GREG CHIRIELEISON CLAIMS EIGHTH AT NATIONALS
TO EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS

WHEELING, W.V. - Colorado Mines senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) earned All-America honors with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Wheeling Civic Center.

Chirieleison is the first Mines wrestler to garner All-America accolades since 184-pounder John Simpson won the National Championship in 1998.

Chirieleison opened the championships by going 2-1 on Friday and fell into the consolation round with his loss. On Saturday, he lost 7-3 to Jared Deaguero of Northern Colorado to move into the seventh place match. There, he was knocked off by Riley Ross of Nebraska-Kearney, 3-2.

Chirieleison finished the championships with an overall record of 2-3. Other CSM national qualifiers were senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) who went 1-2 and senior heavyweight Chuck Halstead (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) who posted an 0-2 mark. As a team, Mines placed 30th with four team points.

The NCAA Division II National Championships concluded the 2002-03 season for Colorado Mines.

CHIRIELEISON STILL ALIVE AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS; DUBROVICH AND HALSTEAD ELIMINATED FROM COMPETITION

WHEELING, W.V. - Three members from the Colorado Mines wrestling squad opened competition at the NCAA Division II National Championships on Friday. The championships are being held at the Wheeling Civic Center as West Liberty College is hosting this year’s competition.

Competing for Mines is senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) and senior heavyweight Chuck Halstead (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak).

Chirieleison is the only CSM wrestler still alive after the first day of competition. He opened the championships with a 5-0 win over Matt Neumiller of St. Cloud State. Chirieleison then lost in the second round to Lucas Mackesey of Findlay, 2-1, in a tiebreaker to fall into the consolation round. In his first match in the consolation round, Chirieleison knocked off Josh McDonald of San Francisco State, 8-3. He is now scheduled to face Jared Deaguero of Northern Colorado on Saturday morning.

Dubrovich posted a 1-2 mark on Friday. He began with a 2-1 tiebreaker loss to John Burda of Pittsburgh-Johnstown to fall into the consolation round. Dubrovich won his first consolation match, 7-4, over Ryan Kopiaz of Minnesota State-Manketo and then lost, 5-3, to Sam Kenton of Augustana to be eliminated from the championships.

Halstead lost his opening round match, 6-1, to Baron Blanchard of Northern State and then dropped a 3-2 decision to Aldo Campea of Augustana to be eliminated from his weight class.

The NCAA Division II National Championships will conclude on Saturday. The opening session is slated to begin at 11:00 am EST and the finals are scheduled for 7:30 pm EST.

COLORADO MINES QUALIFIES THREE FOR NATIONALS


Senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison captured the RMAC Championship on Sunday by going 3-0 in his weight class

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Colorado School of Mines senior Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling championship at 165 pounds as the Oredigger grapplers competed at the RMAC/West Regional Championships at San Francisco State on Sunday.

Chirieleison, along with senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) and senior heaveyweight Chuck Halstead (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak), all qualified for the NCAA Championships by virtue of their top-four finishes at the conference championships.

In the team competition, Mines placed fifth of eight teams in the West Region with 66.5 points and sixth of seven teams in the RMAC race with 68.5 points.

The top-seeded Chirieleison began his title run with an 18-5 major decision over Dan Roesch of Western State. He then knocked off fourth-seeded Jordan Johnson of Chadron State, 4-1, in the semifinals before taking care of third-seeded Riley Ross of Nebraska-Kearney, 4-2, in the finals.

Dubrovich, the tournament’s third seed, opened with a 12-4 win over Casey Woodall of Adams State. He then handed second-seeded Jordan Nichols of Fort Hays State a 2-1 setback in the semifinals before falling to top-seeded Maurico Wright of San Francisco State, 7-4, in the finals. Wright, the defending national champion at 184 pounds, also broke Dubrovich’s 17-match win streak.

The third-seeded Halstead won his first match, 8-2, over Luke Roberts of Central Washington before losing to Andrew Ubben of Fort Hays State, 3-2, in the semifinals. However, Halstead rallied to win two straight matches in the consolation round to take third place and earn a spot in the national championships.

Sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) just missed qualifying for nationals as he placed fifth in his weight class. Jenson went 2-3 in his bracket with both wins coming via pins.

