COLORADO MINES WOMENS BASKETBALL FALLS
AT DURANGO, Colo. The seventh-seeded Colorado School of Mines womens basketball team saw its season come to a close with a 76-60 loss at second-seeded Fort Lewis Whalen Gymnasium in the opening round of the 2004 Wells Fargo/Rocky Mountain Shootout on Wednesday evening. Mines finishes its season at 12-16 overall (10-9 RMAC),
which is an improvement of eight games from last season. The Skyhawks
advance to play the winner of tonights quarterfinal between third-seeded
Colorado State-Pueblo and sixth-seeded Metro State on Saturday afternoon
at 4:00 pm at the World Arena in Colorado Springs. CSM placed three players in double figures, led by senior guard Jessica Neumiller (Casper, Wyo./Casper) who posted 13 points, including 3-of-3 from three-point range in her final collegiate game. Junior guard Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prarie) and sophomore forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) amassed 10 points apiece. The Skyhawks (22-6, 15-4 RMAC) received double-double efforts from Amy Mohr of 15 points and 10 rebounds and Kellie Becker of 10 points and a game-high 11 boards. Mines shot 51 percent (23-45) from the field and held the Skyhawks to just 41 percent (19-46), but Fort Lewis was 27-of-38 from the free throw line compared to 8-of-12 for the Orediggers. FLC also held a 35-24 advantage on the glass. The Orediggers knocked off Fort Lewis in their regular season meeting, 56-46, back on Jan. 17 in Golden. -- orediggers -- MINES WOMENS BASKETBALL FALLS TO REGIS, 63-36 GOLDEN, Colo. Regis University outscored Colorado School of Mines, 38-18, in the second half to post a 63-36 win on Thursday night in Volk Gymnasium. Regis led by seven at halftime (25-18) and went on to outscore the Orediggers, 19-3 over the first 12 minutes of the second half to take control of the game. CSM sophomore center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa Springs, Colo./Pagosa Springs) scored six points and grabbed a team-best nine boards to lead her squad. Sophomore forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) recorded a team-high eight points, while junior guard Kristin Horkey (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) notched seven markers. The Rangers (18-8, 13-5 RMAC) were paced by Kristina Vengryte who scored a game-high 17 points and registered six steals. Diana Lopez tallied 11 points and five rebounds, while her twin sister, Denise amassed seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Mines will return to action next Wednesday when it participates in the First Round of the RMAC Tournament at a site and time to be determined. orediggers MINES WOMENS BASKETBALL TOPS COLORADO CHRISTIAN, 72-40 GOLDEN, Colo. The Colorado School of Mines womens basketball team erupted for 47 second half points and claimed a 72-40 victory over Colorado Christian in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Tuesday night in Volk Gymnasium. The win improves Mines to 12-14 overall and 10-8 in the RMAC. The 10 confernce wins tie for the most in school history. Mines claimed a 25-16 lead with 51 seconds to play in the first half, but CCU would score the final four points of the half to pull to within five (25-20). But the Orediggers used a 13-2 run over the first five minutes of the second half to assume control of the game. CSM junior guard Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prarie) led a balanced Oredigger attack with a game-high 14 points. Junior guard Heather Hoops (Golden, Colo./Wheat Ridge) amassed 11 points, five assists and four boards, while sophomore center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa Springs, Colo./Pagosa Springs) totaled eight points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots and sophomore forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) added eight points and seven rebounds. The Cougars (1-25, 0-18 RMAC) were led by Monica Chases 12 points./ Jeanee Burton added eight points and a game-best nine rebounds. Mines will conclude its regular season on Thursday night when it hosts Regis beginning at 6:00 pm in Volk Gymnasium. The Rangers handed CSM a 55-46 setback at Regis Fieldhouse back on Jan. 24. -- orediggers -- MINES WOMENS BASKETBALL FALLS TO METRO STATE, 52-48 GOLDEN, Colo. -- Metro States Angelena Kuleff totaled 22 points and 12 rebounds to help lift the Roadrunners to a key 52-48 win over Colorado School of Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference womens basketball action Saturday night in Volk Gymnasium. The win improves Metro State to 11-14 overall and 9-8 in conference play, while Mines falls to 11-14 overall and 9-8 in the RMAC. CSM held a 27-16 lead with 5:28 to play in the first half, but Metro State would outscore Mines, 12-0, over the remainder of the half to take a one point lead (28-27) to the locker room. The second half was much of the same as Mines claimed a 46-39 lead with 6:03 to play, but saw the Roadrunners outscore them, 13-2 over the remainder of the game to earn the win. CSM junior guard Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prarie) led Mines with 12 points and four rebounds. Mines will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Colorado Christian at 6:00 pm in Volk Gymnasium.
