MINES WOMEN'S HOOPS FALLS AT REGIS, 76-71, IN OVERTIME DENVER, Colo. - The Colorado Mines womens basketball team concluded its 2002-03 campaign with a 76-71 overtime loss at Regis in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon. Trailing 63-62, CSM had a chance to win the game on its last possession as sophomore guard Heather Hoops (Golden, Colo./Wheat Ridge) missed a jumper with two seconds left. Mines freshman center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa, Colo./Pagosa Springs) got the rebound and was fouled as she attempted a putback with one second left. Gronewoller hit the first free throw to knot the game at 63-63, but missed the second and the game went to overtime. In the extra session, Ranger senior forward Molly Marrin nailed a three-pointer with 2:04 to play to give her team the lead for good at 72-71. The Rangers then hit four straight free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Mines, which trailed 31-29 at the half, received a career-high 23 points and seven rebounds from freshman forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield). Sophomore guard Kim Kilmer (Merino, Colo./Merino) added a career-best 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Hoops tallied 11 points and four assists. The Rangers (20-7, 15-4 RMAC) were led by Rachel Caligas 16-points, six rebound effort. Marrin added 12 points and four assists, while Kylee Keroher registered eight points and a game-high 10 boards. Mines, which trailed 34-28 at the half, was led by freshman center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa, Colo./Pagosa Springs) who tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 11 boards. The Eagles, who led 27-20 at the half, scored the first five points of the second half to push their lead to 14 points. After a pair of baskets by Mines, Chadron State would score the next 12 points to take a 46-24 lead with 13:44 left in the game and never be threatened. Colorado Mines (4-20, 2-14 RMAC) was paced by freshman forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) who totaled a game-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds and two assists. The Nebraska-Kearney womens basketball team won for the 16th straight time in a 61-53 triumph over Colorado Mines in Rocky Mountain Athetic Conference action Saturday night in Volk Gymnasium. The Orediggers hung tough with Kearney, ranked second in the North Central Region this week, throughout the first half and claimed a 28-24 lead at the break. Mines shot 50 percent (13-26) from the field and held UNK to 10-of-28 (.357) shooting from the foloor in the opening 20 minutes. CSM also outrebouned the Lopers, 22-11, in the first half. However, UNK opened up its largest lead of the game (51-40) with 7:45 to play. Mines was able to cut its deficit to as little as five points with 2:12 left, but the Lopers hung on for the win. Mines (4-19, 3-11 RMAC) was led by freshman center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa, Colo./Pagosa Springs) who tallied 18 points, seven boards and four blocked shots. From there, the Tigers would go on an 8-0 run to claim its largest lead of the contest (44-31) with seven minutes to play and the Orediggers would not threaten from there. With the score tied at 22-22 with 6:27 to play in the first half, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to claim its largest lead of the first half (28-22) with 4:27 to play and held a 33-28 lead at halftime. Chadron State opened the second half on a 7-2 run to claim its largest lead of the contest (40-30) just two minutes into the second stanza. Trailing by eight points (56-48) with 5:24 left in the game, the Orediggers mounted a charge and tied the game at 59-59 with 1:28 remaining as sophomore guard Heather Hoops (Golden, Colo./Wheat Ridge) sank all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt. Gronewoller tied her career-high with 22 points and also added 10 rebounds, while Angel tallied 13 points and tied her career-high with 13 boards. Mines (4-13) jumped out to a 13-5 lead six minutes into the contest only to see the Tigers go on a 14-6 run to knot the game at 19-19 with 7:32 to play in the first half. From there, CSM would outscore the Tigers, 19-8 to take an 11-point lead at halftime. The Orediggers claimed a double-digit lead for a majority of the second half, but received a scare when Colorado College cut its deficit to four points (67-63) with three minutes to play. However, Mines responded by scoring the final nine points of the contest and holding the Tigers without a point over that time. St. Cloud (5-6) claimed a 33-27 lead at halftime and used an 11-4 run over the first six minutes of the first half to take a 46-31 lead with 14:13 left in the game. The Orediggers would not threaten for the remainder of the game. The