The meet concluded the 2002-03 season for Mines as a team. Chirieleison, Dubrovich and Halstead will wrestle at the NCAA Championships on March 14-15. to be contested at West Liberty State College in West Liberty, W.V.

OREDIGGER GRAPPLERS DEFEAT CHADRON STATE, 21-15

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado Mines wrestling team won seven of ten matches and claimed a 21-15 victory over Chadron State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual Wednesday evening in Volk Gymnasium.

Mines (2-10, 2-4 RMAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after a 1-0 win at 125 pounds by sophomore Jesse Blattner (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) and a 9-8 double overtime triumph by senior Dustin Bennetts (Buena Vista, Colo./Buena Vista). Blattner earned his point via riding time, while Bennetts used an escape nine seconds into the second over time to earn his win.

Chadron State (4-6, 2-3 RMAC) knotted the match at 6-6 after it received a fall (2:05) from redshirt freshman Ryan Hoffman at 141 pounds. The teams exchanged victories to again knot the dual at 9-9 midway through as CSM junior 149 pounder Nathan Peterson (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood) registered a 3-2 decision, while Eagle junior Travis Peak recorded a 5-1 win at 157 pounds.

From there, Mines would win four of the next five matches to seal the win. Senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) tallied an 11-5 win and was followed by junior Jeremy Pollock’s (Cody, Wyo./Cody) 9-6 victory. Oredigger senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) then extended his unbeaten streak to 15 consecutive matches with a 4-0 win.

Chadron State junior Jeff Rusher picked up a forfeit win at 197 pounds and Mines senior heavyweight Chuck Halstead (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) finished the dual with a 3-2 victory.

Both Mines and Chadron will be out of action until March 2 when they compete at the RMAC/West Regional Championships at San Francisco State University.

MINES WRESTLING EARNS FIRST WIN, 31-13, OVER WESTERN STATE

GUNNISON, Colo. - The Colorado Mines wrestling team earned its first victory of the season with a 31-13 triumph over Western State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual at Wright Gym Thursday evening.

CSM senior 133-pounder Dustin Bennetts (Buena Vista, Colo./Buena Vista) opened the dual with a 5-2 decision. Western's R.C. LaHayne then knotted the dual at 3-3 as he tallied a 6-5 win over Mines senior Lincoln Thomas (Anchorage, Alaska/Service) at 141 pounds.

From there, CSM would win the next five matches to take a commanding 25-3 lead before settling for the 17 point win. Junior 149-pounder Nathan Peterson (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood) picked up a 19-1 win and was followed by sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) who earned a fall (4:35) over Dirk Sisneros to extend the lead to 14-3.

Senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) followed with a 12-4 major decision and then junior 174-pounder Jeremy Pollock (Cody, Wyo./Cody) earned his 10th victory of the season with a 9-4 decision.

Senio 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) concluded the run with a 9-0 victory. Dubrovivh has now tallied 14 consecutive wins dating to his last loss on Jan. 9. Senior heavyweight Chuck Halstead (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) scored a forfeit for the Orediggers last win.

CSM will conclude its regular season dual schedule when it hosts Chadron State at 7:00 pm next Wednesday in Volk Gymnasium.

MINES WRESTLING FALLS TO ADAMS STATE, 29-10

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Colorado Mines wrestling team dropped a 29-10 decision to 14th-ranked Adams State at Plachy Hall Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Three Oredigger grapplers earned wins, including senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) who earned a 16-2 major decision.

Mines will next be in action on Thursday when it travels to Western State for a 7:00 pm dual.

CSM WRESTLING FALLS TO AUGUSTANA, 24-10

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Colorado Mines wrestling squad dropped a 24-10 decision to Augustana in a non-conference dual on Thursday night in Volk Gymnasium.

Augustana, ranked sixth in the nation, raced out to a 9-0 lead behind wins by Cris Bietz at heavyweight, eighth-ranked Aaron Graumann at 125-pounds and Andre VanderVelde at 133-pounds.

