CSM WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY CLAIMS 14th AT NATIONALS

COMPLETE RESULTS

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Colorado School of Mines women’s cross country team placed 14th out of 24 teams at the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championships contested Saturday afternoon at SAS Soccer Park. It marked the first appearance for the cross country team at nationals and the best finish ever in program history. The Orediggers, ranked 16th in the latest NCAA Division II Poll, totaled 344 points.

Sophomore Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) led the way as she placed 22nd with a time of 22:19 to earn All-American honors. Sophomore Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) was 56th with a time of 23:10, while senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) recorded an 97th place finish in a time of 23:50.

Junior Nicole Shanks (Evergreen, Colo./Faith Christian) and sophomore Loren Large (Thornton, Colo./Skyview) rounded out the top-five finishers for Mines. Shanks was 115th (24:08), while Large completed the course in a time of 24:25 to finish 134th.

Adams State claimed the team title with 38 points, while Chelsea Smith of BYU-Hawaii was the individual champion with a time of 20:33.

The meet completes the season for Mines.

MINES CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES AT REGIONALS AS WOMEN
PLACE FIFTH TO EARN SPOT AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

WAYNE, Neb. - The Colorado School of Mines cross county teams competed at the NCAA II Regional Championships on Saturday morning. The women’s team placed fifth of 26 teams to earn a spot at the NCAA II National Championships to be contested on Nov. 22 Raleigh, N.C. Meanwhile, the men’s team placed ninth of 20 teams as it saw its season come to an end.

The trip to nationals will be the first in the history of the women’s cross country program. Leading the way was sophomore Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) who claimed 13th place with a time of 21:54. Sophomore Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) placed 21st (22:19), while senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) notched 35th place (22:59).

The women’s team entered the week ranked eighth in the region and beat out sixth place CU-Colorado Springs by four points for the final spot at nationals in the North Central Region.

The men’s team was led by freshman Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) who placed 36th in a time of 32:34, while classmate Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) placed 55th (32:58).

The women’s team will have a week off before returning to action at the NCAA II National Championships on Nov. 22.

MINES CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES AT RMAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday morning at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Adams State. The men placed fourth of nine teams, while the women claimed fourth of 11 teams.

The fourth place showing by the men's team was its best finish ever at the conference championships, while the women's fourth place showing matched their best ever finish from 2002.

For the women, sophomore Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) placed 12th in a time of 21:42 and just missed earning All-RMAC honors as the top 10 finishers claimed the honor. Sophomore Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) nothced a 14th place showing in 21:49, while freshman Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) placed 22nd (22:35).

On the men’s side, freshman Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) recorded a time of 25:25 to place 24th, while classmate Clifton Oertli (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) had a 27th place showing (25:39).

Adams State claimed both the men’s and women’s team titles.

The Orediggers will return to action on Nov. 8 when they compete at the NCAA II Regional Championships in Hays, Kan.

CSM CROSS COUNTRY RUNS AT COLORADO

BOULDER, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday morning at the University of Colorado Rocky Mountain Shootout. The women placed fourth of nine teams with 120 points, while the men claimed fifth of nine teams with 145 points.

For the CSM women, sophomore Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) tallied 20th place finish in 22:27, while sophomore Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) was 22nd (22:39). Senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) recorded a 39th place finish in a time of 24:00.

Leading the way for the CSM men was freshman Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) who claimed 35th place finish with a time of 27:32, while senior Derek Hudson (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) placed 47th (27:56).

Both teams are slated to return to action on Nov. 1 when they compete at the RMAC Championships in Alamosa, Colo.

MINES CROSS COUNTRY RUNS AT NEBRASKA

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday morning at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneers Park. The men’s squad place sixth of 30 teams with 197 points, while the women’s team also claimed sixth place out of 27 teams with 169 points.

Leading the way for the CSM men was freshman Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) who claimed 17th place in a time of 26:19. Senior Derek Hudson (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) took home 30th place in 26:45, while freshman Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) registered a 45th place showing (27:05).

For the CSM women, sophomore Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) tallied a third place finish with a time of 22:14, while sophomore Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) was 12th (23:06). Senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) recorded a 42nd place finish with a time of 24:03.

Both teams will be back in action on Oct. 4 when they run at the University of Colorado.

CSM CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES AT ADAMS STATE

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Colorado Mines men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday morning at the Joe L. Vigil Open hosted by Adams State at Cattails Golf Course. The men placed third of five teams with 88 points, while the women were third of six teams with 78 points.

The Adams State men and women each claimed team titles with 15 points each.

Leading the way for the CSM men was senior Derek Hudson (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) who took 25th place in 26:19. Freshman Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) placed 26th in 26:22, while freshman Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) was right behind in 27th place with a time of 26:28.

For the CSM women, sophomore Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) registered a ninth place finish in a time of 18:56, while sophomore Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) was 14th (19:20).

Both teams will be back in action on Sept. 20 when they run at the University of Nebraska.
