ABOUT THE COURSE

LITTLETON, Colo. – The University of California at Davis earned an automatic berth to the 2003 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championships by winning the West Regional Title on Wednesday afternoon at The Meadows Golf Course. UC Davis finished with a 54-hole total of 24-under par 840 (279-277-284) to win the title.

CSU-Stanislaus (848) took second place in the West Region and was followed by CSU-Bakersfield (854), Western Washington (865), CSU-Chico (870), Grand Canyon and UC San Diego (both at 878) and Hawaii-Hilo (896).

Jay Westerlund of UC Davis claimed medalist honors with a total of 208 (67-71-70). Ron Killmer of CSUB was one stroke back at 209, while Jim Schafer and Ryan Thornberry of CSU-Stanislaus tied for third place with 54-hole totals of 210. Bill Noon of CSUB and Scott Gordon of UC Davis rounded out the top five as they registered identical scores of 211.

The highlight of the West Regional final round was turned in by Josh Immordino of Western Washington who tied the course-record with a seven-under par 65. With his record-setting round, Immordino climbed from 26th place into a tie for seventh.

UC Davis now advances to compete at the NCAA Division II National Championships at Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Oregon from May 20-23.

UC DAVIS HOLDS THREE SHOT LEAD AFTER SECOND ROUND OF NCAA DIVISION II WEST REGIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

LITTLETON, Colo. – The University of California at Davis followed Monday’s opening round 279 with an 11-under 277 on Tuesday at the second round of the 2003 NCAA West Regional Tournament at The Meadows Golf Course. UC Davis stands at 556 after the first 36 holes and leads second place CSU-Stanislaus by just three shots heading into Wednesday’s final 18 holes.

The top two teams in the West Region are followed by CSU-Baskersfield (569), UC San Diego (575), Western Washington (579), CSU-Chico (582), Grand Canyon (587) and Hawaii Hilo (600).

Ryan Thornberry of CSU-Stanislaus leads the individual race as he stands at 136 following rounds of 67 on Monday and 69 on Tuesday. Thornberry is one shot ahead of Eric Restrepo of UC Davis (68-69) and two shots ahead of Jay Westerlund of UC David (67-71). Three players are three shots off the lead, while a total of three other individuals are four strokes back.

The West Regional Championships will conlcude with an 18 hole round at The Meadows on Wednesday. The first tee time is scheduled for 8:00 am.

UC DAVIS TAKES FIRST ROUND LEAD AT NCAA DIVISION II WEST REGIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

LITTLETON, Colo. – The University of California at Davis shot a nine-under par 279 to take the first round lead at the 2003 NCAA Division II West Regional Golf Tournament which began Monday morning at The Meadows Golf Course.

UC Davis is followed by CSU-Stanislaus (282), CSU-Bakersfield (283), UC San Diego (285), Grand Canyon (295), Western Washington and Hawaii-Hilo (both at 297) and CSU Chico (300).

Jay Westerlund of UC Davis and Ryan Thornberry of CSU-Stanislaus each fired five-under 67 and are tied for the lead in the individual race after the opening round. Five other players broke 70 on day one, while a total of 18 players from the West Region shot par 72 or better to open play.

Round two is slated to take place on Tuesday morning at The Meadows with the first tee time scheduled for 8:00 am.
