Orediggers Track Team Finishes
Season with Four All-Americans
EMPORIA, Kan. - The Colorado School of Mines track and field team competed this past weekend at the Division II National Championships in Emporia, Kan. Mines sent five individuals and came home with four All-Americans. Leading the Orediggers was junior Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty). Hamilton competed in two events at the Championships, where he earned All-American honors in both. His first event of the meet took place Thursday night in the men's 10,000 meters. His time of 30:15.82 earned him third place and a spot on the All-American team. To earn All-American one must finish in the top eight. Hamilton went on to finish sixth in the men's 5,000 meters Saturday afternoon, with a time of 14:55.61, earning him his second All-American award of the meet. After finishing first in the prelims in the men's 1500, Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) went on to finish sixth in the finals with a time of 4:04.04. His sixth place finish earned him All-American honors. Also finishing sixth in his event and earning All-American honors was Ryan Miles (Gretna, Neb./Gretna), Miles finished sixth in the Steeplechase with a time of 9:26.91. Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) was the only women for Mines to finish in the top eight earning All-American. Beresford finished third in the women's 1500 with a time of 4:38.09. Teammate Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) just missed the top eight, finishing ninth in the 1500 with a time of 4:48.15, just one second behind eighth place. As a team, the men finished 18th out of 50 teams with 15 points while the women were 33rd of 57 teams with six points. -Orediggers- Mines Sends Five to Outdoor Nationals GOLDEN, Colo.. - The Colorado School of Mines track team will send five of its athletes to compete in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Emporia, Kansas May 25-27. Three men and two women will make the trip to Emporia, Kansas in two weeks where they will take part in the National Meet. Both Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) and Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) qualified in the women's 1500 meter event. Beresford goes in ranked fourth with a time of 4:26.93 while Peddle sits in 15th with a 4:38.82. Beresford was the runner up at the Indoor National Championships in the mile, this past March. On the men's side, Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) will make an appearance in both the 800 meters and the 1500 meters. His time of 1:50.99 ranks him fifth in the 800, while he ranks first in all of Division II in the 1500 with a time of 3:45.33. Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) will also compete in two events for the Orediggers, the senior qualified in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He currently ranks seventh in the 5k and third in the 10k with a time of 29:33.60. Rounding out the competitors for the Orediggers will be Ryan Miles (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) who will take part in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase event. Miles will go into the race ranked 17th. The meet will begin Thursday, May 25th and will continue through Saturday, May 27th. -Orediggers- Mines Sends Runners to Compete in Concordia Last Chance Twilight Meet CONCORDIA, Neb. - The Colorado School of Mines men's and women's track and field teams sent some runners this past weekend to compete in a last chance meet in Concordia, Neb. The meet was one last chance for runners to compete and try to qualify for the national meet which will be held May 25-27 in Emporia, Kan. For one Oredigger, the meet served its purpose as Dan Liechty (Winterset, Iowa/ Winterset) ran a national provisional qualifying time of 9:22.45 in the men's steeplechase. His time was good enough for a second place finish. Whether his time will get him into the the national meet, time will only tell. Final declarations will be made later this week. Also fairing well at the meet were Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) and Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth). The two finished first and second in the women's 800 meters. Beresford won the event with a time of 2:14.93 while Gardiner was second with a 2:16.23. Next for Mines will be the Division II National Meet May 25-27 at Emporia State College in Kansas. Qualifiers will be announced later this week. -Orediggers- Mines Track Team Finishes Sixth and Seventh at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships GUNNISON, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's and women's track and field teams have been competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships at Western State for the past three days. After three days of competition the men's squad finished sixth out of seven teams, while the women were seventh out of nine teams. Fort Hays State won the men's team title while Adams State won their third straight Outdoor Team Conference Title on the women's side. The Orediggers had a succussful weekend, as many earned First and Second Team All-Conference honors. The top three in each event earns First Team honors while 4th through 6th earn Second Team. Four women earned conference honors, while Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth) and Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) also earned nationally qualifying marks. Serena Gardiner's third place finish in the 800 meter not only earned her First Team All-Conference honors, but her time of 2:15.42 also earned her a provisionally qualifying mark for the Outdoor National Championships. Heather Beresford also finished third in her event, the 1500 meters, her time of 4:51.36 is a provisional time and earned her First Team All-Conference. Beresford however, has already ran a 4:26 in the event which puts her in the top five in Division II. Gina Nichols (Cannon City, Colo./Cannon City) and Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) both earned Second Team All-Conference accolades. Peddle's fourth place finish in the 1500 earned her such honors, while Nichols finished sixth in the High Jump. On the men's side, one athlete earned First Team honors while five ohters were Second Team All-Conference. Larry McDaris was the lone male to earn First Team All-Conference
in the second day of competition with his second place finish in the
1500 meters. Teammates Joel Hamilton (4th, 5,000) Mines will have one last opportunity to qualify for the Division II National Championships, as some will compete in the last chance meet in Emporia, Kansas this next weekend. For many, the RMAC was the last meet of the season.

