THE HEAD COACH
Pryor Orser is in his second season at the helm of the Oredigger men’s basketball program. He claims a 16-23 overall mark and an 8-16 record in the RMAC during his time in Golden. Prior to coming to CSM, Orser served one year as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Montana in Missoula. Orser’s previous coaching experience also includes a four-year tenure at Northwest College in Wyo., where he worked as the head of the women’s basketball program and an assistant to the men’s basketball program, At Northwest, Orser led the women’s squad to the most wins in school history (22) during his fourth and final season, an improvement of 20 games from his first season on the sideline at Northwest.

LAST TIME OUT (1/11/03): The Colorado School of Mines men’s basketball team outscored New Mexico Highlands, 55-39, in the second half and cruised to a 101-80 victory in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference basketball action on Saturday night in Volk Gymnasium. CSM claimed a 32-20 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half, but NMHU used a 15-1 run over the game’s next four minutes to take its first lead of the contest at 35-33 with 4:16 left in the first half. The Orediggers closed the first half on a 13-6 run to claim a five-point advantage at the break (46-41). Mines then broke the game open as it began the second half on an 11-3 run to take a 57-44 lead three minutes into the second half. The Cowboys would not threaten after that as CSM pushed its lead to as many as 27 points in the second half. Sophomore guard Stephen Bahl tallied a game-high 23 points, including five three-pointers, while freshman guard Kevin Wagstaff added a career-high 18 points, seven assists and four rebounds, For the game, Mines shot 54 percent from the field and 58 percent from the three point line.

HE’S A BALLER: Sophomore guard Stephen Bahl has lived up to his name this season as the Broomfield, Colo., native is leading the RMAC and is seventh in the nation with 24.4 points per game. In addition, he has scored in double figures in all 13 games this season, including a career-high 43 points in a 77-69 victory over Augustana on Nov. 30. Bahl, the RMAC East Division Player of the Week on Dec. 17, is shooting 49 percent from the field, 48 percent from three-point land and 81 percent from the charity stripe this season.

WAGS TO RICHES: Freshman guard Kevin Wagstaff has played extremely well in his first season of college basketball. The Rampart High School graduate is fourth on the team in scoring at 9.4 points per game and tallied a career-high 18 points in Saturday’s win over New Mexico Highlands. He is also ranked fourth in the RMAC in assists (4.5) and is grabbing 3.1 boards per contest. Wagstaff is shooting 46 percent from the three-point line as he has connected on 28-of-61 attempts this season.

FIVE ALIVE: Mines is currently off to its best start in school history at 11-2 and has also attained its highest ranking in program history as the squad is currently the number five ranked team in the North Central Region.

YOUNG GUNS: The Colorado Mines roster contains just two seniors, both of whom were walk-ons to the program, and one junior. The other seven players are in either their first or second season with the program.

BRING THE WOOD: Oredigger sophomore center Ryan Woodson has returned to form after missing the first five games of the season with a knee injury. A native of Rogers, Ark., Woodson is averaging 7.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per night in eight games off the bench. In Saturday’s victory over New Mexico Highlands, Woodson tallied 18 points, one off his career high, and also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Woodson also notched a team-leading seven boards in Friday’s win over Southern Colorado. For the weekend, he averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

FROM THE GRIDIRON TO THE HARDWOOD: Redshirt freshman guard Chad Friehauf has been a key performer for CSM since he concluded the 2002 football season as CSM’s quarterback. On the gridiron, he was an Honorable Mention All-RMAC honoree as he completed 173-of-280 passes for 2,197 yards and 21 touchdowns. In his first season with the Oredigger basketball team, Friehauf has played in all 13 games, including two starts, and is averaging 5.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

BLOCK PARTY: Mines is the top-ranked team in the RMAC in blocked shots with 65 swats in 13 games for an average of 5.0 per game. Senior center Mike McNish leads the way as he is ranked second in the conference with 1.6 blocks per game. Junior forward Farris Broussard is eighth in the RMAC (1.2 bpg), while senior forward Justin Buckmaster is ninth (1.1 bpg).

TIME FOR EVERYONE: The Oredigger’s have nine players who are averaging more than 10 minutes per game this season.

IN HEAVEN WITH SEVEN: CSM is on a seven-game winning streak marking the longest streak for the men’s hoops program since the 1987-88 squad won Mines record 10 in a row.

HOME SWEET HOME: CSM is a perfect 7-0 at home this season and is averaging 97 points per game in the confines of Volk Gymnasium. Mines has topped the 100-point mark on three occasions at home this year.

THEN THERE WERE TWO: CSM is one of two undefeated teams in the RMAC heading into play this weekend. Mines and Nebraska-Kearney, ranked sixth in the nation, are both 5-0 in conference play this season and both are members of the RMAC East Division.

SCOUTING THIS WEEK’S COMPETITION:
Adams State enters the week at 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the RMAC after dropping road contests at Nebraska-Kearney (107-64) and Fort Hays (70-51) last weekend. For the season, the Grizzlies are led by Ben Ellsworth who posts 12.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Collin Johnston averages 11.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per night, while Brandon Norris chips in 11.2 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per contest. As a team, Adams State is shooting 44 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range and 69 percent from the free throw line. The Grizzlies average 67.5 points and surrender 75.5 per game.

Fort Lewis enters play this week at 5-8 overall and tied for the lead in the RMAC West Division at 3-2. The Skyhawks are coming off road losses at Fort Hays State (93-79) and Nebraska-Kearney (91-85) over the weekend. Zack Cole led the way against FHSU with 23 points, while Kevin Hatch tallied 19 markers against the Lopers. For the season, the Skyhawks are led by Hatch who is ranked 10th in the league in scoring at 16.0 points per game. Trevor Lorz contributes 13.2 points per night, while Kurt Patik averages 10.5 points and is fifth in the conference at 7.9 boards per game. As a team, Fort Lewis is shooting 49 percent from the floor, 40 percent from three-point land and 72 percent from the charity stripe. The Skyahwks average 84.3 points and five up 81.1 points per game.

LAST TIME VS. ADAMS STATE (12/17/01): Ben Ellswoth scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Adams State to an 84-75 victory over Colorado Mines at Plachy Hall. The Grizzlies led 36-34 at the half, but Mines managed to knot the game at 44-44 four minutes into the second half. From there, ASC would go on a mini 6-0 run to claim a 50-44 lead with 13:57 remaining and Mines would not threaten the rest of the way. Justin Buckmaster led CSM with a career-high 14 points, while Luke Michael added 12 points. Grizzly guard Daniel Trujillo
took game-high scoring honors with 16 points off the bench, while Brian Barthule chipped in with 15.

LAST TIME VS. FORT LEWIS (1/10/02): Fort Lewis outscored Colorado Mines, 39-28, in the second half to break a 28-28 tie at the half and claimed a 67-56 victory in Durango, Colo. Trevor Lorz led the Skyhawks with 20 points as he connected on 8-of-11 shots, including 3-of-5 from three-point land. Kevin Hatch added 14 points, while Kurt Patik chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds. Farris Broussard led the Oredigger’s with 12 points and five rebounds, while Tim Frey had 11 points and four assists in the losing effort.
