COPSEY PLACES FIFTH IN 200 BREAST TO GARNER ALL-AMERICA HONORS GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Colorado Mines junior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) earned All-America honors for the second consecutive day as he claimed fifth place in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:05.83 on Saturday evening at the NCAA Division II Swimming National Championships at North Dakota University. Copsey, who placed fifth in the 100 Breast on Friday night to earn All-America accolades, advanced to the championships finals of the 200 Breast with a sixth place showing in Saturdays afternoons preliminaries. He recorded a time of 2:06.48 in the preliminary round. Also swimming on Saturday for Mines was senior Brooks Masterson (Greeley, Colo./University) who just missed out on qualifying for the consolation finals in the 200 Back. In Saturday mornings preliminary round, Masterson registered a school-record time of 1:53.24 to place 17th. The top 16 times advanced to the final round and Masterson was just .01 seconds out of the 16th spot. Copsey earned a pair of All-America honors at the championships for Mines. Also, junior Gretta Simpson earned All-America accolades with a seventh place showing in the 100 Fly (57.40), while Masterson was an all-america performer in the 400 Individual Medley as he placed 11th in a time of 4:05.57. As a team, Simpson led the Oredigger women to a 25th place showing with 12 points, while Copsey and Masterson helped the CSM men earn 34 points and finish in 20th place. The NCAA Championships concluded the 2002-03 season for Mines. -- orediggers -- SHANE COPSEY EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Colorado Mines junior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) became the third Oredigger swimmer to earn All-America accolades this year as he posted a fifth place showing in the 100 Breast in a time of 57.01 at the NCAA Division II National Championships Friday evening at North Dakota University. Copsey advanced to the championships finals of the 100 Breast with a fifth place showing in the preliminaries (57.64) Friday afternoon. CSM junior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) and senior Brooks Masterson (Greeley, Colo./University) also competed on Friday in the preliminaries, but did not make it to the finals as only the top-16 individuals in each event advance to the finals. Simpson, who earned All-America honors in the 100 Fly on Thursday, placed 27th in the 200 Fly prelims on Friday afternoon in a time of 2:14.49. Masterson, who finished 12th in the 400 IM on Thursday to earn all-american honors, claimed 18th in the 200 Fly (1:56.60) and 27th in the 100 Back (52.74) in Fridays preliminaries. The NCAA Division II Championships will conclude on Saturday. Masterson is slated to compete in the 200 Back, while Copsey will swim in the 200 Breast. -- orediggers -- SIMPSON AND MASTERSON EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS GRAND FORKS, N.D. Simpson qualified for the championship finals by placing seventh in the preliminaries in a school-record time of 57.24. It is the first time Simpson has earned All-America accolades in her career. Masterson, who was a six-time all-america performer last season, earned his honor this season by placing 11th in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:05.57. In the preliminaries, Masterson finished in ninth place (4:03.82), just .04 seconds out of qualifying for the championship finals. The NCAA Championships are slated to continue on Friday with the preliminaries at 10:00 am and the finals at 6:30 pm. Simpson is scheduled to compete in the 200 Fly, while Masterson has qualified in the 200 Fly and 100 Back. Also, junior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) will swim his first event of the championships on Friday (100 Breast). -- orediggers -- SWIMMERS CONCLUDE AT CENTRAL STATES CHAMPIONSHIPS SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Six male and one female from Colorado Mines finished the three day competition at the 2003 Central States Championships at Breech Pool on the campus of Drury Uinversity on Saturday night. The mens squad was fifth of five teams, while the womens team was seventh of seven teams. Drury won the mens championship with 1,037 points and was followed by Truman State (639), Missouri-Rolla (608), Metro State (410), Mines (306) and Lewis (200). Truman State captured the womens title with 1,078 points and was followed by Drury (809), Lewis (544), Metro State (242), Minnesota State Moorehead (239), Nebraska-Kearney (181) and Mines (40). During Saturdays competition, senior Brooks Masterson (Greeley, Colo./University) claimed second in the 200 Fly with an NCAA B cut time of 1:54.53 and also took third in the 200 Back with an NCAA B cut time of 1:54.73. Junior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) finished third int eh 200 Breast with an NCAA B cut time of 2:07.85, while senior Keith Dalke (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) was 13th in the 100 Free in a time of 48.27. The Central States Championships will continue through Saturday. -- orediggers -- CSM SWIMMING COMPETES AT BUFFALO INVITATIONAL BOULDER, Colo. The Colorado School of Mines mens and womens swimming teams were in action Saturday at the Buffalo Invitational at the University of Colorado and both Oredigger teams placed first of three teams. The Oredigger women totaled 317 points to outdistance Colorado (210) and Colorado College (90), while the CSM women