THE HEAD COACH
Vic Doperalski is in his tenth season as the women’s basketball coach at Colorado School of Mines, and his 26th year overall as a basketball coach. During his nine years at the helm for the Orediggers, Doperalski has accumulated a 87-160 record, guiding the team to the three winningest seasons in CSM history. Last season, Doperalski led CSM to an overall record of 16-11, including a 10-9 mark in the RMAC. In addition, the Orediggers racked up 11 wins in both the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.

AN ANGEL AMONG US: Freshman forward Heather Angel has been a key component for the Orediggers this season. A starter in all five games, she is second on the team in scoring at 9.2 points per game and is also the leading rebounder for CSM at 8.4 boards per game, which ranks sixth in the conference. She posted two double doubles last week as she tallied career highs in points (14) and rebounds (13) in a 65-59 loss to Grandview last Tuesday and then registered 13 points and 12 boards in Saturday’s 70-49 win over Lynn.

VERY CHARITBALE: Colorado Mines is shooting just 60 percent from the free throw line this season (62-104). However, one could never have told with the way the Orediggers shot from the line in Saturday’s win over Lynn. CSM connected on 25-of-28 attempts from the line, including 23-of-25 in the second half.

REJECTED: The Orediggers are tied for first in the RMAC with 14 blocked shots this season. Junior center Katie Cunio leads her team with four blocks.

A GOLDEN THIEF: People should be aware if CSM sophomore guard Katie Gaudutis is lurking. The Odessa, Mo., native leads the conference with 13 steals this season and averages 2.6 per game. In addition, Gaudutis leads Mines with 10.8 points per game and is also averaging 1.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

TURNOVER WOES: The one place CSM would like to see marked improvement is in the turnover column. Through five games, the Orediggers have turned the ball over 133 times, an average of 26.6 per game.

LET’S GET 70: The number 70 appears to be the good luck charm for the women’s basketball team. Over the last two seasons, Mines is 13-1 when it scores at least 70 points. Saturday’s win over Lynn marked the first time this season that the Orediggers scored at least 70 points. The last time CSM lost when it scored at least 70 points was on Feb. 21, 2001, a 92-76 setback at Fort Hays State.

GETTING READY: Following Saturday’s game against Mesa State, CSM will begin its RMAC schedule. The Orediggers will open conference play next Friday and Saturday with home games against Western State and UC-Colorado Springs.

SCOUTING THIS WEEKS COMPETITION: Mesa State enters the week at 4-0 overall after earning two victories over the weekend. The Mavericks knocked off CU-Colorado Springs, 70-44, and Central Missouri State, 66-56, in its own Thanksgiving Classic over the weekend. For the season, Mesa is led by Natalie Rogers, who is averaging 18.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Eric Packer posts 15.3 points and 5.0 boards per game, while Danielle Porreco averages 7.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Prior to its game with CSM on Saturday, Mesa will play at Northern Colorado on Thursday night.
