HANNAH DAVEY WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 3,000-METER STEEPLECHASE AS FOUR CSM ATHLETES COMPETE AT NATIONALS

WALNUT, Calif. -- Colorado School of Mines sophomore Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) claimed the 2004 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Mount San Antonio College. Davey, who placed fourth in the preliminaries, recorded a time of 10:33.72 to claim the national title. The 10 points she earned helped the Oredigger women place 19th overall as a team with 14 points.

Davey becomes the first Mines track and field athlete to win a national championship and is also the first female in school-history to win a national title. She is the first NCAA II National Champion in Mines athletics since swimmer Brian Pursley won the 100-yard Breaststroke in 2001.

Sophomore Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) scored the other four points for CSM with her fifth place showing in the 3,000-meter run (9:45.05). It marked the third time Beresford has earned All-American honors at Mines. She also registered an 11th place showing in the 5,000-meter run (17:54.51) on Saturday night.

The Oredigger men had two athletes compete at nationals, but neither earned All-American status. Senior Jason Stewart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) placed 13th in the 1,500-meter run preliminaries. He missed qualifying for the finals by one spot as the top-12 advanced.

Junior Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) ran in the 800-meters and placed 12th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:52.20.

The national championships conclude the 2004 season for Mines.

FIVE MINES TRACK ATHLETES IN ACTION OVER THE WEEKEND

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines men’s track and field team had five athletes compete at the ATG Sports Last Chance Qualifier at Emporia State’s Fran Welch Stadium/Zola Witten Track on Saturday afternoon.

Leading the way was junior Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) who claimed second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.15. Senior Jason Stewart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) was third in the 1,500-meter run (3:57.82), while junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.28.

Freshman Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) recorded a 12th place showing in the 5,000-meter run (15:04.23), while junior Jimmy Hargrove (Kirbyville, Texas/Buna) rounded out the Oredigger athletes with a 13th place finish in the discus (157’-1’’).

All CSM athletes will now wait and see if their marks from the outdoor season will qualify them for the 2004 NCAA II Outdoor National Championships to be contested from May 27-29 in Walnut, Calif. The final list of qualifiers is scheduled to be announced on Tuesday.

MINES TRACK COMPETES AT RMAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

HAYS, Kan. -- The Colorado School of Mines outdoor track and field teams were in action over the weekend at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships contested at Fort Hays State University. The Oredigger men placed sixth of seven teams with 42 points, while the Mines women were also sixth of seven teams with 33 points.

Leading the way for the CSM women’s squad was sophomore Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) who totaled 10 points at the championships with a second place showing in the 800-meter run (2:15.38) and a seventh place finish in the 3,000-meter run (10:36.98). Sophomore Gwen Woods (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) was fourth in the 10,000-meter run (41:53.61), while classmate Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:17.63).

On the men’s side, junior Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) was the lone Oredigger athlete to bring home a title as he captured the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.22.

Senior Tyson Parrott (Kremmling, Colo./West Grand) placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6’-7’’, while junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) registered a fifth place showing in the 800-meter run (1:55.38).

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Colorado School of Mines outdoor track and field teams were in action on Saturday at the University of New Mexico’s Modrall Sperling Don Kirby Memorial Invitational. The meet was unscored.

Leading the way for the Orediggers was junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) who placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.76. He defeated several Division I runners and was just .50 seconds behind Drew Morano of Colorado State, who won the event.

Senior Tyson Parrott (Kremmling, Colo./West Grand) also fared well for CSM as he finished fifth in the high jump (6’-4.75’’), while junior Jen Conty (Pasu Robles, La./Pasu Robles) had a 10th place sho


wing in the hammer throw (140’-11’’) to lead the CSM women’s squad.

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines outdoor track and field teams were in action at two locations over the weekend as the team split up. Some of the athletes competed at the Grizzly Open at Adams State’s Rex Stadium, while other Oredigger athletes competed at Colorado State’s Jack Christiansen Invitational.

CSM scored five first place finishes at Adams State, highlighted by sophomore Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) who took first in the triple jump and also scored a second place showing in the high jump.

Also winning events at ASC were junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) in the 400-meter dash (48.30), sophomore Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth) in the 800-meter run (2:21.93), junior Tom Huseas (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) in the javelin (135’-4’’) and the men’s 4x400 relay team (3:16.98).

WALNUT, Calif.. -- The Colorado School of Mines outdoor track and field teams were in action over the weekend in California. On Friday, the team competed at the Pomona Pitzer Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays and on Saturday, the squad was in action at Long Beach State and again at the Mt. SAC Relays.

MINES TRACK COMPETES AT DIVISION II CHALLENGE

EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Colorado School of Mines track and field teams were in action over the weekend at the Godfather’s Division II Challenge at Emporia State University’s Zola Witten Track. The Oredigger men placed 12th of 19 teams, while the women’s squad was 21st of 21 teams.

Leading the way for the CSM men was junior Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) who won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.28. Junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) was sixth in the 400-meter run (49.61), while freshman Aaron Heun (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) claimed fourth place in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 32:19.10.

On the women’s side, sophomore Gwen Woods (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) was the lone athlete to score points as she took sixth place in the 10,000-meter run (40:37.11).

Both teams are slated to return to action this weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays.

MINES TRACK OPENS COMPETES AT TOM BENICH CLASSIC

GREELEY, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines outdoor track and field teams were in action Saturday at the Tom Benich Classic at Northern Colorado’s Nottingham Field. Several Mines individuals turned in outstanding performances at the unscored meet.

