MINES’ COPSEY AND SIMPSON EARN TWO ALL-AMERICAN HONORS AT
DIVISION II SWIMMING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Colorado School of Mines seniors Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) and Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) each earned two All-American honors by placing in the top-16 of their respective events at the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championships at Erie Community College’s Flickinger Center over the weekend.

Simpson earned All-American accolades by placing 13th in the 100 Free (52.74) and 16th in the 100 Fly (59.23) and also placed 31st in the 50 Free with a time of 24.72.

Copsey was an All-American in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke. He was fourth in the nation in the 100 Breast (56.97) and 10th in the 200 (2:06.48). Copsey also recorded a 30th place showing in the 200 Individual Medley (1:56.92).

MINES SENIOR SHANE COPSEY QUALIFIES FOR NATIONALS

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Colorado School of Mines senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) qualified for the NCAA Division II National Swimming and Diving Championships by posting an NCAA “A” cut time of 57.37 seconds in the 100 Breaststroke on Saturday afternoon at Delta State University.

It marks the third straight year Copsey has qualified for nationals and he will be out to improve upon last year’s fifth place finish in the 100 Breast at nationals.

Copsey will join Mines senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) at this year’s national championships after Simpson automatically qualified in the 100 Butterfly. She is also slated to compete in the 50, 100 and 200 Freestyles.

The 2004 NCAA Division II National Swimming and Diving Championships are sscheduled for March 10-13 in Buffalo, N.Y.

MINES SWIMMERS WRAP UP AT CENTRAL STATES CHAMPIONSHIPS

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s swim teams wrapped up competition at the 2004 Central States Championships on Saturday night. The women were fourth overall out of eight teams, while the CSM men placed fifth of six teams.

On Friday night, senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) posted an NCAA “A” automatic qualifying time of 57.57 seconds in the 100 Fly to take second place. In addition, senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) placed second in the 100 Breast with an NCAA “B” cut time of 57.96.

In Saturday’s finals, Simpson tallied an NCAA “B” cut time of 52.83 in the 100 Free to place second, while Copsey registered another NCAA “B” cut time of 2:07.07 to take home second place in the 200 Breast.

The 2004 NCAA Division II National Swimming and Diving Championships are slated for March 10-13 in Buffalo, N.Y.

MINES SWIMMERS COMPETE AT CENTRAL STATES CHAMPIONSHIPS

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s swimming teams continued competition at the 2004 Central States Conference Championships at Drury University’s Breech Pool on Thursday. The Oredigger women currently sit in fourth place out of eight teams and the Mines men reside in fifth place out of six teams.

Leading the way for the CSM women were senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) and sophomore Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Chenyenne Mountain) who each tallied sixth place finishes. Simpson’s came in the 50 Free where she posted an NCAA “B” cut time of 24.72, while Fry swam a 2:14.31 in the 200 IM. In addition, the 200 Freestyle Relay team captured third place with a time of 1:42.55.

On the men’s side, senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) recorded a 10th place showing in the 200 IM with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:57.92. It was the fifth best time in the finals and consolation finals.

The meet will continue through Saturday.

MINES SWIMMERS COMPETE AT CENTRAL STATES CHAMPIONSHIPS

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s swimming teams opened competition at the 2004 Central States Championships at at Breech Pool on the campus of Drury Uinversity Wednesday night. The meet began with two events last night, the 200 Medley Relay and the 1000 Freestyle.

The Oredigger women currently reside in third place of eight teams with 49 points, while the Mines men are tied for fourth place out of six teams with 35 points.

The CSM women picked up 30 points by placing fourth in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:56.85, while senior Trisha Malberg (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central) earned nine points for her ninth place showing in the 1000 Free (11:16.81).

The Oredigger men were sixth in the relay (1:38.64) to gain 26 points and sophomore Andy McAliley (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) was the top Oredigger male finisher in the 1000 Free as he was 11th with a time of 10:06.97.

The meet will continue through Saturday.

MINES SWIMMERS DROP DUALS AT COLORADO

BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action on Saturday morning at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The Oredigger women handed the Buffs a 911-717 setback, while the CSM men dropped a 1,027.5-957.5 decision.

CSM senior All-American Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) was the lone Oredigger to win two events as he posted victories in the 100 and 200 Breast.

On the women’s side, senior Libby Liston (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) won the 200 Free, sophomore Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) captured the 100 Free and senior Molly Zeller (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) won the 500 Free.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to action for a Last Chance Meet. The date and site will be determined.

MINES SWIMMERS FALL TO DENVER UNIVERSITY

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s swim teams were in action at home on Friday night against Denver University. The Division I Pioneers knocked off the Oredigger men, 148-106, while the DU women claimed a 156-98 win over Mines.

Leading the way for the Orediggers was senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) who set a pool record in the 200 Breast in winning the title with a time of 2:09.99. Copsey also won the 50 Free in a time of 22.00.

Senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) was the lone Oredigger female to win two events. She claimed first place finishes in the 100 Fly (58.49) and the 200 Free (2:01.90).

Mines will return to action tomorrow morning when it competes in the CU Buff Classic beginning at 10:00 am in Boulder.

MINES SWIMMERS KNOCK OFF COLORADO COLLEGE

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines swim teams were in action Saturday afternoon when they hosted Colorado College and both CSM teams came away with wins. The women’s squad pulled out a 152-143 win, despite giving up 30 points in diving, while the men’s team was victorious, 166-128.

Leading the way for the women’s team was senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) who set a school and pool record in the 100 Free with a time of 54.31. Simpson also won the 50 Free (25.25).

On the men’s side, senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) earned wins in the 100 Breast (59.18), the 100 Free (48.84) and the 200 IM (2:01.11).

Both teams will return to action on Friday night when they host Denver University beginning at 6:00 pm.

MINES SWIMMERS WIN DUAL MEETS AT METRO STATE

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action Saturday morning at Metro State and each team came away victorious. The men’s team earned a 128-54 victory over the Roadrunners, while the women’s team posted a 125-67 win.

The CSM men’s team, which captured wins in 10-of-13 events contested, received two wins apiece from senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) and sophomore Andy McAliley (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill). Copsey took home wins in the 200 Back (2:05.10) and the 200 Free (1:50.28), while McAliley was victorious in the 400 IM (4:21.89) and the 500 Free (5:04.72).

The Oredigger women’s team picked up wins in 10 of the 13 events swam this morning, including two from senior Trisha Malberg (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central) who captured the 200 Free (2:07.33) and the 500 Free (5:46.08).

Both teams will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Colorado College at 1:00 pm.

CSM WOMEN’S SWIMMERS FALL TO NORTHERN COLORADO, 173-104

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines women’s swim team was in action Friday night in Volk Gymnasium and dropped a 173-104 decision to Northern Colorado.

Leading the way for Mines was senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) who tallied a pair of first place finishes in the 50 Free (26.10) and the 200 Free (2:01.23). She also claimed second place in the 500 Free (5:44.60) and was the anchor of the 200 Free Relay which took first place in a time of 1:44.27. Also on the relay team were seniors Molly Zeller (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) and Heidi Bauer (Littleton, Colo./Mullen) and sophomore Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain).

Northern Colorado posted wins in nine events, including the 200 Medley Relay, but no Bear swimmer took home more than one title.

Both the Mines men’s and women’s teams will return to action Saturday morning when they compete at Metro State beginning at 10:00 am.

COLORDAO MINES MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMERS TOP COE COLLEGE

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines swim teams were in action Saturday afternoon and both the men’s and women’s teams came away with victories over Coe College. The men’s team was victorious, 169-71, while the Oredigger women earned a 126-120 win over the Hawks.

The CSM men picked up wins in 12 of the 15 events. Leading the way was senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) who set a pool-record in the 200 Breast (2:11.70) and also won the 100 Backstroke in 57.09.

On the women’s side, senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) and sophomore Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) each picked up three victories on the afternoon. In all, the Oredigger women won nine of the 15 events contested.

Simpson was victorios in the 1000 Free (12:07.91), the 50 Free (25.99) and the 100 Free (56.58), while Fry registered wins in the 200 Free (2:04.05), the 200 IM (2:21.68) and the 200 Back (2:41.16).

The CSM women’s team will return to action on Friday night when it hosts Northern Colorado beginning at 6:00 pm.

MINES SWIMMERS COMPETE AT COLORADO COLLEGE CLASSIC

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s swimming teams competed at the Colorado College Classic over the weekend. The men’s team placed second of four teams with 623 points, while the women’s team was third of four teams with 482 points.

CSM senior All-American Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) posted NCAA “B” cuts in the 100 and 200 Breast en route to victories in each event. He won the 100 in 57.91 and posted a time of 2:06.61 to win the 200.

Other winners on the men’s side included sophomore Nate Skitt (Westminster, Colo./Westminster) who took home the title in the 1-meter diving event with 282.45 points, as well as sophomore Scott Harrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) who won the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.69.

On the women’s side, senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction) won the 100 Fly with an NCAA “B” cut time of 59.04.

Both teams will take an extended break from competitive action for the holidays and return to action on Jan. 10 when they host Coe College at 1:00 pm.

CSM SWIMMERS COMPETE AT DENVER UNIVERSITY

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines swim teams were in action Friday evening at Denver University along with South Dakota and Metro State. The men’s team posted a 1-2 mark with a win over Metro State, while the CSM women also went 1-2. Its victory also came over Metro State.

Leading the way for the men’s squad was senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) who won the 200 Breast with an NCAA “B” cut time of 2:09.74. It is the fastest Division II time swam this season. Cospey also placed first in the 100 Free (48.04) and second in the 200 IM (1:59.55).