MINES WOMENS BASKETBALL TOPS CHADRON STATE, 73-59 GOLDEN, Colo. Colorado School of Mines sophomore center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa Springs, Colo./Pagosa Springs) went 11-of-15 from the field and tied her career high with 26 points as the Orediggers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 73-59 win over Chadron State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference womens basketball action Friday night in Volk Gymnasium. Mines, which led by one point (30-29) at halftime, opened the second half on a 17-4 run to take a 14 point lead (47-33) with 13 minutes to play. The Eagles managed to slice the lead to five points with 10 minutes to play and still had it down to five with 5:47 remaining. However, CSM would score the next eight points, including six by Gronewoller, to seal the game. Gronewoller also added a game-high nine boards, while junior guard Heather Hoops (Golden, Colo./Wheat Ridge) produced 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Chadron (6-17, 6-10 RMAC) was led by Kim Petty who scored 17 points and grabbed seven boards. Dwan Hereford (16) and Lindsay Erwin (12) also reached double figures for the Eagles. Mines received 13 points apiece from sophomore forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatifeld) and junior guard Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prarie), while Angel also grabbed six rebounds. UNK (18-5, 12-3 RMAC) had three players in double figures led by Kalee Modlins 22 points and five rebounds. Taryn Ninemire added 20 markers and Anne Manning posted 11 points. Mines, which trailed 29-25 at the intermission, received 10 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield). Junior forward Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prarie) added 10 points and senior guard Jessica Neumiller (Casper, Wyo./Casper) contributed nine points with three trifectas. UNK (16-3, 10-1 RMAC) raced out to a 23-15 lead with 6:31 to play in the first half, only to see the Orediggers use a 13-4 run to close the first half and take a one point (28-27) lead at the break. Mines (9-10, 7-4 RMAC) opened its largest lead of the game (51-45) on a layup from senior guard Jessica Neumiller (Casper, Wyo./Casper) with 10:34 to play in the game. But UNK used a 9-2 run over the next five minutes of play to regain a 54-53 lead. The Lopers would lead the rest of the way. The Colorado School of Mines womens basketball team used a 34-22 second half to knock off visiting Fort Hays State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Friday night in Volk Gymnasium. It was the Orediggers first win over FHSU since Feb. 1, 2001, a 73-71 win in Golden. Mines claimed a slim two-point lead at halftime (28-26), but used a 10-4 run to open the first five minutes of the second half and gain a 38-30 lead. The Tigers would cut their deficit to four points on two occasions, the last time coming with 10:53 left in the game on a pair of free throws by Shanell Watson to make the score 42-38. From there, Mines would score six straight points to gain a 10 point lead (48-38) with eight minutes remaining. The Tigers would not threaten the rest of the game as Mines knocked down 13-of-16 free throws in the final five minutes. CSM hit 33-of-43 from the charity stripe for the game. Mines was led by senior center Katie Cunio (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) who posted 14 points and four rebounds off the bench. CSM junior guard Kristin Horkey (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) scored game-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Regis (12-5, 7-2 RMAC) raced out to a 10-point lead (18-8) 12 minutes into the contest, but Mines would close the first half on an 11-2 run to close the gap to 20-19 at halftime. CSM (8-9, 6-3 RMAC) gained its first lead of the afternoon as senior forward Bara Zahnasova (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) hit a jumper seven seconds into the second half. Trailing 23-22 at halftime, Mines used a 13-5 run over the first nine minutes to assume a seven point lead (35-28). After FLC took its last lead of the game (44-43) on a layup from Amy Mohr, the Orediggers used a 7-2 run to regain a six point lead and connected on 11-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes to secure the win. CSU-Pueblo (6-6, 2-2 RMAC) claimed a 25-12 lead with 6:53 to play in the first half, but Mines would close the first half on a 15-9 run to close the gap to seven points (34-27) at the intermission. CSM would get as close as five points (48-43) midway through the first half, but the Tunderwolves would score the next six points to reclaim a double digit lead with just under eight minutes to play. The Colorado School of Mines womens basketball team remained perfect in conference play with a 68-50 victory over visiting Mesa State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday night in Volk Gymnasium. The victory improved Mines to 4-6 overall and 3-0 in RMAC play, while the Mavericks fell to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play. CSM raced out to an 11-2 lead after six minutes of action and maitained a 28-19 lead at halftime. Mines extended its lead to double digits (30-19) on a jumper from sophomore forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) less than one minute into the second half and would extend the lead to as many as 18 points. Angel finished with a game-high 16 points and seven boards, while senior guard Jessica Neumiller (Casper, Wyo./Casper) tallied 15 points, including 4-of-8 from three-point land and four steals. On Friday, the Orediggers dropped a 59-45 decision at Wayne State (Neb.) and followed that with a 65-44 setback at fourth-ranked South Dakota on Saturday afternoon. On Friday, the Wildcats (7-4) outscored Mines, 40-28, in the second half to claim the win. Mines senior guard Jessica Neumiller (Casper, Wyo./Casper) led the way with 13 points and three steals. UCCS (2-5, 1-1 RMAC) raced out to a 16-6 lead six minutes into the game, but Mines would rally to slice its deficit to 35-32 at halftime. Westmont connected on 15-of-29 three-pointers to claim a 72-59 victory over the Colorado School of Mines in nonconference womens basketball action Saturday evening at the Colorado Christian Thanksgiving Classic. Westmont (3-2) led 40-27 at the half and would hold on to at least a 10 point lead for the entire second half. CSM (1-4) was led by sophomore center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa Springs, Colo./Pagosa Springs) who tallied a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Holy Names, the eighth ranked team in the latest NAIA poll, outscored Colorado School of Mines, 41-23, in the second half en route to a 73-56 victory in nonconference womens basketball action Friday evening in Volk Gymnasium. The Orediggers (0-2) claimed a 33-32 lead at halftime as sophomore center Ashley Gronewoller (Pagosa Springs, Colo./Pagosa Springs) and sophomore forward Heather Angel (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield) combined for 22 points. However, Holy Names used an 22-9 run to open the second half and claim a 51-41 lead with 12:41 minutes to play. Mines would slice its deficit to 51-46 on a layup by Gronewoller with 10:36 to play, but would get no closer. Gronewoller recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Angel produced 13 points and three boards. CSM committed 31 turnovers.