But the Orediggers responded with wins in two of the next three matches to cut the lead to 12-7. Mines senior 141-pounder Lincoln Thomas (Anchorage, Alaska/Service) upset sixth-ranked Ryan King, 14-6, while sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) earned a 7-2 victory over Matt McDougall.

However, Dusty Wilking picked up a fall (6:04) at 165 pounds and Tom Meester, the top ranked wrestler in Division II at 174 pounds, registered an 8-5 win to push the Viking lead to 21-7.

Mines senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) closed out the night for the Orediggers with a 5-2 triumph over fifth-ranked Sam Kenton of Augustana. Dubrovich has now rattled off 12 straight victories, including a pair of tournament titles and leads Mines with an overall record of 27-6.

CSM will be back in action Saturday night when it travels to Alamosa, Colo., for Rocky Mountain Athletic dual with 14th-ranked Adams State. The dual is slated to begin at 7:00 pm.

MINES WRESTLING FALLS TO TOP-RANKED NEBRASKA-KEARNEY, 28-15

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado Mines wrestling team won five matches, but Nebraska-Kearney, the top-ranked team in Division II, used four pins to pull out a 28-15 win in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Friday night in Volk Gymnasium.

Mines raced out to a 9-6 lead after four matches as senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) started the match with a 10-3 win over Curtis Brown. Following a pin by UNK’s Jeff Sylvester at 197 pounds, Mines senior heavyweight Chuck Halstead (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) tied the score at 6-6 with a 7-4 victory over seventh-ranked Bob Murphy.

Mines sophomore Jesse Blattner (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) gave the Orediggers their final lead of the night (9-6) with a 5-4 victory over fifth-ranked Bryce Abbey. However, the Lopers (9-1, 3-0 RMAC) used three straight wins, including two by pins, to claim a 22-9 advantage after seven matches.

Mines cut the lead to 22-15 as sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) earned a 13-7 win, while senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) claimed a 2-1 win over eighth-ranked Riley Ross for CSMs last victory.

CSM (0-7, 0-3) will be back in action on Saturday night when it travels to 16th-ranked Northern Colorado for a match at 7:00 pm.

MINES WRESTLING PLACES FOURTH AT COLORADO COLLEGIATES

GREELEY, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team placed fourth of seven teams at the Colorado Collegiate Championships contested at Northern Colorado on Saturday. Mines had one champion, one runner-up and two third place finishers.

Northern Colorado won the team title with 108.5 points and was followed by Air Force (94.5), Adams State (72), Colorado Mines (49.5), Western State (44.5), The Thunderwolves Wrestling Club (2.5) and CU Wrestling Club (0).

CSM senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) was the squads lone champion as he went 3-0 to win his bracket. The top-seeded Dubrovich began his run with a 16-5 win over Casey Woodall of Adams State. He then defeated Brendon McLeon of Air Force, 11-0, in the semifinals before knocking off Northern Colorado’s Cole Allison in the finals, 7-2.

Senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) tallied a second place showing in his bracket by going 2-1 on the afternoon. The number three seed, Chirieleison opened the tournament with a pin in 2:00 over Scott Cleve of Adams State and then knocked off second-seeded Blaine Brown of Air Force, 10-8, in the semifinals.

Sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) posted a 4-1 mark with two pins to register a third place showing in his bracket, while senior heavyweight Chuck Halstead (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) went 2-1 to earn third place.

Colorado Mines will next be in action on Friday night when it hosts Nebraska-Kearney for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match. The Lopers entered the week as the No. 1 ranked team in Division II.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling squad dropped three matches at the Wyoming Duals on Saturday. Mines opened with a 39-4 loss to Montana State Northern and followed it with a 33-6 setback to Wyoming. The Orediggers concluded the day with a 26-13 loss to Northwest College.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling squad dropped eight of ten matches during a 31-6 dual meet loss at the Air Force Academy on Friday night. Senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) were the lone Oredigger grapplers to earn wins.

MINES WRESTLING COMPETES AT TRACY BORAH INVITATIONAL

GUNNISON, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team placed third of seven teams at the Tracy Borah Invitational on Saturday with 64 points as it had five place winners in the tournament.

Central Washington won the event with 83 points and was followed by Northwest College (80), Colorado Mines, Fort Hays (60), Air Force Academy (46.5), Western State (42.5) and Western Wyoming (33).

Senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) was the Oredigger's lone champion as he won his bracket. He opened the tournament with his first pin of the season in 2:24 over Tom Beachkofsky of the Air Force Academy. Dubrovich then knocked off Carson Kleinfeldt of Northwest College, 8-2, in the semifinals, before defeating Steve Hadsel of Central Washington in the finals.

Senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) claimed second place in his bracket, while, sophomore 149-pounder Brian Kinsella (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch), sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) and senior heavyweight Chuck Halstead (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River) all captured third place in their respective weight classes. Junior 174-pounder Jeremy Pollock (Cody, Wyo./Cody) was the Oredigger's final place winner as he registered a fourth place showing.

Mines will next be in action on Friday night when it competes at the Air Force Academy.

CSM WRESTLING FALLS TO FORT HAYS STATE, 27-14

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling squad dropped a 27-14 decision to Fort Hays State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Thursday evening in Volk Gymnasium.

Fort Hays (2-0, 1-0 RMAC) jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two matches as Brian King picked up a forfeit win at 197 pounds and Andew Ubben earned a 4-0 victory at heavyweight. However, Mines responded by winning the next three matches to knot the overall score at 9-9 midway through.

Sophomore 125-pounder Jesse Blattner (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) started the rally with an 8-5 victory and he was followed by sophomore Stephen Lopez (Aurora, Colo./Eagle Crest) who tallied an 11-5 win at 133 pounds. Blattner, who trailed 4-3 heading into the third period, picked up five points in the final period to earn the win, while Lopez tallied six points in the final stanza to earn his win. Senior 141-pounder Lincoln Thomas (Anchorage, Alaska/Service) finished the CSM rally with a 9-3 triumph.

But the Tigers would run off consecutive victories to take a 19-9 lead after seven matches. Justin Speakman registered a pin in 6:49 at 149 pounds, while Brandon Jobe picked up a 17-4 major decision for Fort Hays.

Mines senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) sliced the deficit to 19-14 with a 17-2 technical fall, but the Tigers picked up wins in the final two matches to conclude the scoring.

The Orediggers (0-2, 0-2 RMAC) will return to action on Saturday when they compete at the Tracy Borah Invitational in Gunnison, Colo.

MINES WRESTLING COMPETES AT DANA OPEN

BLAIR, Neb. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team was in action on Saturday afternoon at the Dana Open and senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) was the Orediggers lone place winner as he tallied a second place showing.

Dubrovich opened the meet with three straight wins before falling to Mike Lester in the finals, 9-2. Dubrovich’s victories came by counts of 10-2, 9-2, and 15-3.

Junior 149-pounder Nathan Peterson (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood) had a solid showing as he won two matches before falling in the quarterfinals of his bracket, 1-0. Junior 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) won two matches in his class to advance to the semifinals where he fell, 17-7. Both Peterson and Jenson then lost their first matches in the consolation round.

Mines will return to action on Thursday evening when it hosts Fort Hays State at 7:00 pm in Volk Gymnasium in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match. It will be the home opener for CSM.

CSM WRESTLING COMPETES AT CLIFF KEEN INVITE

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team competed at the Cliff Keen Invite over the weekend. The field consisted of top-level Division I teams, including Minnesota, which won the team title with 131 points. Illinois placed second with 123.5, while Ohio State claimed third place with 118.5 points.

CSM senior Greg Chiereileson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) had the most success of any Oredigger grappler as he placed eighth at 165 pounds when he lost in overtime, 6-4, to Shawn Silvis of Central Oklahoma. Chiereilson opened the competition with an 18-4 major decision over Bryan Busby of Cal-State Bakersfield before being pinned by John Clark of Ohio State in the round of 16. Chiereileson came back to post three straight wins over wrestlers from North Idaho, North Carolina State and Fresno State before falling to Levi Prevost of Wyoming to fall into the seventh place match.

Mines senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) also fared well at the Invite as he posted a 5-2 mark. Included in his showing were victories over wrestlers from North Carolina State, Virginia Tech and Brown.

Sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) tallied a 2-2 mark in the tournament, including a pin in 2:49 over Tom Garcia of Northwestern. In addition, sophomore Curtis Ridenour (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) also registered a 2-2 mark in his first action of the season.

The Orediggers wrestling team will be back in action on Jan. 4 when it competes at the Dana Open in Blair, Neb.

MINES WRESTLING FALLS TO SAN FRANCISCO STATE, 21-12

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team opened its RMAC schedule with a 21-12 setback to sixth-ranked San Francisco State on Thursday evening. Earning wins for the Oredigger's were junior 149-pounder Nate Peterson (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood), sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart), senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and freshman heavyweight Derek Thompson (Dolores, Colo./Dolores).

MINES WRESTLING COMPETES AT NORTHERN COLORADO OPEN

GREELEY, Colo. -- Colorado School of Mines senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) earned his second consecutive title as the Oredigger wrestling squad competed at the Northern Colorado Open on Sunday.

Dubrovich, who last week claimed the 184-pound weight class at the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming, posted a 4-0 record en route to winning the tournament title. He outscored his four opponents a combined, 39-12, and did not give up a takedown in the entire tournament. Dubrovich defeated Tanner Linsacum of Northern Colorado, 14-5, in the championship match.

Freshman David Lee (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman) tallied a third place showing in the 125-pound bracket as he posted a 6-1 mark, including a 7-4 win over Kyle Kostur of Northern Colorado in the third place match. Sophomore Stephen Lopez (Aurora, Colo./Eagle Crest) also had a solid showing as he placed fourth at 133 pounds going 4-2 on the day.

Junior 149-pounder Nathan Peterson (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood) advanced to the semifinals of his weight class before losing and dropping to the consolation bracket. However, he rebounded to win a pair of matches and claim third place. Peterson went 4-1 for the day.

At 157 pounds, sophomore Peter Jenson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart) tallied a 4-2 mark en route to a fourth place finish. Jenson won all four of his matches by pinning his opponents in a combined time of 9:44 and his two losses were by two points each.

Senior Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) notched a third place showing at 165 pounds as he posted a 4-1 mark for the tournament. Chirieleison, who was defeated 6-5 in the semifinals, came back to win two matches in the consolation bracket, including one by a pin in 1:59 and a 12-4 decision in the third place match. Freshman Derek Thompson (Dolores, Colo./Dolores) placed fourth in the heavyweight bracket by posting a 2-2 mark.

The Orediggers wrestling team will be back in action on Dec. 5 when they take on San Francisco State in Las Vegas, Nev. It will be the first RMAC match for Mines.

MINES WRESTLING OPENS SEASON AT COWBOY OPEN

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The Colorado School of Mines wrestling squad opened its 2002-03 season by competing at the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming’s War Memorial Fieldhouse on Sunday.

Senior 184-pounder Mark Dubrovich (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) paced Mines as he claimed the championship in his junior/senior bracket by going 3-0. Dubrovich opened his title run with a 4-1 decision over Lucas Lefever of the Air Force Academy and then advanced to the finals with a 5-0 victory over Ben Holscher of Chadron State. In the finals, the two-time national qualifier knocked off Josh McCrary of the Air Force Academy, 9-5.

Junior 149-pounder Nate Peterson (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood) registered a 2-2 mark in his bracket. After winning his first two matches, including a pin in the second round, Peterson just missed advancing to the semifinals as he fell to Thad Trujillo of Wyoming, 5-3, in the quarterfinals.

Senior 165-pounder Greg Chirieleison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) also had a solid showing at the event as he went 3-2 in his bracket. He opened the tournament with a pin in 2:26 in his opening match. Chirieleison also recorded a major decision (9-0) and a 6-3 victory on the day.

In the freshman/sophomore division, CSM freshman Nate Pilcher (Fort Morgan, Colo./Fort Morgan) tallied the best showing by an Oredigger as he claimed third place at 141 pounds with a record of 4-1. He earned two straight victories before falling in the semifinals, 12-8. However, Pilcher rebounded to post a pair of victories in the consolation bracket to earn third place.

The Orediggers wrestling team will be back in action on Sunday when it competes at the Northern Colorado Open. Action is slated to begin at 9:00 am in Greeley, Colo.
