COLORADO MINES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PROBABLE STARTERS OFF THE BENCH THE HEAD COACH LAST TIME OUT (2/1/03): The Colorado Mines womens basketball team fell to Nebraska-Kearney, 88-68, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action in the Health and Sports Center. The Lopers raced out to a 41-25 lead at the half and never looked back in claiming the win. Mines was led by sophomore guard Katie Gaudutis who scored a team-best 13 points and dished out four assists. Junior center Bara Zahnasova added a career-high 12 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard Heather Hoops chipped in 12 points and two steals. MOANS AND GROANS: Those groans you hear at CSM womens basketball games could be coming from opposing coaches when they realize that freshman center Ashley Gronewoller will have three years of eligibility left after this season. The 6-foot-3 Gronewoller leads the team in in several statistical categories, including scoring (9.8 ppg), rebounding (7.1 rpg), blocked shots (1.3 bpg) and field goal percentage (.556). In a win over Colorado College on Jan. 25, Gronewoller produced a career-high 22 points and 10 boards. She registered her third double-double of the season in Fridays loss at Fort Hays State with 16 points and 10 boards. AN ANGEL ON THE COURT: Gronewollers classmate, forward Heather Angel, has also produced an outstanding freshman campaign. She is second on the team in both scoring (8.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg) and is also second on the team in assists (1.8 apg). Angel has produced four double-doubles this season which ranks sixth in the RMAC. K-MART: Forward Karen Martin, the lone senior on this years squad, has provided the team with experience and leadership this season. A co-captain, Martin is the lone player to start all 19 games for the Orediggers this year and is averaging 2.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per night. HORK OFF THE HOOK: After playing just 39 minutes in eight games all of last season, sophomore guard Kristin Horkey has been a bright spot for Mines this season. A starter in 10-of-17 games, she is fourth on the team in scoring (7.1 ppg) and has led Mines in scoring on four occasions this season. Horkey is also second in the RMAC in three-point field goal percentage (.463) as she has hit on 19-of-41 attempts. HOOP IT UP: Sophomore guard Heather Hoops has provided
the team with solid all-around play from her point guard position this
season. A starter in 17-of-19 games this season, Hoops currently leads
the team with 36 assists and is also averaging 4.7 points and 1.8 rebounds
per game. In a victory over Colorado Christian on Jan. 21, Hoops scored
13 points, just one of her career-high, and also grabbed four rebounds. BIG BAD BARA: Junior center Bara Zahnasova has been on a role recently. Over her last three games, the Czech Republic native has averaged 6.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 0.8 assists per contest, including a career-high 12 points in Saturdays loss at Nebraska-Kearney. FOR STARTERS: Junior guard Jessica Neumiller made her first start of the season in Fridays loss at Fort Hays State and recorded seven points and three steals in 18 minutes. LETS GET 70: The number 70 appears to be the good luck charm for the womens basketball team. Since the 2000-01 season, Mines is 15-1 when it scores at least 70 points, including three victories this season. The last time CSM lost when it scored at least 70 points was on Feb. 21, 2001, a 92-76 setback at Fort Hays State. In three of its four wins this season, CSM has topped the 70-point barrier. SCOUTING THIS WEEKS COMPETITION: Metro State enters play this week at 10-9 overall and in fourth place in the conference at 7-4. Last week, the Roadrunners lost to Regis, 61-56, and knocked off Chadron State, 64-49. Rachel Grove totaled 27 points and 19 rebounds for the two games, including 14 points and 13 boards in the loss to Regis. For the season, Natasha Molock leads her club at 12.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while Malene Lindholm posts 11.7 points per night. For the season, Metro is shooting 42 percent from the floor and 71 percent from the charity stripe. The Roadrunners are averaging 65.3 points per game, while surrendering 64.1 points per contest. |
