ABOUT THE COLORADO MINES WRESTLING PROGRAM
Thank you for visit the Colorado School of Mines Wrestling
Website. We have
a rich tradition of excellence here that has been carried throughout the
world on the shoulders of eight NCAA Champions, 42 All-Americans and the
outstanding wrestler of the 1993 NCAA Championships. These wrestlers
created a legacy of Mines wrestling upon which we continue to build. Our
motto: "Experience Tradition. Anticipate Change. Pursue Excellence,"
reminds
us that our program, which is entering its 84th season, is a living reality,
and the horizons of opportunity are as wide as the world upon which Mines
graduates have made their marks.
As a part of this rich tradition, Mines wrestlers bring
passion, intensity
and diligence to their performance on and off the mat. These
characteristics separate the elite wrestlers from the average wrestlers
at
every level of the sport. However, survival here is not a matter of doing
well, but rather a pursuit of excellence driven by passion and enthusiasm.
Our competition here is rigorous, because the Rocky Mountain
Athletic
Conference is the toughest NCAA Division II conference in the country.
Furthermore, we compete regularly against NCAA Division I and II, NAIA,
and
junior college programs. Our team travels throughout the Rocky Mountain
region and into the Midwest with occasional forays to the east and west
coast. Some of our more exciting trips of this past season were to the
Las
Vegas Invitational, San Francisco, and West Virginia.
As exciting as our wrestling program tends to be, a wrestler's
athletic
career is overshadowed by the success he achieves upon graduation. Our
wrestling alumni are found throughout the world as managers, administrators,
and professionals in the prestigious fields related to engineering,
computers and science. These professions compensate extremely well with
the
average starting salary of recent Mines graduates in the $50,000 range.
Even in a competitive job market, Mines wrestlers have
the advantage for
three distinct reasons. First, by the time they graduate, their work ethic
has been on public display for the previous four or five years. Employers
come to expect more from a Mines wrestler. Secondly, our wrestlers develop
a network of contacts in their respective fields during their athletic
careers here. Alumni are watching and frequently contact our athletic
office to discuss upcoming graduates. Finally, our wrestlers demonstrate
their commitment to be on a winning team by repeatedly earning the NCAA
Academic National Championship team award, which goes to the college program
with the highest average GPA. Mines has nabbed this award 4 out of the
last
8 years.
Whether on the mat or off the mat Mines is the right choice
and the right
place. I hope you can see how excited I am to be a part of this program.
