ASSISTANT FOOTBALL COACH MAT STEINBERG
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/DEFENSIVE BACKS

Mat Steinberg is beginning his fourth season as an assistant coach at Mines. Steinberg, who serves as the defensive coordinator and leads the defensive backs, came to Golden from Truman State where he served as an assistant coach for eight seasons.

During his time in Golden, Steinberg has helped the defense improve each season and was instumental in helping cornerback Grant Newton earn First Team All-RMAC and Second Team All-Region accolades in 2002 after he led the RMAC with eight interceptions. Cornerback Nick Gilbreath was a First Team All-RMAC and Second Team All-Region pick in 2003.

Last season, free safety Tim Miller earned First Team All-RMAC accolades in his first season as a starter.

In addition, Steinberg’s defense ranked 28th in Division II in turnover margin (0.7 tpg) and 52nd in scoring defense (23.2 ppg).

From 1999-2001, Steinberg was the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Truman State. Prior to his eight-year stint at Truman State, Steinberg served a two-year graduate assistantship at North Dakota State University where he coached the safeties. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1992 and his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1995 from North Dakota State University.

As a player, he was a four-year letterwinner as a linebacker and served as the team captain in 1992. He was awarded the 1992 Student-Athlete of the Year Award and was also a First Team Academic All-Conference selection in that same year. Steinberg played on two national championship teams at NDSU in 1988 and 1990 and was a member of five NCC championship teams in seven years as a player and a graduate assistant coach.

Steinberg lives in Highlands Ranch with his wife, Becky, and their two children.
