COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES Colorado School of Mines vs. Fort Hays State Colorado School of Mines vs. Chadron State CLICK HERE FOR A COMPLETE PDF VERSION OF THE NOTES HEAD COACH: Paula Krueger is in her third year as the
head womens basketball coach at Colorado School of Mines. Last
season, Krueger led CSM to its best season in program history as the
team tallied a 19-9 overall record, including 13-6 in the Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference. In addition, she guided the squad to the RMAC
Tournament for the second straight year where the fifth-seeded Orediggers
lost in the opening round to fourth-seeded Fort Hays State. A graduate
of Northern State, Krueger was a standout on the basketball court
as she earned national tournament MVP honors as a senior during Northerns
national championship campaign in 1993-94. In addition, Krueger was
also a team captain and all-district performer on NSUs softball
team. She earned NSUs prestigious Hildred Wolfe Student Athlete
of the Year award as a senior. MINES CURRENTLY FIFTH IN RMAC: The Colorado School of Mines womens basketball team is fifth in the East Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines is behind Fort Hays who is in first, Metro State second, Regis third and Nebraska-Kearney who sits in fourth. Colorado Christian and Chadron State round out the division in sixth and seventh. LAST WEEK (1/20, 1/21): The Colorado School of Mines womens basketball team struggled this past weekend, dropping two road games. Mines fell to Metro State 88-36 and Regis University 73-59, who are both undefeated in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Confence. AGAINST METRO: The Orediggers 55.6% from the field Friday night against the Roadrunner. But with 42 turnovers, Mines never gave themselves a chance at winning the game. Mines two top scorers. Ashley Gronewoller and Iva Tomova were held to eight points a piece and noone else could seem to step up as Metros defense proved to be too much. Metro was led by four players who ended with double figures, as Megan Johnson had 19 and Stacey Cox with 21. AGAINST REGIS: Mines was able to pressure Regis more than they pressured Metro, but for the second night in a row turnovers killed any momentum they would get. Mines ended with 30 turnovers on the night. Angela Pearson led Mines with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Tomova chipped in 12 points and Gronewoller 10. Regis was led by RMAC points leader, Diana Lopez who had 28 points on the night. REVENGE ON FORT HAYS: Last season Mines split the regular season games 1-1 with Hays, but were beaten by the Tigers in the RMAC Tournament Quarterfinals 81-53, ending the Orediggers season. Revenge is what is on CSMs minds as the Tigers come into the Orediggers house this Friday night. Fort Hays is third in the East Divsion with an 8-1 record so a win would be a huge upset and motivator for the women Orediggers. Junior forward Ashlee Gustin leads Hays, averaging 16.0 points per game and 7.8 rebounds. The Tigers come into Volk Gymnasium after a tough loss to the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers, while Mines is looking for a win after a two game losing spell last weekend. CHADRON STATE this season: After a slow start to the season, Chadron comes into Golden with a 2-15 record and trailing the East Division with a 1-8 RMAC record. The Eagles are led by Bec Kyba who is averaging 14.2 points per game and 5.1 rebounds. Last season, Mines won both of the regular season games against the Eagles, and look to continue the streak this Saturday. SUPER SENIOR: CSM senior center Ashley Gronewoller continues to build upon her already successful career at Mines. Last year, Gronewoller made her second straight appearance on the First Team East Division and third straight appearance on the All-RMAC East Division Team. She finished the season averaging a team-best 12.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. She also led the team with 45 blocked shots, while shooting 58 percent (144-247) from the field. Gronewoller was also selected to the pre season All RMAC and All RMAC East Division Teams for the 2005-06 season. GRONEWOLLER THIS SEASON: This season, Gronewoller is averaging 14.2 points and 8.6 rebounds. She was named the RMAC Player of the Week in week 3. Currently, Gronewoller ranks 12th in the RMAC with a 13.9 average for points per game, is first in rebounding (8.4) is third with a .568 field goal percentage and is second in blocked shots with a total of 34. GRONEWOLLER RECORDS: Gronewoller is also closing in on three Colorado School of Mines records. She currently ranks second with career points with 1,253, second in career rebounds with 765 and second in career field goals made with 502. Here is a showing of who Gronewoller is chasing in these categories. Points Rebounds OUT OF THIS COUNTRY: Iva Tomova is originally from Varna, Bulgaria and transfered to Mines from Northeastern Junior College, after a successful career at her junior college, Tomova is second on the team with 47 assists in 16 games played. She also is second on the team with a 13.9 points per game average, which puts her 13th in the RMAC. She also is ranked sixth in the RMAC with a .849 free throw percentage. Tomova scored eight points this past weekend against Metro while ending with 12 points which was second for the team against Regis. BE LIKE EICK: After sitting out last season due to injury, Sara Eickelman will be Mines starting point guard this season. She currently leads the team with 50 assists, which puts her 13th in the RMAC. Eickelman led Mines with seven assists on Saturday against Regis while adding five points and two steals. CRISP BEGINNING: Freshman Kelsey Crist has started her collegiate career off on a high note. Averaging 6.4 ppg and 5.3 rebounds, Crist has proven to be a big addition to the Orediggers team this season, becoming one of the starters. Crist led her team this past weekend with 11 rebounds against Metro State. She currently ranks fourth on the team in scoring (6.4) and third in rebounds (5.3). LETS GET 60: The number 60 appears to be the good luck charm for the womens basketball team. In the past three seasons, Mines is 25-3 when it scores at least 60 points. This season, Mines is 7-2 when they score at least 60. HOME SWEET HOME: Mines is close to unbeatable at home this season, with a 7-1 home record. Mines continued this streak with their overtime win against CSU-Pueblo at the last home game. Mines returns to Volk Gym this weekend with two home games.
