CSM FOOTBALL FALLS IN SECOND ROUND OF PLAYOFFS
TO TOP-RANKED PITTSBURG STATE, 70-35

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Colorado School of Mines senior quarterback and Harlon Hill Finalist Chad Friehauf capped the best single season by a Division II signal caller on Saturday afternoon as the Orediggers season was ended by top-ranked Pittsburg State, 70-35, in the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs at Bradernburg Field at Carnie Smith Stadium.

Friehauf finished the second round game by completing an NCAA Division II Playoff record 45 passes in 53 attempts for 433 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions and also ran 13 times for 52 yards and two more scores. In two playoff games, Friehauf accounted for 1,044 total yards, including 900 through the air.

The 6-foot-7 Friehauf concluded the 2004 season 384-of-516 (74.4%) for a Division II single season record 4,646 yards, 39 touchdowns and also ran 144 times for 717 yards and 15 scores. His 5,363 yards of total offense also set a Division II single season record by more than 1,000 yards.

Pitt State (12-0) scored on the opening drive of the game, but the Orediggers responded on their opening possession as Friehauf hit sophomore running back Bryan Florendo (Crete, Neb./Crete) for a 1-yard touchdown pass on fourth down.

However, the Gorillas would go on to score the next 35 points in claiming the win.

CSM (12-1) senior Jonny Chan (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview) had an outstanding game in his last game at Mines as he hauled in 13 balls for 182 yards and a score, while junior wideout Justin Gallas (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn) caught seven passes for 101 yards.

Senior strong safety Daniel Leger (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian) tied for game-high honors with 13 tackles and finished the season with a school-record 124 stops.

Gorilla quarterback Neal Philpot threw for 105 yards and a score and also ran for 143 yards and another touchdown, while Germaine Race ran 19 times for 154 yards and three touchdowns.

Pitt State advances to the Southwest Regional Final where it will face Northwest Missouri State, a 34-14 winner over Texas A&M Kingsville in Saturday's other regional semifinal.