Sophomore Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) led the women’s team with three second place finishes. Fry was the runner-up in the 200 IM (2:14.56), the 100 Free (55.42) and the 200 Breast (2:40.21).

Both teams will return to action from Dec. 12-14 when they compete at the Colorado College Classic.

MINES SWIMMERS BOTH LOSE AT COLORADO COLLEGE

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines swim teams were in action Saturday afternoon at Colorado College. The men’s team dropped a 111-98 decision, while the women’s team fell, 130-96. Three mens’’s swimmers won two events each, while a pair of CSM women each earned two first place finishes.

Senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) claimed first in the 400 IM (4:30.19) and the 200 Back (2:15.75). Sophomore Andy McAliley (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) placed first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:54.02 and the 200 Back with a time of 2:05.77, while freshman Dillon Hamm (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Academy) was first in the 500 Free (5:16.06) and the 1000 Free (10:59.23).

On the women’s side, senior Molly Zeller (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) placed first in the 400 IM (5:08.56) and the 200 Fly (2:24.86), while sophomore Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) was first in the 100 Free in a time of 56.09 and the 200 Free in 2:02.88.

Both teams will return to action on Friday when they compete at Denver University beginning at 6:00 pm. Metro State and South Dakota are also scheduled to compete.

CSM WOMEN'S SWIMMING COMPETES AT NORTHERN COLORADO

COMPLETE RESULTS

GREELEY, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines women’s swimming team was in action Friday night at Northern Colorado. The Orediggers placed second in the three-way meet as they totaled 80 points. UNC won the event with 188 points, while Nebraska-Kearney placed third with 28 points.

Sophomore Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) led Mines as she won three events. Fry posted victories in the 200 Fly (2:20.68), the 200 Breast (2:40.19) and the 200 IM (2:17.04). Senior Molly Zeller (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) was the only other Oredigger to win an event as she placed first in the 50 Free with a time of 26.24.

Zeller also claimed second in the 500 Free with a time of 5:46.04 and third in the 1000 Free (12:02.70).

Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to action Saturday when they compete at Colorado College. The meet is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

MINES MEN’S SWIMMERS LOSE AT WYOMING, 134-70

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s swimming team dropped a 134-70 decision at the Universtiy of Wyoming’s Corbett Pool on Saturday afternoon, 134-70.

Senior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) came up with the Orediggers lone victory of the meet at he placed first in the 100 Free with a time of 49.10. Copsey also claimed second place in the 100 Breast (1:00.16) as he placed second to Wyoming All-American Scott Usher for the second time this season.

Junior Erik Dean (Eugene, Ore./North) placed second in the 500 Free (5:15.38), while the CSM team claimed second in the 200 Medley Relay (1:45.06) and the 200 Free (1:32.24).

Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to action on Saturday when they compete at Colorado College, while the women will swim on Friday evening at Northern Colorado with Nebraska-Kearney.

CSM SWIMMING COMPETES TWICE OVER THE WEEKEND

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines swimming team was in action twice over the weekend. On Friday, the squads competed at the Air Force Dual Meet. The men's team knocked off Colorado College and Metro State, but fell to North Dakota and Air Force. The women defeated Metro State, but dropped their other three duals.

On Saturday, the women's squad returned to action at Metro State and handed the Roadrunners a loss, but lost to Nebraska Omaha.

Junior Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) provided CSM with its biggest highlight of the weekend as he earned an NCAA II "B" cut in the 100 Breast on Friday night when he captured the title with a time of 59:52. It marked the second year in a row that Copsey has won the event against the two high-powered programs.

In Saturday's meet, the Oredigger women posted seven first place finishes, including two by senior Gretta Simpson (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction). She won the 200 Fly (2:16.84) and the 200 IM (2:16.81).

Mines will return to action on Friday when it hosts the CU Club Team. On Saurday, the CSM men's squad will travel to Wyoming to take on the Cowboys and Metro State.

MINES SWIMMING OPENS SEASON AT COLORADO STATE

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s swimming teams opened their 2003-04 seasons at the Colorado State Early Bird Invitational this past weekend. The men’s squad placed fourth of six teams with 132 points, while the women’s team earned a fourth place finish out of four teams with 381.50 points.

CSM senior All-American Shane Copsey (Aurora, Colo./Aurora) recorded the best finish by an Oredigger as he placed second in the 100 Breast in a time of 1:00.66. Copsey also paced seventh in the 100 Free (49.42). Sophomore Andy McAliley (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) tallied a pair of top-10 finishes as he was sixth in the 400 IM (4:25.71) and seventh in the 200 Back (2:02.73).

On the women’s side, sophomore Megan Fry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) placed ninth in the 200 IM (2:16.76) and 11th in the 200 Free (2:02.57) and 100 Free (59.93).

Both teams will return to action on Friday when they compete at the U.S. Air Force Academy beginning at 5:00 pm. North Dakota will also compete at the meet. In addtion, Mines will compete at Metro State with Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday beginning at 5:00 pm.