Colorado School of Mines womens basketball fell to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference with a 54-50 setback to CU-Colorado Springs in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference basketball action on Saturday night in Volk Gymnasium. CSM claimed an 18-11 lead with eight minutes to play in the first half, but the Mountain Lions used a 9-3 run to close the half down by just one point (21-20). UCCS (2-5, 2-0 RMAC) then opened the second half on a 20-11 run to claim its largest lead of the contest with eight minutes to play (42-30). CSM cut the deficit to three points on one occasion, but would get no closer the rest of the game. The Orediggers were led by sophomore guard Katie Gaudutis (Odessa, Mo./Odessa) who was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field for 13 points. Junior center Katie Cunio (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) added 11 points and nine boards, while freshman center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa, Colo./Pagosa Springs) registered six points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Western States Melissa Donley hit a jumper with eight seconds left to lift the Mountaineers to a 51-49 victory over Colorado School of Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference womens basketball action on Friday night in Volk Gymnasium. Western State (2-7, 1-0 RMAC) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but Mines responded with a 15-6 run to take its first lead of the game (15-12) midway through the first half. However, the Mountaineers closed out the first half on a 15-4 run to take a 27-19 lead at the break. The Orediggers opened the first half with a 14-4 run to regain a 33-31 lead with 13 minutes to play in the game. After a Western State basket knotted the game at 33-33, CSM went on an 11-2 run to claim its largest lead of the game (44-35) with seven minutes to play. However, Western mounted another charge and claimed a 49-47 lead with two minutes remaining. A jumper by CSM sophomore guard Kristen Horkey (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) netted the game for the fourth and final time (49-49) and set up the heroics of Donley to end the game. Horkey led Mines with a career-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and also notched two steals. Mesa State improved to 6-0 with the win. CSM claimed its largest lead of the game (18-12) midway through the first half, but the Mavericks ended the half on a 14-7 run to take a 26-25 lead at the intermission. Mesa took a 36-31 lead five minutes into the second half, however, the Orediggers responded with a 5-0 run to knot the game at 36-36 with just under 13 minutes to play. CSM freshman center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa, Colo./Pagosa Springs) keyed the run with a three-point play. From there, the Mavericks would outscore CSM 16-7 over the next seven minutes to take their largest lead of the game (52-43) with five minutes to play. Mines, which led 25-20 at halftime, opened the second half on a 9-2 run to claim a 34-22 lead with 15 minutes to play. However, Lynn used a 15-5 run over the next five minutes of action to cut its deficit to two points (39-37) with 10 minutes to play. But once again, the Orediggers responded their own 9-1 run in the next two minutes to claim a 48-38 lead with just under nine minutes to play and Lynn would not threaten the rest of the way. CSM WOMEN'S HOOPS FALLS TO GRANDVIEW, 65-59 GOLDEN, Colo. The Colorado School of Mines womens basketball team dropped to 0-3 on the season with a 65-59 setback to Grandview College on Tuesday night in Volk Gymnasium. CSM claimed its largest lead at 34-26 with 1:07 to play in the first half ended the first 20 minutes of play leading 36-30. Grandview was able to cut the CSM lead to five points (49-44) with 11:25 left in the game and then used an 11-5 run over the next five minutes to take a 55-50 lead with just under seven minutes to play. However, Mines responded with a 5-0 run to knot the game at 55-55 with 3:24 to play, but Grandview would outscore the Orediggers 10-4 over the final three minutes of play to earn the victory and improve to 8-2 this season. Mines was led by freshman forward Heather Angel (Golden, Colo./Chatfield) who notched her first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Orediggers fell behind 31-15 at the half as Lorena Ahumada scored 10 points in the opening 20 minutes for Holy Names and Mines connected on just 5-of-20 shots from the floor. Mines sophomore guard Katie Gaudutis (Odessa, Mo./Odessa) led her squad with nine pointsand five steals, while junior center Katie Cunio (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) tallied eight points and six boards in the losing effort as CSM outrebounded its opponent, 41-39.