On the women’s side, sophomore Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) tied for second in the high jump (5’-3’’) and also took home third place in the triple jump with a leap of 36’-5.75’’. Sophomore Loren Large (Thornton, Colo./Skyview) was fouth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:47.02, while senior Randi Crowder (Alamosa, Colo./Alamosa) claimed sixth place in the high jump (5’-1’’).

For the Oredigger men, senior Sean Moran (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) recorded a third place showing in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:03.04. Junior Chris Schaumberg (Greeley, Colo./University) took fourth in the 800-meter run (1:56.90) and junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) was sixth in the 400-meter dash in 49.32.

Both teams are slated to return to action on Saturday when they compete at the Colorado College Invitational.

MINES TRACK OPENS OUTDOOR SEASON AT ROB UPTON OPEN

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines track and field teams opened the 2004 outdoor season by competing at the Rob Upton Open at Colorado State University’s Jack Christiansen Track. The CSM men’s team placed fifth of nine teams with 38 points, while the Oredigger women also tallied a fifth place showing out of nine teams with 17 points.

Leading the way for the men’s squad was junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) who won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.02. Senior Tyson Parrott (Kremling, Colo./West Grand) finished third in the high jump (6’-6’’) for Mines.

On the women’s side, sophomore All-American Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) scored 10 of her teams 17 points. She tallied six points with a third place finish in the triple jump (36’-3’’), and two points for finishing seventh in the high jump (5’-4’’) and the long jump (16’-5.75’’).

The teams will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Northern Colorado to participate in the Tom Benich Classic.

BOSTON, Mass. – Five individuals from the Colorado School of Mines indoor track and field teams competed at the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.

Leading the way was sophomore Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) who tied for fifth place in the high jump (5’-7’’) to earn All-American honors for the first time in her career.

On the men’s side, the 4x400 relay team placed fifth with a time of 3:14.24 to also capture All-American accolades. The team consisted on juniors Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch), Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill), Chris Schaumberg (Greeley, Colo./University) and sophomore Ben MacLeay (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview).

Nichols’ finish helped the CSM women place 35th overall, while the Oredigger men registered a 31st place showing at nationals.

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines indoor track and field teams hosted the 2004 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday in Steinhauer Fieldhouse. Both teams finished sixth out of seven teams.

Junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) was the lone Oredigger individual to win an event as he placed first in the 400-meter dash with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time of 49.10. In addition, the CSM 4x400 relay team provisionally qualified for nationals with a first place time of 3:18.78 in the meet’s final event.

Junior Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) fared well in the 800-meter dash as he placed second overall with a time of 1:56.05

On the women’s side, sophomore Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) was second in both the triple jump (38’0.75’’) and the high jump (5’-7.25’’). Both marks were good enough to provisionally qualify her for nationals. Sophomore Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth) was fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.47).

The athletes will now wait and see if their marks are good enough to qualify for the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championships to take place Mar. 12-13 in Boston, Mass.

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines indoor track and field teams hosted the 2004 Twilight Open on Friday night in Steinhauer Fieldhouse. The meet was unscored.

The CSM men received a first place finish from junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) in the 400-meter dash (50.06). The 4x400 relay team also took home first place with a time of 3:19.47.

Leading the way for the Mines women was sophomore Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) who won the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 38’-0.75’’. She was the lone Oredigger female to win an event.

Mines will return to action on Friday and Saturday when it hosts the 2004 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. Action will begin at 2:00 pm on Friday and 9:00 am on Saturday.

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams hosted their second event of the season on Saturday when the teams welcomed teams to Steinhauer Fieldhouse for the All-Comers Meet. The meet was unscored.

On the men’s side, CSM scored four victories, including one by the 4x400 relay team which captured the event with a time of 3:20.59. In addition, senior Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) won the 800-meter run (1:55.82), senior Jason Stewart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) won the mile run (4:25.67) and junior Derek Thornton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) claimed the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.17.

For the Mines women, sophomore Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) won three events as she took first places in the long jump (17’-6.6’’), the truple jump (37’-6.25’’) and the high jump (5’-7’’).

Both teams will be back in action next Saturday when they host the CSM Twilight Open in Steinhauer Fieldhouse beginning at 3:00 pm.

The Oredigger men tied for third place out of six teams with Northern Colorado with 74 points, while the CSM women were fourth of six teams with 70 points.

Leading the way for Mines was sophomore Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) who won the triple jump with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 37’-10’’.

Both teams will be out of action next weekend and return to competitive action on Feb. 14 when they host the All-Comers Meet in Steinhauer Fieldhouse.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines indoor track and field teams competed at the Air Force Invitational this past weekend. No team scores were kept at the invitational.

On the men’s side, senior Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and freshman Michael Rooney (Arlington, Va./Gonzaga) each turned in third place performances. Peacock was third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.75, while Rooney claimed third place in the 3,000-meter run (9:26.91).

For the CSM women, sophomore Gina Nichols (Canon City, Colo./Canon City) was eighth in the high jump (5’-3’’) and the triple jump (37’-3’’).

Both teams will return to action when they hoost the Joe Davies’ Invitational on Saturday in the Steinhauer Fieldhouse.

MINES INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD OPENS SEASON AT COLORADO INVITE

BOULDER, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams opened the 2004 season by competing at the unscored University of Colorado Invitational on Friday at Balch Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth) notched a pair of wins to lead the women’s team. Gardiner took first place in the 200-meter run with a time of 27.76 and in the 400-meter run in a time of 1:02.29.

Senior Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) was the lone Mines athlete to win an event as he claimed the 600-yard run in a time of 1:13.32.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to action on Jan. 23-24 when they compete at the Air Force Invitational.
