HEAD COACH: Paula Krueger is in her third year as the head women’s basketball coach at Colorado School of Mines. Last season, Krueger led CSM to its best season in program history as the team tallied a 19-9 overall record, including 13-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In addition, she guided the squad to the RMAC Tournament for the second straight year where the fifth-seeded Orediggers lost in the opening round to fourth-seeded Fort Hays State. A graduate of Northern State, Krueger was a standout on the basketball court as she earned national tournament MVP honors as a senior during Northern’s national championship campaign in 1993-94. In addition, Krueger was also a team captain and all-district performer on NSU’s softball team. She earned NSU’s prestigious Hildred Wolfe Student Athlete of the Year award as a senior.
Following her successful athletic career, Krueger served as a graduate assistant at Northern State from 1995-96 for women’s basketball and softball while finishing up her studies. She received her bachelor’s in education from Northern in 1995 and her master’s in teaching in 1996. After graduation, Krueger served as the assistant women’s basketball coach and head softball coach at Northern State. During her six year’s as assistant at NSU, she helped lead her squad to a 114-59 mark.

MINES CURRENTLY FIFTH IN RMAC: The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team is fifth in the East Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines is behind Regis who is in first, Nebraska-Kearney second, Fort Hays State third and Metro State who sits in fourth. Chadron State and Colorado Christian round out the division in sixth and seventh.

LAST WEEK (1/20, 1/21): CSM beat Colorado Christian Tuesday night 51-39 and lost a hearbreaker to Nebraska-Kearny 59-53.

AGAINST COLORADO CHRISTIAN: This was the second time Mines faced Christian, after winning last time at home, the Orediggers went on the road and were able to beat the Cougars for the second time this season. With 12 points and 13 rebounds, Ashley Gronewoller led her team to a 51-39 victory. Anglea Pearson and Liz Jeffries also finished in double figures, Pearson with 10 points and Jeffries with 11. Mines went into halftime trailing 30-27 but came out firing in the second, outscoring the Eagles 27-17 giving the Orediggers the 54-49 win.

AGAINST NEBRASKA-KEARNEY: Kearny is now second in the East Division and a win over the Orediggers helped their record even more. Mines went into half time with a 27-25 lead and kept the game close the entire way through. Poor calls and crucial mistakes late in the second half gave Kearney the 59-53 victory. Mines fell to 8-9 in the Conference and are still in the hunt to make the RMAC tournament at the end of the season. Gronewoller led the team with 17 points and 12 rebounds while Pearson added 13 points and Iva Tomova chipped in 11.

THIS WEEK AGAINST REGIS : Regis is the number one team in the conference. It leads the East Division with a 24-4 overall record and a 16-1 conference record. They currently are receiving votes for the top 25 in Division II, last week their votes put them at number 26 in the nation. This weekend, Mines needs a win to secure them a spot in the RMAC tournament beginning in March. Last time the two teams faced each other Regis came away with a 73-59 win. However, Mines has home court advantage and is playing with alot on the line, makings for a very interesting game.

OUTLOOK ON METRO: Metro has lost three of their last six games, making a very vulnerable and beatable team when they make their way into Volk Gymnasium Saturday night. A win over Metro would be great for Mines’ confidence and for their RMAC tournament chances. One month ago, Metro handed Mines a 88-36 lost. This time the tables have turned as Mines gets to face the Roadrunners at their home court, where they have only lost three games the entire season.

SUPER SENIOR ASHLEY GRONEWOLLER: This season, Gronewoller is averaging 13.9 points and 8.6 rebounds. She was named the RMAC Player of the Week in week 3. Currently, Gronewoller ranks 11th in the RMAC with a 13.9 average for points per game, is second in rebounding (8.6), is third with a .546 field goal percentage and is second in blocked shots with a total of 46.

GRONEWOLLER RECORDS: Gronewoller also has found her self on top of two Colorado School of Mines records. A couple of weeks ago against Fort Hays, Gronewoller broke the school record for most career rebounds. She now has the record with 837. She also broke the record this past weekend against Nebraska-Kearney for most career points. She now has the record with 1,364. She also ranks second in career field goals made with 549. Here is a showing of who Gronewoller is chasing and has passed in these categories.

“ANGEL”A AMONG US: Junior forward Angela Pearson continues to follow her impressive season last year in which she was fourth on the team in scoring (8.4) and third in rebounds (5.8). This season, Pearson currently is second on the team in rebounds, averaging 5.7 per game and is averaging 10.6 points per game, third on the team. Pearson was second on the team this past weekend against Kearney with 13 points and seven rebounds, she also had 10 points and five rebounds against Colorado Christian on Tuesday.

OUT OF THIS COUNTRY: Iva Tomova is originally from Varna, Bulgaria and transfered to Mines from Northeastern Junior College, after a successful career at her junior college, Tomova is first on the team with 70 assists in 24 games played, which puts her 14th in the RMAC. She also is second on the team with a 12.7 points per game average, which puts her 17th in the RMAC. She also is ranked third in the RMAC with a .857 free throw percentage. Tomova ended this weekend with 11 points against Nebraska-Kearney, second on the team.

BE LIKE EICK: After sitting out last season due to injury, Sara Eickelman is Mines’ starting point guard this season. She currently is second on the team with 61 assists, which puts her in the top 20 in the RMAC. Eickelman has been playing on a repaired ACL knee and a bum ankle for the past three weeks, but nothing will slow her down, as she continues to play with tons of heart each and every game. This past weekend she managed to play 39 minutes against Kearney, resting only one minute out of the entire game.

CRISP BEGINNING: Freshman Kelsey Crist has started her collegiate career off on a high note. Averaging 6.4 ppg and 4.9 rebounds, Crist has proven to be a big addition to the Orediggers team this season, becoming one of the starters. Crist currently ranks fourth on the team in scoring (6.4) and third in rebounds (4.9).

LET’S GET 60: The number 60 appears to be the good luck charm for the women’s basketball team. In the past three seasons, Mines is 25-3 when it scores at least 60 points. This season, Mines is 9-2 when they score at least 60.

HOME SWEET HOME: Mines is close to unbeatable at home this season, with a 7-3 home record. They return home this Friday and Saturday with the last games of the season against Regis and Metro.

CSM NEEDS WIN TO CONTINUE: A win in the next and last two games of the season is a must for the Orediggers. Fighting for the eighth and final spot for the playoffs, a win would secure their post season play. Even with two losses, Mines still has a chance, depending on how teams in the West Division do. Right now Mines is tied with an 8-9 record with CU springs while New Mexico Highlands and Western State are just one game behind, with a 7-10 record. CSU-Pueblo also is just one game ahead with a 9-8 record. Only eight teams advanced to the post season. Meaning, two of these five will not make it.
