MINES FOOTBALL TOPS WASHBURN IN SEASON OPENER, 34-27
Friehauf Throws For Three Scores, Runs in Two More

TOPEKA, Kan. - Colorado School of Mines senior quarterback Chad Friehauf (Brush, Colo./Brush) threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more scores as he accounted for all five Oredigger touchdowns to lead his squad to a 34-27 victory at Washburn's Moore Field at Yager Bowl on Saturday afternoon in the nonconference season opener for both squads.

Friehauf finished the game 31-of-42 for 267 yards and three touchdowns and also ran eight times for 29 yards and a pair of scores. It was the second straight season opener in which Friehauf threw for three touchdowns.

Washburn (0-1) opened the scoring at the 10:42 mark of the first stanza on a 38 yard scoring strike from Tyler Schuerman to Sam Sissom. It was the first of three scores for the duo in the game.

CSM (1-0) responded on the ensuing drive as Friehauf found paydirt from two yards out. Following a 4 yard run from Trent Hearn to give the Ichabods a 13-6 advantage, the Orediggers used a Friehauf scoring run and two touchdown passes from the quarterback to gain a 27-13 lead with 8:55 left in the second quarter.

One touchdown pass went to junior wide receiver Justin Gallas (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn), while the other went to sophomore wide receiver Ryan Hollinshead (Loveland, Colo./Loveland). For Hollinshead, it was the first touchdown of his career.

A 13 yard scoring run from Ra'Shaw Moseley with 3:10 left in the first half cut the Oredigger lead to seven points (27-20) at the half.

After neither team scored in the third, Washburn tied the game (27-27) on a 64 yard pass from Schuerman to Sissom. However, Friehauf found senior wide receiver Jonny Chan in the end zone from 10 yards out with 4:55 left in the game and that score proved to be the difference.

Gallas finished with 11 catches for 110 yards and a score, while sophomore free safety Tim Miller (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) led the defense with 11 tackles, one forced fumble, a fumble recovery, two interceptions and a pass breakup.

Schuerman went 14-of-23 for 178 yards and two scores, while Sissom caught three balls, all touchdowns, for 113 yards. Moseley carried the ball 19 times for 109 yards and Grant Gould produced a game-best 15 tackles and also notched an interception for Washburn.

CSM will return to action on Saturday when it faces Missouri Rolla at 1:00 pm at Brooks Field in the Second "Mineral Rights Bowl".