Mines Men's Track Team in Fifth After Day One of Competition GUNNISON, Colo. - After the first day of competition at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the men's team sits in fifth while the women are in seventh. The Orediggers had three individuals earn All-Conference awards, while three qualified for the finals in their events. Day one of competition consisted of mostly prelims with a couple final events. Mines had three individuals earn All-Conference in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase final that took place Monday afternoon. In the women's 3,000 meter Steeplechase, Senior Hannah Davey-Briggs (Evergreen, Colo./Evegreen) ran to a third place finish with a time of 12:02.4, earning her All-Conference honors. In the men's Steeplechase, Ryan Miles (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) also finished third with a time of 9:51.9, while teammate Dan Liechty finished fifth in a time of 9:54.1, earning him second team All-Conference awards. Along with these individuals, three men qualified for the finals which will be held today. Ian Storz will compete in the finals of the 100 meter hurdles, while Jeremy Wells will compete in the 400 meter hurdle finals and Ross Wagle in the 400 meter dash finals. Today will be the last day of competition where all final
events will be ran. McDaris Shines at the Don Kirby Open in New Mexico Albuquerque, N.M. - Junior distance runner Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) led the way this past weekend at the Don Kirby Open in Albuquerque, New Mexico. McDaris ran to a victory in the men's mile while three others finished in the top ten. McDaris ran a time of 3:51.68 to give him the victory along with an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA National Meet. His time currently ranks him third in Division II. Three of McDaris' teammates also faired well in the race as Clifton Oertli (4:01.03, Littleton, Colo./Columbine), Michael Rooney (4:02.11, Arlington, VA./Gonzaga) and Ryan Miles (4:02.45, Gretna, Neb./Gretna) finished the race in 6th, 7th and 8th places. For the women, Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo. /Elizabeth) faired well in the 800 meters, where she finished in a time of 2:18.77 good enough for third place. Mines will compete May 7-9 in Gunnison, Colo. when Western
State hosts the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. -Orediggers- CSM Track Team Qualifies Six for Nationals Over the Weekend POMONA, Cali. - The Colorado School of Mines track team competed in California over the weekend. With six national qualifiers and five school records broken, the weekend proved to be a successful one. Heather Beresford had a school record breaking weekend, as she broke two of Mines' school records. Runner up in the Mile this last indoor season, Beresford again shined as she broke school records in both the 1500 and 800 meter dashes. Her time of 4:26.93 in the 1500 not only broke her previous record of 4:35.20 but it also automatically qualified her in the event for the Outdoor National Championships. In the 800, Beresford also broke the previous school record of 2:13.90 that was set back in 1985. Her time of 2:13.39 also earned her a provisional qualifying mark. Teammate Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) also provisionally qualified in the 1500 with a time of 4:38.82. For the men, Larry McDaris, Joel Hamilton and Ryan Miles all three broke school records along with running qualifying times. McDaris set his mark in the 1500 meters as he ran a school record breaking time of 3:48.45, breaking the old school record by three seconds. Hamilton crushed the old school record in the men's 10,000 meter run, running a time of 29:33.60, 1 minute and 23 seconds faster than Martin Weiss' record of 30:53.33. Miles wrapped up the school record breaking weekend as he broke his own record in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:15.67, 21 seconds better than his previous record of 9:36. Saturday in -Orediggers- Track and Field Competes at The University of Colorado Invite Over the Weekend BOULDER, Colo. - The men's and women's track and field teams competed at The University of Colorado Invitational this past weekend in Boulder, Colo. The Orediggers were one of two Division II teams at the meet. Freshman Alex Lockhart (Swink, Colo./Swink) highlighted the day with his first place finish in the men's high jump. His jump of 6 feet 8 inches was the first out of nine competitors, all which were from Division I schools. Also performing well on the men's side was Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer). McDaris ran a provisional qualifying time for the Outdoor Championships in the men's 800 meter run. His time of 1:51.68 qualifies him for the National Championships and earned him a fourth place overall finish. On the women's side, Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) and Hannah Davey-Briggs (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) ran to a fourth and fifth place finish in the women's 3,000 meters. Beresford's time of 10:26.38 was the fastest for Division II runners and was a provisional qualifying time, while Davey-Briggs time of 10:58.53 was second. The track and field team will compete in one of the biggest
