GUNNISON, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team was in action on Saturday at the 2006 RMAC/NCAA II West Regional Championships at Western State College.
The Orediggers placed seventh overall with 39.5 points.
Leading the way was junior 157-pounder Nathan Pilcher (Fort Morgan, Colo./Fort Morgan) freshman 197-pounder Patrick Ryan (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola) who each placed fifth overall and just missed out by one spot on qualifying for the NCAA II National Championships.
Ryan won the fifth place match over Jon Westerby of Chadron State with a fall at 4:59. Pilcher opened the tournament with an 8-1 victory over Kirk Fitzpatrick of San Francisco State, but fell in the second round to David Nordheus of Fort Hays State, 3-1. Nordheus is the No. 1 ranked 157-pounder in Division II.
CSM also had four grapplers place sixth overall in junior 133-pounder Garrett Eller (Kremmling, Colo./West Grand), freshman 149-pounder Corey Swanson (Fort Lupton, Colo./Fort Lupton), junior 165-pounder Anthony Alfini (Rifle, Colo./Rifle) and senior 174-pounder Andy Lee (Boise, Idaho/Borah).
The tournament concludes the 2005-06 season for Colorado School of Mines.

CSM placed fifth overall as senior 125-pounder Jesse Blattner (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) was the lone Oredigger to place as he was third overall.
Junior 157-pounder Nathan Pilcher (Fort Morgan, Colo./Fort Morgan) fared well as he posted a 2-2 mark with one fall.
CSM will return to action on Friday night when it travels to Fort Hays State for a 7:00 pm match.

CSM WRESTLING COMPETES AT TRACY BORAH INVITATIONAL
GUNNISON, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team returned to action after its holiday break on Saturday at the Tracy Borah Invitational hosted by Western State College. The Orediggers had three placewinners as the team scored 21 points to tie for fifth place overall.
Leading the way was freshman 197-pounder Patrick Ryan (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola) who finished second in his weight class as he fell to Cody Mumma of Western State in the finals.
Senior 125-pounder Jesse Blattner (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) and junior 133-pounder Garrett Eller (Kremmling, Colo./West Grand) both finished in third place. Blattner won his consolation final match over Tito Garcia of Pima JC, 7-5 in a sudden victory, while Eller picked up a 5-2 win over Franky Villeascusa of Embry-Riddle in the consolation championship.
CSM is slated to return to action on Jan. 13 when it travels to New Mexico Highlands for a dual match at 7:00 pm.

HAYS, Kan. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team was in action on Saturday at the 2005 Fort Hays State University/Bob Smith Open.
Junior 133-pounder Garrett Eller (Kremmling, Colo./West Grand) and freshman 197-pounder Patrick Ryan (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola) fared the best for CSM as each went 2-2 in the open event with one fall apiece.
CSM will return to action with two matches this week. On Wednesday, CSM will travel to Chadron State for a 7:00 pm RMAC dual and on Friday, the Orediggers will host Air Force at 7:00 pm in Volk Gym.

CSM WRESTLING COMPETES AT NORTHERN COLORADO OPEN
GREELEY, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team was in action on Saturday at the Old Chicago/Northern Colorado Open.
Although no CSM grapplers placed in the top-four, several turned in outstanding performances. Leading the way for the Orediggers were senior 125-pounder Jesse Blattner (Golden, Colo./Green Mountain) and freshman 141-pounder Corey Swanson (Fort Lupton, Colo./Fort Lupton). Each turned in a 3-2 performance with one fall. For Blattner, it was his third fall in as many days after he went 3-0 with two pins at Friday's CSM/Jack Hancock Dual Invitational.
CSM will return to action on Dec. 7 when it travels to Chadron State for an RMAC dual. The match is slated for 7:00 pm.

CSM WRESTLING OPENS SEASON AT WYOMING COWBOY OPEN
LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Colorado School of Mines wrestling team opened the 2005-06 season on Sunday at the Wyoming Cowboy Open in War Memorial Fieldhouse.
Several Orediggers competed in the Open Division, while a handful also grappled in the 20 & Under Division. A total of 19 CSM wrestlers competed in the event.
Freshman 141-pounder Cody Weitzel (Fort Morgan, Colo./Fort Morgan) had the best day by a CSM grappler as he posted a 3-2 mark. After losing his first match, Weitzel came back to win three straight to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket before falling to Jacob Sheridan of Adams State.
CSM will return to action on Friday when it hosts the Jack Hancock Invitational in Steinhauer Fieldhouse. The Orediggers will wrestle Montana State-Northern at 2:00 pm, Western State at 4:00 pm and Kutztown at 6:00 pm
