HEAD COACH: Paula Krueger is in her third year as the head women’s basketball coach at Colorado School of Mines. Last season, Krueger led CSM to its best season in program history as the team tallied a 19-9 overall record, including 13-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In addition, she guided the squad to the RMAC Tournament for the second straight year where the fifth-seeded Orediggers lost in the opening round to fourth-seeded Fort Hays State. A graduate of Northern State, Krueger was a standout on the basketball court as she earned national tournament MVP honors as a senior during Northern’s national championship campaign in 1993-94. In addition, Krueger was also a team captain and all-district performer on NSU’s softball team. She earned NSU’s prestigious Hildred Wolfe Student Athlete of the Year award as a senior.
Following her successful athletic career, Krueger served as a graduate assistant at Northern State from 1995-96 for women’s basketball and softball while finishing up her studies. She received her bachelor’s in education from Northern in 1995 and her master’s in teaching in 1996. After graduation, Krueger served as the assistant women’s basketball coach and head softball coach at Northern State. During her six year’s as assistant at NSU, she helped lead her squad to a 114-59 mark.

MINES CURRENTLY FIFTH IN RMAC: The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team is fifth in the East Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines is behind Regis who is in first, Fort Hays State second, Nebraska-Kearney third and Metro State who sits in fourth. Chadron State and Colorado Christian round out the division in sixth and seventh.

LAST WEEK (1/20, 1/21): CSM beat Chadron State Thursday night 54-49 and lost to Fort Hays State on Saturday 66-57..

AGAINST CHADRON STATE: This was the second time Mines faced Chadron, after winning last time at home, the Orediggers went on the road and were able to beat the Eagles for the second time this season. With 13 points and 14 rebounds, Ashley Gronewoller led her team to a 54-49 victory. Anglea Pearson and Iva Tomova also finished in double figures, Pearson with 15 points and Tomova with 12 along with eight rebounds. Mines went into halftime trailing 30-27 but came out firing in the second, outscoring the Eagles 27-17 giving the Orediggers the 54-49 win.

AGAINST FORT HAYS: Mines was looking for an upset Saturday night in hopes of beating the number two in the conference tigers. Chances of this happening looked good as the Orediggers went into the half with a 28-26 lead.
But a 26 percent shooting average in the second, shut down the Mines’ hopes as the Tigers were able to out score the Orediggers 40-29, giving them a 66-57 victory, improving their RMAC record to 13-2.

THIS WEEK AT CHRISTIAN : Mines goes on the road Tuesday night with a game against the Colorado Christian Cougars. Mines defeated the Cougars two weeks ago at home 60-48. A win is what Mines needs to keep them in the running to make the RMAC tournament at the beginning of March. Last time against Christian, Gronewoller led her team with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Leading the way for the Cougars was Sara Davis who ended with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Monica Chase added 17 points.

OUTLOOK ON NEBRASKA-KEARNEY: Kearney comes into Volk Gymnasium Saturday night riding on cloud nine. Kearney came away with probably one of the biggest upsets of the season in the RMAC this past weekend, by beating the undefeated in the League Regis Rangers. They didn’t only beat the Rangers, but they did it in away which made the Lopers look like they belonged in the number one spot, defeating them 83-66. The night after, Kearney came up big again with a 104-72 win against Metro State who was currently ranked third in the East Division. With the win Kearney over took the third place position while Metro dropped to fourth. Mines will look to shut down the Lopers Saturday night in front of their home crowd. Kearney beat the Orediggers a couple weeks ago 75-45.

SUPER SENIOR ASHLEY GRONEWOLLER: This season, Gronewoller is averaging 13.9 points and 8.2 rebounds. She was named the RMAC Player of the Week in week 3. Currently, Gronewoller ranks 11th in the RMAC with a 13.9 average for points per game, is second in rebounding (8.2), is third with a .550 field goal percentage and is second in blocked shots with a total of 46.

GRONEWOLLER RECORDS: Gronewoller is also closing in on three Colorado School of Mines records. A couple of weeks ago against Fort Hays, Gronewoller broke the school record for most career rebounds. She now has the record with 812. She also ranks second with career points with 1,335 and second in career field goals made with 535. Here is a showing of who Gronewoller is chasing in these categories. Only trailing by 14 points in career points, Gronewoller is most likely to also see herself on top of this record by the end of this weeks games.

“ANGEL”A AMONG US: Junior forward Angela Pearson continues to follow her impressive season last year in which she was fourth on the team in scoring (8.4) and third in rebounds (5.8). This season, Pearson currently is second on the team in rebounds, averaging 5.8 per game and is averaging 10.5 points per game, third on the team. Pearson returned to action this past weekend after sitting out three games due to a concussion. Pearson showed why she is a crucial asset to this team as she came out in her first game back against Chadron to score 15 points.

OUT OF THIS COUNTRY: Iva Tomova is originally from Varna, Bulgaria and transfered to Mines from Northeastern Junior College, after a successful career at her junior college, Tomova is first on the team with 63 assists in 22 games played, which puts her 15th in the RMAC. She also is second on the team with a 13.1 points per game average, which puts her 14th in the RMAC. She also is ranked fourth in the RMAC with a .855 free throw percentage. Tomova led Mines against Fort Hays Saturday night with her 17 points, whe also had 12 points and eight rebounds the night before against Chadron.

BE LIKE EICK: After sitting out last season due to injury, Sara Eickelman will be Mines’ starting point guard this season. She currently is second on the team with 58 assists, which puts her in the top 20 in the RMAC. Eickelman has been playing on a repaired ACL knee and a bum ankle for the past two weeks, but nothing will slow her down, as she continues to play with tons of heart each and every game.

CRISP BEGINNING: Freshman Kelsey Crist has started her collegiate career off on a high note. Averaging 6.6 ppg and 5.0 rebounds, Crist has proven to be a big addition to the Orediggers team this season, becoming one of the starters. Crist currently ranks fourth on the team in scoring (6.6) and third in rebounds (5.0). This past weekend, Crist ended with nine points in both games and added a total of 11 rebounds for the weekend.

LET’S GET 60: The number 60 appears to be the good luck charm for the women’s basketball team. In the past three seasons, Mines is 25-3 when it scores at least 60 points. This season, Mines is 9-2 when they score at least 60.

HOME SWEET HOME: Mines is close to unbeatable at home this season, with a 7-2 home record. They return home this Saturday, February 18th with a 6:00 pm rematch against Nebraska-Kearney.