meets of the season this coming weekend. The team will be in California
where they will take place in the Pomona Pitzer and Mt. SAC Relays April
13-15. -OREDIGGERS- HAMILTON WINS 5,000 METERS AT STANFORD INVITATIONAL PALO ALTO, CA. - Colorado School of Mines track runner Joel Hamilton got his outdoor track season started off on the right foot this past weekend. Hamilton finished first in his 5,000 meter run heat in California at the Division I Stanford Invitational. The junior's time of 14:19.89 was good enough for a three second victory over second places, Chris Cirino from UC-Davis. The time of 14:19.89 also provisionally qualifies Hamilton for the Outdoor National Championships, to be held at the end of May in Emporia, Kan. Hamilton finished sixth at the Indoor National Championships in March in the 5,000 meters and was also a member of the Distance Medley Relay team that finished fourth. The track and field team will return to action this weekend at The University of Colorado Invitational in Boulder, Colo. -OREDIGGERS-
CSM INDOOR TRACK TEAM POST TOP-15 FINISHES AT NATIONALS BOSTON, Mass. - Both the Colorado School of Mines men's and women's indoor track and field teams posted top-15 finishes at the 2006 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships held Friday and Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center. On Friday, the women's Distance Medley Relay Team placed second overall, while the men's squad was fourth. All four runners on each team earned All-American honors. On Saturday, CSM senior Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) finished second in the mile run for the second straight year. Her time of 4:47.69 set a school record and was just .06 seconds behind the winner. On the men's side, junior Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run in a school-record time of 14:26.85. In addition, junior Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) was third in the mile run with a time of 4:08.13, less than one second behind the top two finishers. For their efforts, Beresford, Hamilton and McDaris earned All-American accolades in their respective events. The meet concludes the 2006 indoor season for CSM. The teams will open the outdoor season on Apr. 1 at the Tom Benich Classic in Greeley, Colo.
-OREDIGGERS- CSM INDOOR TRACK FARING WELL AT DII NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS BOSTON, Mass. - The Colorado School of Mines men's and women's indoor track and field teams are faring well at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships being contested Friday and Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center. The CSM women are currently in eighth place overall with the eight points earned from the Distance Medley Relay Team that placed second in the country earlier Friday. The team of seniors Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer), Hannah Davey-Briggs (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) and Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth) and junior Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) ran a school-record time of 11:39.02 to place second behind Adams State. The group earned All-American honors for their finish. The old school-record time was 12:13.40 set last year. In addition, Beresford ran 4:54.43 to place fifth in the qualifying for the mile run. She will compete in the finals on Saturday. Last year, Beresford was the runner-up at nationals. On the men's side, the Distance Medley Relay Team of juniors Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty), Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer), Ryan Miles (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) and freshman Chris Fitzpatrick (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge) placed fourth overall in 9:57.14 to help CSM to a 13th place standing after day one. Their time bettered the school record by seven seconds. Like the women's team, the group garnered All-American accolades. McDaris also qualified for the mile run finals by winning the qualifying with a time of 4:05.58, the best posted in Division II this season. Miles also ran in the qualifying round, but finished 16th in 4:16.52 and did not earn a spot in Saturday's finals. Hamilton is slated to run in Saturday's 5,000-meter finals.
