HEAD COACH: Paula Krueger is in her third year as the head women’s basketball coach at Colorado School of Mines. Last season, Krueger led CSM to its best season in program history as the team tallied a 19-9 overall record, including 13-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In addition, she guided the squad to the RMAC Tournament for the second straight year where the fifth-seeded Orediggers lost in the opening round to fourth-seeded Fort Hays State. A graduate of Northern State, Krueger was a standout on the basketball court as she earned national tournament MVP honors as a senior during Northern’s national championship campaign in 1993-94. In addition, Krueger was also a team captain and all-district performer on NSU’s softball team. She earned NSU’s prestigious Hildred Wolfe Student Athlete of the Year award as a senior.
Following her successful athletic career, Krueger served as a graduate assistant at Northern State from 1995-96 for women’s basketball and softball while finishing up her studies. She received her bachelor’s in education from Northern in 1995 and her master’s in teaching in 1996. After graduation, Krueger served as the assistant women’s basketball coach and head softball coach at Northern State. During her six year’s as assistant at NSU, she helped lead her squad to a 114-59 mark.

MINES CURRENTLY FIFTH IN RMAC: The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team is fifth in the East Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines is behind Regis who is in first, Fort Hays State second, Metro State third and Nebraska-Kearney who sits in fourth. Chadron State and Colorado Christian round out the division in sixth and seventh.

LAST WEEK (1/20, 1/21): CSM beat Colorado Christian, 60-48, on Tuesday night and fell at Nebraska-Kearney on Friday night, 75-45.

AGAINST COLORADO CHRISTIAN: The Orediggers got a quick jump against the Cougars, going into halftime 14 points up. The second half, Mines backups got a chance to play most of the period, getting great experience and coming up with a 60-48 win. Ashley Gronewoller led the way with her 18 points and 10 rebounds while Julie Marshall (12 pts.) and Iva Tomova (11 pts.) found their way into double figures.

AGAINST NEBRASKA-KEARNEY: Mines went into Kearney Friday night starting off a little slow. After getting themselves into a hole the first half, down 42-13, it was next to impossible to dig themselves out. After outscoring the Lopers 33-32 in the second, the damage had already been done. Iva Tomova led the Orediggers with 14 points and four rebounds while Kesley Crist added 10 points and a team high, five rebounds.

FIRST MEETING WITH CHADRON : Mines came up with a victory just two weeks ago when they faced the Eagles at Volk Gymnasium. This time, Mines will go into the Eagles house and try to do the same thing. Last time Mines was led by Gronewoller’s 22 points, while Chadron State’s Bec Kyba had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead the Eagles.

LAST TIME VS. FORT HAYS: Second in the RMAC, the tigers look to improve their already successful season with a 2-0 sweep against the Orediggers this season. Two weeks ago, Hays came into Volk Gym beating the Orediggers 52-39. After going into half tied 17-17, Mines came out in the second half shooting only 17 percent, and watched their chances of a victory slip away.

SUPER SENIOR ASHLEY GRONEWOLLERr: This season, Gronewoller is averaging 14.1 points and 8.0 rebounds. She was named the RMAC Player of the Week in week 3. Currently, Gronewoller ranks 10th in the RMAC with a 14.1 average for points per game, is fourth in rebounding (8.0), is third with a .552 field goal percentage and is second in blocked shots with a total of 43.

GRONEWOLLER RECORDS: Gronewoller is also closing in on three Colorado School of Mines records. Two weeks ago against Fort Hays, Gronewoller broke the school record for most career rebounds. She now has the record with 791. She also ranks second with career points with 1,313 and second in career field goals made with 525. Here is a showing of who Gronewoller is chasing in these categories.

“ANGEL”A AMONG US: Junior forward Angela Pearson continues to follow her impressive season last year in which she was fourth on the team in scoring (8.4) and third in rebounds (5.8). This season, Pearson currently is second on the team in rebounds, averaging 5.9 per game and is averaging 10.5 points per game, third on the team. Pearson sat out the past three games and her return is still questionable.

OUT OF THIS COUNTRY: Iva Tomova is originally from Varna, Bulgaria and transfered to Mines from Northeastern Junior College, after a successful career at her junior college, Tomova is first on the team with 57 assists in 20 games played, which puts her 15th in the RMAC. She also is second on the team with a 13.0 points per game average, which puts her 13th in the RMAC. She also is ranked sixth in the RMAC with a .836 free throw percentage. Tomova led Mines against Kearney Friday night with her 14 points and four rebounds.

JEFFRIES BREAKS OUT: Sophomore Liz Jeffries broke out against Chadron State. Jeffries ended the night 4-5 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from three. She chipped in 14 points and two rebounds in Mines’ 67-54 win over the Eagles. Jeffries currently ranks fifth on the team with 5.2 points per game and is third in assists with 49.

BE LIKE EICK: After sitting out last season due to injury, Sara Eickelman will be Mines’ starting point guard this season. She currently is second on the team with 56 assists, which puts her 18th in the RMAC. Eickelman has been playing on a repaired ACL knee and a bum ankle for the past two weeks, but nothing will slow her down, as she continues to play with tons of heart each and every game.

CRISP BEGINNING: Freshman Kelsey Crist has started her collegiate career off on a high note. Averaging 6.3 ppg and 5.1 rebounds, Crist has proven to be a big addition to the Orediggers team this season, becoming one of the starters. Crist currently ranks fourth on the team in scoring (6.3) and third in rebounds (5.1). This past weekend, Crist had a team high five rebounds against Kearney and added 11 points on top of that.

MINES PLAGUED BY INJURIES: Mines has struggled these past couple of weeks, after getting bit by the injury bug. This past weekend at Kearney, Mines had three players go down in Sara Eicklman, freshman Julie Marshall and junior Shannon Griep.

LET’S GET 60: The number 60 appears to be the good luck charm for the women’s basketball team. In the past three seasons, Mines is 25-3 when it scores at least 60 points. This season, Mines is 9-2 when they score at least 60.

HOME SWEET HOME: Mines is close to unbeatable at home this season, with a 7-2 home record. They will return home on February 18th with a 6:00 pm rematch against Nebraska-Kearney.
