-2 in the RMAC. Mines (15-6, 9-4 RMAC) was led by sophomore guard Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana) who scored 16 points and grabbed five boards. Chadron States Jeremy Wissing hit a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Eagles to a 73-72 win over Colorado Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mens basketball action Friday night in Volk Gymnasium. It was CSMs first loss at home this season (9-1). Mines (15-4, 9-3 RMAC) raced out to an 8-0 lead as it hit its first four shots of the game and clung to a six-point lead at the break (36-30). However, the Eagles (9-10, 5-7 RMAC) gained their first lead of the contest as Matt Brown hit a three-pointer four minutes into the second half to give his squad a 44-42 advantage. CSM responded with a 7-3 run to gain a two-point lead less than three minutes later as sophomore guard Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana) scored five points in the run. But Chadron responded with a 7-1 run to take its largest lead of the night at 54-50 midway through the second half. The lead would switch hands six more times over the next eight minutes before a jumper by Wissing gave the Eagles a 71-69 lead with 38 seconds to play. However, Oredigger freshman guard Kevin Wagstaff (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) nailed a three-pointer on the next possession to give Mines a one-point lead at 72-71 with 27 seconds to play. That set up Wissings heroics. Luedtke finished with a game-high 26 points, including six three-pointers, five rebounds and four assists. The Nebraska-Kearney mens basketball team connected on 42-of-69 shots (.609) and defeated Colorado Mines, 103-73, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday evening in the Health and Sports Center. The loss drops CSM, ranked fourth in the North Central Region, to 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the RMAC, while UNK, ranked fifth in the nation and first in the region, remains unbeaten at 18-0 overall and 11-0 in the conference. The Lopers are also the only undefeated team in all of Division II. CSM scored the first four points of the game, but UNK would grab the lead for good as a jumper by Richard Dionne gave the Lopers a 10-8 lead with 15:17 to play in the first half. CSM raced out to a 20-8 lead at the 12:41 mark of the first half as sophomore guards Stephen Bahl (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) and Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana) each hit a pair of three-pointers. However, FHSU would outscore Mines, 28-12 over the remainder of the first half to claim a four-point lead (36-32) at the break. Mines claimed its largest lead of the second half as a layup by Bahl gave his squad a 56-51 advantage with 8:25 to play. However, the Tigers would go on an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to take the lead for good (59-58) with 5:07 remaining on a three-pointer by Jim Rhodes. It was Bahls second consecutive 30-point effort as he scored 36 in a win over Colorado Christian on Tuesday night. Mines (15-2, 9-0 RMAC) raced out to a 21-8 lead midway through the first half, only to see the Rangers (10-6, 3-5 RMAC) cut their deficit to four points, 39-35, at the break. Regis came out and began the second half on a 9-4 run to claim its first lead of the game since the 19:06 mark of the first half on a jumper from Casey Fisher with 15:56 to play. The score would be tied eight more times over the next nine minutes of action until a jumper from CSM senior center Mike McNish (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview) gave Mines a 62-61 lead with five minutes to play. CCU (7-9, 4-4 RMAC) gained a 15-point lead midway through the first half and led by as many as 16 in the half. The Cougars led 39-27 at the half, marking the second time in the last three games that CSM has erased a double-digit halftime lead and claimed a win. Mines (14-2, 8-0 RMAC) opened the second half on a 17-3 run to cut its deficit to one point with 14:36 left in the game and then took the lead for good with 9:50 remaining as sophomore guard Matt Luedtke (Ronan, Mont./University of Montana) converted a four-point play. The Orediggers pushed their lead to as many as 10 points from that point. The Colorado School of Mines mens basketball team completed a seven-game sweep of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Western Division with a 93-86 victory over Fort Lewis on Saturday evening at the FLC Fieldhouse. The win improved CSM to 13-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the conference and ran its win streak to nine games, the second best stretch in school history. The Skyhawks slip to 6-9 overall and 4-3 in the RMAC. Mines raced out to a quick 12-3 lead three minutes into the contest, bur FLC responded with an 18-3 run to claim a 21-15 lead with 14:21 to play in the first half. From that point, CSM closed the first half by outscoring the Skyhawks, 39-24 to claim a 54-45 advantage at the break. The Skyhawks opened the second half on a 19-3 run to regain the lead (64-57) with 14:42 to play in the contest, but Mines would regain a 72-71 lead midway through the final stanza and push its lead to as many as 12 points and FLC would not threaten from there. The Colorado School of Mines mens basketball team overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and improved to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 66-59 victory over Adams State on Friday evening at Plachy Hall. The victory also extends Mines winning streak to eight games, its longest streak since the 1980-81 squad won 10 in a row. The Grizzlies (4-8, 2-4 RMAC) jumped out quickly as they led 21-6 with 7:25 left in the first half and maintained a double-digit lead up until halftime. ASC extended its lead to 16 points early in the second half as Collin Johnston made a layup to give the Grizzlies a 36-20 advantage just one minute into the second half.