-OREDIGGERS- CSM Track Team Sends Eight to Indoor Nationals GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines track team will be sending eight individuals to the Division II Indoor National Championships March 10-11 in Boston, Mass. Mines will be sending four females and four males to represent Mines. Heather Beresford (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer) is the lone woman's Oredigger that will be running in an individual event. Beresford is set to compete in the women's mile where she is ranked fourth going into the race. Last year, Beresford finished second in this event at Indoor Nationals. Along with Heather, three other women will join her on the Distance Medley Relay team. Hannah Davey-Briggs (Evergreen, Colo.Evergreen), Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) and Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth) all will make the trip to Boston to run on the DMR. They are ranked eighth out of 11 teams and will look to improve upon their 10th place finish from last year. For the men, both Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer)
and Ryan Miles (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) will compete in the men's mile.
McDaris sits in ninth in the event with a time of 4:08.82 while Miles
is 16th with a 4:11.26. Joel Hamilton will also compete in an individual
event, as he ranks 10th in the men's 5000 meters. All three of these
men will also take part in the Distance Medley Relay, along with teammate
Chris Fitzpatrick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.ThunerRidge). The men are ranked
eighth out of ten teams and will also look to improve last years finish

Chadron, Neb. - The Colorado School of Mines men's and women's track and field teams both finished sixth this weekend at the Indoor Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships held in Chadron, Nebraska. The women finished sixth with 51 points while the men were sixth with 44. The team places were the exact same on both the men's and women's sides. Adams State won both team titles while Nebraska Kearney was second, Chadron State third, Western State fourth, Fort Hays State fifth and CU- Colorado Springs in seventh. Senior Heather Beresford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) was Mines' shining star as she was the Conference Champion in both the women's 800 meter and mile run. She also was a member of the second place Distance Medley Relay team consisting of Hannah Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen), Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth) and Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West). Beresford ran to a 2:15.22 time in the 800 giving her a three second lead over Mines' Gardiner who finished second in the race in a time of 2:18.79. In the mile, Beresford beat second place, Adams State's Emily Mortensen by less than a second. Her time of 4:56.68 out bested Mortensen's 5:57.56. Also scoring points for Mines in this event was Peddle who was seventh in a time of 5:12.90. Also finishing well for the Orediggers on the women's side was jumper Gina Nichols. Nichols finished third in the High Jump with a jump of 5'3". For the men, Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) led the way with two third place finishes. McDaris finished third in both the mile and the 800 meters. His time of 4:21.78 was just four one hundreths of a second behind first place Mario Macias from Adams State who ran 4:21.31. In the 800 his time of 1:55.35 game him another third place finish. McDaris was also on the second place Distance Medley Relay team of Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty, Vlad Kauffman (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Ryan Miles (Gretna, Neb./Gretna). Freshman Alex Lockhart (Swink, Colo./Swink) and Hamilton also scored some points for the Orediggers, as they each finished fourth in their events. Lockhart was fourth in the high jump with a jump of 6'5" while Hamilton was fourth in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:38.30. The RMAC Champions was the end of the indoor season for
most athletes, while some will compete one more time at the Division
II Indoor National Championships March 10-14 in Boston, Mass. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM Track and Field Team Split Into Half to Compete Golden, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines track and field teams were split into half Friday night as some stayed to compete in the CSM Twilight Meet while others traveled to The University of Nebraska to compete in the Praire Wolf Invitational. Mines had one provisional qualifier on the night, while three individuals improved their previous provisional qualifying times. In Nebraska, Senior Heather Beresford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) ran to a provisional mark in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:13.50 which put her second overall and first for Division II runners. Beresford also ran to a second place overall finish in the women's mile improving her previous time of 4:52.66 to 4:52.30, she was also first for Division II runners in the mile. Junior Joel Hamilton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) improved his time in the men's 5000 meters from a 14:41.63 to a 14:32.06. Hamilton was first for collegiate runners, finishing second only behind his coach, Art Siemers who won the race in 14:19. Also improving his national qualifying time was Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer), McDaris won the men's mile with a time of 4:08.82 besting his previous time of 4:1.79. While these three had great performances in Nebraska others were also competing well here in Golden at the Twilight Meet. Two women ran to victories in their events. Sydney Laws won the women's 800 meter with a time of 2:30.32 while teammate Courtney Rohde won the women's mile with a time of 5:37.98. Orediggers Daniel Huck ran to victory in the men's 800 meter in a time of 1:59.57, while thrower Colin Donohue also got a victory in the weight throw with a distance of 15.25. Most of Mines track and field athletes will wrap up their indoor season this coming weekend when they will compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships held in Chadron, Neb. For a few, it will be preparation for the National meet which will be March 11-14 in Boston, Mass. