THE HEAD COACH
Pryor Orser is in his second season at the helm of the Oredigger men’s basketball program. He claims a 7-21 overall mark and a 3-16 record in the RMAC during his time in Golden. Prior to coming to CSM, Orser served one year as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Montana in Missoula. Orser’s previous coaching experience also includes a four-year tenure at Northwest College in Wyo., where he worked as the head of the women’s basketball program and an assistant to the men’s basketball program, At Northwest, Orser led the women’s squad to the most wins in school history (22) during his fourth and final season, an improvement of 20 games from his first season on the sideline at Northwest.

GOOD START: Sophomore guard Matt Luedtke, a transfer from the Universityof Montana got off to a great start in his frist two games for Mines over the weekend. In the two victories, he scored 49 points, including a gamehigh 35 in a 98-93 overtime victory over Mesa State. Luedtke connected on 11-of-31 three point attempts over the weekend and also contributed eight boards and four assists in the two wins.

WANNA BE A “BAHLER”: Some people dream big of being a baller, but in the case of CSM sophomore guard Stephen Bahl, he is a big-time baller. The reigning Co-RMAC Freshman of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-RMAC pick last season, Bahl picked up right where he left off last season as he led Mines to a pair of wins over the weekend. In the victory over Northern Colorado, he went for a game-high 28 points and then dropped 31 on Mesa State in a 98-93 win the following night. In the two games, he shot 54 percent (20-37) from the field and 46 percent (5-11) from three point range.

IT’S RAINING THREE’S: The Oredigger’s attempted an amazing 63 three-point field goals in their first two games. In addition, the team hit on 22 of those attempts, good enough for 35 percent.

IN THE CLUTCH: Junior forward Farris Broussard, who shot just 44 percent from the free throw line last season, hit two big ones in Friday’s one-point win over Northern Colorado. Broussard was fouled after catching a full-court inbounds pass with 1.2 seconds left and CSM trailing by one-point. He went to the line and sank both ends of the 1-and-1 to lift his team to the win.

YOUNG GUNS: The Colorado Mines roster contains just two seniors, both of whom were walk-ons to the program, and just one junior. The other seven players are in either their first or second season with the squad.

WAGS TO RICHES: Freshman point guard Kevin Wagstaff performed extremely well in his collegiate debut. The Colorado Springs native dished out 13 assists and turned the ball over just five times in guiding Mines to a pair of wins. After going scoreless in the first game, Wagstaff hit on 4-of-8 three pointers and tallied 13 points in the win against Mesa State.

GOING FOR FOUR: With two wins this week, Mines will have four wins this season, a feat it did not accomplish until Jan. 12 during last year’s season.

FROM THE GRIDIRON TO THE HARDWOOD: The Oredigger basketball team has two players who have made the transition from the CSM football team which ended its season just two weeks ago. Redshirt freshmen Chad Friehauf and Cole Henderson each saw valuable minutes in the opening two games after helping lead the CSM football team to a 7-4 mark. Friehauf, the starting quarterback, played a pivotal role in the Oredigger’s 81-80 victory over Northern Colorado on Friday night as he threw a full-court pass to junior Farris Broussard who was fouled with 1.2 seconds left and proceeded to make both free throws to lift Mines to a one-point win.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Grandview enters the week at 0-5 overall and is taking a trip to Colorado over the Thanksgiving Break that begins in Golden and will see the Vikings play at Regis and Metro State. Mike Brinker leads the team at 12.7 points per game.

South Dakota State entered the season ranked third in the Division II Bulletin Preseason Poll after going 25-6 last season and ending the year as the North Central Region Runner-Up. The Jackrabbits opened the season by defeating Truman State, 75-54, before falling to Northwest Missouri, 71-69. Austin Hansen totaled 29 points in the two games.

Augustana opened its 2002-03 season with a split at the Western State Tournament over the weekend. The Vikings opened play with an 80-64 win over the host school before falling to Adams State, 84-78, on Saturday. Justin VanMeeteren scored 37 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the split. Prior to heading to South Dakota State, the Vikings will host the University of Minnesota-Morris on Monday evening.
