HEAD COACH: Paula Krueger is in her third year as the head women’s basketball coach at Colorado School of Mines. Last season, Krueger led CSM to its best season in program history as the team tallied a 19-9 overall record, including 13-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In addition, she guided the squad to the RMAC Tournament for the second straight year where the fifth-seeded Orediggers lost in the opening round to fourth-seeded Fort Hays State. A graduate of Northern State, Krueger was a standout on the basketball court as she earned national tournament MVP honors as a senior during Northern’s national championship campaign in 1993-94. In addition, Krueger was also a team captain and all-district performer on NSU’s softball team. She earned NSU’s prestigious Hildred Wolfe Student Athlete of the Year award as a senior.
Following her successful athletic career, Krueger served as a graduate assistant at Northern State from 1995-96 for women’s basketball and softball while finishing up her studies. She received her bachelor’s in education from Northern in 1995 and her master’s in teaching in 1996. After graduation, Krueger served as the assistant women’s basketball coach and head softball coach at Northern State. During her six year’s as assistant at NSU, she helped lead her squad to a 114-59 mark.

MINES CURRENTLY FIFTH IN RMAC: The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team is fifth in the East Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines is behind Fort Hays who is in first, Metro State second, Regis third and Nebraska-Kearney who sits in fourth. Colorado Christian and Chadron State round out the division in sixth and seventh.

LAST WEEK (1/12, 1/14): The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team came away last week with two wins. Thursday night the Orediggers played non conference foes Colorado College beating them 72-57. Saturday they returned to Conference play outlasting CSU-Pueblo in overtime winning 54-53.

AGAINST COLORADO COLLEGE: The Orediggers were able to control the game Thursday against Division III Colorado College. Mines went into halftime up by ten and continued dominating in the second half outscoring The Tigers 39-34 giving them a 72-57 vicotory. Anglea Pearson led the way for Mines for the third straight game ending with 13 points and five rebounds. Iva Tomova added 11 points while Kelsey Crist led the team with nine rebounds.

AGAINST CSU-PUEBLO: In what was one of the most exciting games of the season, the Orediggers were able to hold on to a 54-53 overtime win against the Thunderwolves from Pueblo. After leading 23-14 after the first half, the Thunderwolves put on a second half comeback sending the game into overtime. Mines was able to outscore CSU 6-5 in overtime giving them a one point victory, improving their conference record to 4-3. Mines was led by Ashley Gronewollers 17 points and season high 17 rebounds while Pearson chipped in 11 points.

LAST TIME vs. METRO STATE: Last season Mines lost the first match up against Metro but bounced back with a win the second time they played later in the season. After going into halftime tied 32-32 Mines was able to outlast the Roadrunners beating them with final score 65-64. Gronewoller ended the game with 16 points and six rebounds. Metro returns three of their five starters, Paige Powers who had 10 points last year against Mines and Stephenie Davis who had 11 points and eight rebounds. Also returning was last weeks player of the week, Rianna Harris.

LAST TIME VS.REGIS: Mines lost to Regis, 62-50 last season in their first matchup but came away with a 53-45 win the second time around. Diana Lopez returns for the Rangers and leads her team this year, averaging 21.7 points per game . They also return two more starters. Gronewoller led Mines last year with 19 points and had four rebounds while Angela Pearson returns after she ended with 8 points.

SUPER SENIOR: CSM senior center Ashley Gronewoller continues to build upon her already successful career at Mines. Last year, Gronewoller made her second straight appearance on the First Team East Division and third straight appearance on the All-RMAC East Division Team. She finished the season averaging a team-best 12.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. She also led the team with 45 blocked shots, while shooting 58 percent (144-247) from the field. Gronewoller was also selected to the pre season All RMAC and All RMAC East Division Teams for the 2005-06 season.

GRONEWOLLER THIS SEASON: This season, Gronewoller is averaging 14.6 points and 8.7 rebounds. She was named the RMAC Player of the Week in week 3. Currently, Gronewoller ranks eighth in the RMAC with a 14.6 average for points per game, is first in rebounding (8.7) is third with a .564 field goal percentage and is second in blocked shots with a total of 31.

GRONEWOLLER RECORDS: Gronewoller is also closing in on three Colorado School of Mines records. She currently ranks second with career points with 1,235, second in career rebounds with 753 and second in career field goals made with 494. “ANGEL”A AMONG US: Junior forward Angela Pearson continues to follow her impressive season last year in which she was fourth on the team in scoring (8.4) and third in rebounds (5.8). This season, Pearson currently is second on the team in rebounds, averaging 5.9 per game and is averaging 10.5 points per game, third on the team. Pearson has came on strong in Mines’ last four games scoring in double figures in each game and helping lead her team to three wins out of those four games.

OUT OF THIS COUNTRY: Iva Tomova is originally from Varna, Bulgaria and transfered to Mines from Northeastern Junior College, after a successful career at her junior college, Tomova leads her team with 43 assists in 14 games played. She also is second on the team with a 14.5 points per game average, which puts her 10th in the RMAC. She also is ranked seventh in the RMAC with a .851 free throw percentage. After sitting out against Colorado Springs due to an ankle injury, Tomova scored 11 points and had six rebounds in her first game back against Colorado College on Thursday and led her team with a career high nine assists on Saturday against CSU.

BE LIKE EICK: After sitting out last season due to injury, Sara Eickelman will be Mines’ starting point guard this season. She is second on the team with 43 assists, which puts her 13th in the RMAC. Eickelman had a big game on Saturday as she hit two three’s in a row to keep her team in the game against CSU sending it into overtime.

CRISP BEGINNING: Freshman Kelsey Crist has started her collegiate career off on a high note. Averaging 7.0 ppg and 4.9 rebounds, Crist has proven to be a big addition to the Orediggers team this season, becoming one of the starters. Crist led her team this past weekend with nine rebounds against Colorado College. She currently ranks fourth on the team in scoring (7.0) and third in rebounds (4.9).

LET’S GET 60: The number 60 appears to be the good luck charm for the women’s basketball team. In the past three seasons, Mines is 25-3 when it scores at least 60 points. This season, Mines is 7-2 when they score at least 60.

HOME SWEET HOME: Mines is close to unbeatable at home this season, with a 7-1 home record. Mines continued this streak with their overtime win Saturday agaisnt CSU-Pueblo. They will not return home again until January 27th and 28th.