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM Track and Field Team Host All-Comers Meet Golden, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines track and field team hosted the second of the three home meets this season, with the All-Comers meet Saturday afternoon. Both the men's and women's Distance Medley Relays highlighted the day with outstanding performances. Along with sprinter Michael Curl's performance in the men's 60 meter dash The women's relay team of Melanie Peddle, Hannah Davey, Serena Gardiner and Heather Beresford not only broke their own fieldhouse record set last season, but they also earned a provisional qualifying time for the Indoor National Championships. Their time of 12:07.90 before track and altitude adjustment will rank them near the top in the nation. Their adjusted time is 11:52.92 The men's team of Ryan Miles, Chris Fitzpatrick, Larry McDaris and Joel Hamilton also broke the fieldhouse record with a time of 10:10.83. Their time also is a provisonal qualifying time for the Indoor Championships and will rank them in the top five in the nation, their adjusted time comes out to be 9:57.17 Sprinter Michael Curl also found his way into Mines' records book by breaking the school record in the men's 60 meter dash. His time of 6.9547 is the new school record and earned him a third place finish Mines will be split in two this weekend as some will compete in the Colorado Mines Twilight Meet and others compete in Lincoln, Nebraska in the Praire Wolf Invitational. CSM Track and Field Team Competes at The University of New Mexico Albuquerque, N.M. - The Colorado School of Mines track and field team competed amongst some of the toughest Division I and II school this Saturday at The University of New Mexico Invitational. Mines had five individuals run nationally qualifying marks this weekend at the meet. Heather Beresford and Joel Hamilton highlighted the teams performances with individual victories along with provisional qualifying marks in their events. Senior Heather Beresford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) was second overall and first for Division II schools in the women's mile run. Her time of 4:52.66 was less than four seconds behind Division I winner Diana Chelimo. Beresford finished second at last years Division II Indoor National Championships in the mile, with a time this early in the season, it looks as if Beresford will be back to compete for the national title this March. Her time of 4:52.66 ranks her number one on the Division II national list so far. Also running a provisional qualifying time in the women's mile was junior Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West). Peddles time of 5:04.50 puts her on the qualifying list and earned her an eighth place finish. For the men, Joel Hamilton finished first for all Division I and II schools in the men's 5000 meter run. His time of 15:04.86 was 15 seconds faster than second place, Western State runner Nick Hirsch. It was also good enough to break Mines' school record and was a provisional qualifying time for the Indoor National Championships. His time after the altitude adjustment was 14:41.63, which is the time that will be on the national qualifying list. Also running provisional qualifying times in the men's mile were Ryan Miles (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) and Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer). Both Miles and McDaris qualified the previous week in the mile, but were able to improve their times this past weekend at New Mexico. Miles improved his time from 4:13.40 to 4:11.26 while McDaris improved from a 4:13.76 to 4:11.79. Mines will return to action in two weeks when they host the CSM All-Comers meet on February 11. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM TRACK AND FIELD HOSTS JOE DAVIES OPEN GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines track and field team got their indoor season started by hostin the annual Joe Davies Open Saturday afternoon. The meet was the biggest ever as five Division II schools competed and two Division I schools, along with unattached athletes. The meet was a combined score of both men and womens team scores. Winning the meet with a combined team score of 287 was Western State College while Chadron State was second with 229, Adams State third 224, Mines finished fourth with 156 points and The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs finished fifth with 14. The University of Colorado and Colorado State University were the two Division I teams there and were scored seperately from Division II. The Orediggers had two athletes provisionally qualify for the Division II Indoor National Championships on Saturday. Distance runners, Ryan Miles (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) and Larry McDaris (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) both ran provisional times in the Men's Mile event. Miles time of 4:13.40 was good enough to win the even wile McDaris finished second in a time of 4:13.76. The women were led by a one through three performance in the 800 meter dash. Heather Beresford (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) won the race with a time of 2:17.71, while teammates Melanie Peddle (Greeley, Colo./Greeley West) finished second in a time of 2:18.71 and Serena Gardiner (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth) in third with a 2:22.73. The women's 4x400 meter relay team composed of these three runners plus Hanna Davey (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) also captured a victory. With a time of 4:06.29 Mines finished first in front of Western State's team.
