SHELLY JOHNSON
HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH
2007 will be Shelly Johnson's fifth season as the head
volleyball coach at Colorado School of Mines. Johnson is the fourth
volleyball coach in the history of the program.
Last fall, the Orediggers had three player earn recognition on the All-RMAC
teams. Amanda Rebol was named First Team All-RMAC, Nicole Leeper was
a Second Team All-RMAC selection and Kaity Edmiston garnered Honorable
Mention All-RMAC laurels. Rebol's 2006 achievements also included recognition
on the ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-District VII
squad by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
In 2005, Johnson led CSM volleyball to its best season
ever as the squad won a program-record 20 matches. Colorado School of
Mines qualified for the RMAC Tournament for the first time since 1997
and defeated Mesa State in the quarterfinals before enduring a five-game
setback to Metro State in the semifinals. In addition, the 2005 Orediggers
earned their first-ever berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament, falling
in the opening round to eventual national runner-up, Nebraska - Kearney.
Three Orediggers earned All-RMAC honors in 2005, including Rebol, who
was a unanimous First Team selection, and Ashley Pagel, who garnered
Second Team All-RMAC accolades. Sarah Alsbrooks, an Honorable Mention
All-RMAC pick, was named Second Team All-Region and also garnered ESPN
The Magazine First Team Academic All-District VII recognition.
In her first year at the helm (2003), Johnson led CSM to an 11-16 mark,
including a 7-12 record in the RMAC. It was a ten-game improvement over
the 2002 season, and the Orediggers missed out on the RMAC Tournament
by just two matches.
Johnson came to CSM after spending three seasons as an assistant volleyball
coach at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Johnson, who has been
the Director of the USA Volleyball Sanctioned Junior Olympics Pick Six
Volleyball Club since 1997, has also served as the head coach at Carl
Sandburg College (Galesburg, Illinois), as well as an assistant coach
at Galesburg High School.
During her time at Wayne State, Johnson helped lead the team to an overall
record of 63-40 and the 2001 NSIC Championship. She served as a recruiter
of high school and junior college athletes, assisted in conducting practices
and was responsible for helping the team maintain a cumulative grade
point average of 3.5 over her last four semesters at Wayne State.
As a player for the Wildcats, Johnson was an NAIA All-America pick in
1990. Johnson, a four-year letterwinner at Wayne State (1988-91), currently
holds eight Wildcat records. Johnson earned her undergraduate degree
in Business Administration in 1991 and earned her M.S. in Education
from Wayne State in 2004.
