MINES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS SEVENTH STRAIGHT, 63-53, DENVER, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines women's basketball team won its seventh straight game, 63-53 in overtime, over Nebraska-Omaha in the second and final day of action at the Metro State Red Lion Christmas Classic at the Auraria Events Center. CSM (8-2) led by five points (46-41) with 5:20 to play in the game, but the Mavericks (9-5) would cut the lead to 50-49 with 2:54 to play. CSM junior center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa Springs, Colo./Pagosa Springs) then split a pair of free throws on the next possession to give Mines a two-point lead, but Omaha's Karen Thies converted a layup with 54 seconds to play to send the game into overtime. In the extra session, Mines scored the first 12 points in claiming the win. It was the third win in overtime for CSM during its winning streak and also the second in as many days after the squad knocked off 22nd-ranked Minnesota Duluth, 63-50, on Wednesday afternoon in the first day of the tournament. Mines senior guard Gina Cornelio (Tucson, Ariz./SalPointe) led her team with a career-high 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Gronewoller added a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 11 boards, while senior guard Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prarie) contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists. UNO was led by J.J. Smith who poured in a game-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Mines will return to action on Jan. 3 when it hosts Upper Iowa at 2:00 pm in Volk Gymnasium. -- OREDIGGERS -- |
