There are multiple options available with Windows95/98 DUN--this guide will show you a proven and reliable method for connecting to the CSM network via a modem on Windows 95/98. These instructions assume that your hardware is functioning properly. Consult Windows 95/98 help (go to Start®Help), manuals or technical support available to you (e.g., from your PC hardware vendor or your ISP) for information not covered in this guide.
If you are already using an ISP and want to connect to the CSM network via a DUN session as well, without altering your existing ISP DUN settings, follow the instructions at the end of this guide.
Go to Start
® Settings® Control Panel® and double-click the Network iconThe only items that need to be in the network list are "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP
® Dial-Up Adapter" (anything else, if present, can be removed)Highlight "TCP/IP
® Dial-Up Adapter" and choose "Properties"--there are 6 tabs:Host = [your user name] (e.g., "jsmith")--do NOT enter the quotation marks
Choose "OK" to save changes on "TCP/IP Properties" and then choose "OK" again on the network panel. You will be asked to reboot your PC--say "yes" to reboot.
Open the "Dial-Up Networking" folder (either from Start
® Programs® Accessories or via the "My Computer" icon on the desktop). If the "Dial-Up Networking folder is not found in the "My Computer" area, it hasn't been installed on your computer. To install dial-up networking, go to Start® Settings® Control Panel® Add/Remove Programs® "Windows Setup" tab® "Communications" line. Double-click the "Communications" line and make sure that "Dial-Up Networking" has a check mark next to it. You may be prompted for your Windows 95/98 CD-ROM after you say OK to everything. If so, just insert it in your CD-ROM drive when prompted, the necessary files will be installed, and you can continue with the steps below.Double-click the "Make New Connection" icon:
Under the "General" tab ensure that your modem is using the correct Port, the speaker volume is set at an appropriate level and the "Maximum speed" is set to "115200" (however, do NOT choose the option "Only connect at this speed")
You can ignore the "Connection" tab--the default settings should be fine
IMPORTANT: Select the "Options" tab and check the box for "Bring up terminal window after dialing"
Open the "Dial-Up Networking" folder (either from Start
® Programs® Accessories or via the "My Computer" icon on the desktop) and highlight the "CSM 56K" dial-up networking icon then right-click on it and choose "Properties." Choose the "Server Type" button and uncheck (i.e., deselect - make the box white) the "log on to network" box. You should also uncheck the "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX Compatible" boxes. Otherwise, the defaults shown should be fine. Choose "OK" to save changes. Now double-click your "CSM 56K" dial-up networking icon to bring up the connection dialog. Do NOT enter your User name and Password at the "Connect To" window prompt! Choose the "Connect" button
Your modem will connect with a CSM modem, then a terminal window should open up prompting you to enter your Slate userid (press Enter) and password (press Enter) (be patient--the prompt may take a few seconds to appear). (DO NOT use your mouse for the process described in this paragraph-use the Enter key after each entry.) A terminal server prompt should appear ("kato"). At the terminal server prompt, you should type "ppp" --lots of what appears to be gibberish will scroll by--at this point you can press the F7 or "Continue" button at the bottom of the terminal window.
A box will pop up providing you with information on your connection and its speed. You can leave that box where it appears thoughout your session or you can minimize the box and place it on the taskbar. DO NOT close this box until you are ready to disconnect (ending your session). Once your connection is established with the settings given above, you will then be connected to the Internet via a PPP connection (meaning you can run TCP/IP applications such as ftp, telnet, web browsers, etc.) Keep in mind that the new modems provide 56 K capability. There are many factors that will vary the actual connection speed.
If you are having problems connecting with a DUN session you have defined and tried to modify, you should delete the DUN session that isn't working and start over at the beginning of this guide. That way, you can define a new DUN session and you will be working with a known set of defaults.
