MINES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO HIGHLANDS, 63-58

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines women's basketball team had its school-record nine-game winning streak snapped by New Mexico Highlands, 63-58, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday night in Volk Gymnasium.

NMHU (6-5, 3-3 RMAC) raced out to a 16-2 lead midway through the first half and extended the lead to 18 points at halftime (28-10). Highlands would extend its lead to as many as 21 points (47-26) in the second half, but the Orediggers would not go away as they sliced the lead to 58-55 with 45 seconds to play on a pair of free throws by junior center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa Springs, Colo./Pagosa Springs).

However, the Cowgirls hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

CSM (10-3, 5-1 RMAC) senior guard Kristin Horkey (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) registered a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prarie) added 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Tara Podpah led NMHU with 17 points and six boards.

Mines is slated to return to action Thursday night with a 6:00 pm tipoff at CSU-Pueblo.