tallied 321 points to finish ahead of Colorado (294) and Colorado College (52). For the mens squad, senior Brooks Masterson (Greeley, Colo./University) and junior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) each won three events. Masterson claimed first in the 200 Fly (2:00.21), 200 Back (2:01.01) and 100 Fly (52.81), while Copsey won the 100 Breast (59.61), 200 Breast (2:09.95) and the 200 IM (2:04.08). The Colorado School of Mines mens and womens swimming teams hosted Colorado College on Friday evening. The CSM men were victorious, 137-73, while womens team won, 112-107. Leading the way for the mens squad was senior Brooks Masterson (Greeley, Colo.University) who posted a B cut time in 100 Fly and also won the event. He also tallied a second place showing in the 500 Free (5:17.75). Freshman Andy McAliley (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) registered wins in the 1000 Free (10:12.24) and the 100 Back (57.89), while freshman Scott Harrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) won the 400 IM in 4:32.73 and the 100 Free in 50.15. The Colorado School of Mines mens and womens swimming teams competed at Metro State on Saturday afternoon and the men came away with a 105-82 victory, while the Mines womens squad posted a 216-146 win. The CSM womens team won 11-of-12 events at the meet, while the Oredigger men were victorious in 8-of-12 events for the afternoon. Leading the way for the CSM men was senior Brooks Masterson (Greeley, Colo./University) who posted victories in the 1000 Free (10:11.22) and the 100 Back (52.94). In addition, senior Keith Dalke (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) recorded victories in the 50 Free (22.16) and the 100 Free (49.01) for the Oredigger men, while freshman Andy McAliley (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) registered a time of 1:50.80 to claim the 200 Free. The Colorado School of Mines mens and womens swimming teams competed at the Colorado College Classic over the weekend. The mens team tallied a first place showing out of three teams with 852 points, while the womens team took third of five teams with 564 points. Finishing behind the CSM mens squad were Metro State (691) and Colorado College (526). Northern Colorado claimed first in the womens race with 1,073 points and was followed by Colorado State (568), Colorado Mines, Colorado College (391) and Metro State (66). Leading the way for the CSM womens team was junior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) who won both the 200 Fly in a time of 2:12.20 and the 100 Fly with a time of 58.74. Simpson also placed third in the 200 IM as she registered a time of 2:17.10. Also faring well for the womens team was senior Chris Arneson (Littleton, Colo./Douglas County) was tallied third place finishes in the 100 Back (1:03.91) and the 200 Back (2:19.61). For the mens squad, senior All-American Brooks Masterson (Greeley, Colo./University) tallied first place showings in four events. Masterson won the 400 IM (4:10.37), the 200 Fly (156.12), the 200 Back (1:56.67) and the 200 Free (1:44.72). In addition, junior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) claimed first place in the 100 Breast (58.18) and the 200 IM (1:59.23) and also took second in the 50 Free in a time of 22.21. The Colorado School of Mines womens swimming team competed at Northern Colorado with Metro State on Friday evening. Northern Colorado won the tri-meet with 107 points and was followed by Mines (73) and Metro State (18). Leading the way for the Orediggers was senior Christine Arneson (Littleton, Colo./Douglas County) who claimed second place in the 200 Back (2:19.94) and also third in the 100 Back (1:04.87). The men fell to Air Force, 155-75, while the women dropped a 195-40 decision to the Academy. The men also lost to North Dakota, 156-81, while the women fell to North Dakota, 185-50. Leading the way for the CSM women was junior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) who placed second in the 100 Fly with a time of 1:00.05. The womens team compiled 30 points and stands in seventh place out of eight teams, while the CSM men posted 148 points and is in fifth place out of five teams. Leading the way for the women was freshman Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) who placed 17th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.83, while junior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) placed 18th in the same event (2:18.87). In addition, the 200 Free Relay team posted a ninth place finish with a time of 1:44.62. The Colorado School of Mines mens swimming team opened its 2002-03 season by competing against the University of Wyoming and Metro State at Corbett Pool on Thursday evening. Wyoming won the meet with 145 points and was followed by Metro (90) and Mines (74). The Orediggers did not have an individual champion in any event, but several swimmers did fare well. Senior All-American Brooks Masterson (Greeley, Colo./University) registered a second place showing in the 200 Free with a time of 1:47.40, just .21 seconds off the first place finisher. Masterson also placed fourth in the 200 Fly (2:03.15). Freshman Andy McAliley (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) placed second in both the 1000 Free (10:47.31) and the 500 Free (5:10.10), while senior Luke Bernhardt (Olathe, Colo./Montrose) recorded a second place tally in the 50 Free with a time of 23.13. In addition, the Mines 400 Medley Relay squad notched a second place finish with a time of 3:37.62.
