Software: Introduction

The CSM user community has access to a wealth of software in support of our academic mission.  Individual academic departments and research centers and institutes maintain labs with specialized software for use by people associated with that department or center.  Academic Computing and Networking (AC&N) maintains computer labs and remotely accessible computing resources with both general purpose and specialized software available to the campus at large -- see the Facilities and Resources page for comprehensive details and locations of labs.

Most of the software supported by AC&N or installed in labs is not available to the general campus community, but some of the software we have obtained is available for installation and use on machines other than ours for low or no cost.   A general rule to follow regarding the various product would be that if AC&N doesn't specifically document that the product is available for general use, it likely isn't.

Licensing restrictions vary by product.  One typical restriction is that the licensed software only be installed on a campus-owned campus-located machine for use by the CSM community in support of instruction; under such a license the software would not be available for installation on personally owned machines, off campus machines or in support of commercial activities or funded research.  Some are more liberal; our AntiVirus software is available, without charge, to faculty, staff and students for home use and on personally owned machines.  Some licenses are more restrictive or may have a cost to the end-user attached to them.  Check the AC&N Software Index and Summaries web-site for the most recent information.  The brief summaries presented there are intended to be a concise outline of our understanding of the major points of our licenses and do not override the legal documents that are in place.

A good place to start when inquiring about installation of any CSM-owned software would be the AC&N Software Index and Summaries web-site.  AC&N manages many dozens of different software product and we are updating the Index as quickly as we can.  If the specific product that you are interested in is not yet listed in the Index, please let us know via the Mines Help Center; submitting a help desk request to summarize and index a given product will greatly aid us in prioritizing this project.
