PLACEMENT INFORMATION• • • [DIVISION
OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS]
Careers
in Economics Economics majors have a range
of options following their undergraduate studies. Some pursue graduate degrees
in economics, business, or law. Others begin careers as managers, economic advisors,
and financial officers in business or government, often in organizations that
deal with engineering, applied science, and advanced technology. Still others
start up their own businesses. Management Managers
oversee and lead people and operations in private and public organizations. Project
management, where experts from various fields work together as a team to complete
a specific job, is an example of this kind of work. Economic
Analysis and Advising Both private firms and government agencies
need economic analysis and advice. Economists in the private sector assess the
nature and extent of competition affecting their firms, forecast future developments
in the sector and the economy as a whole, and develop long-range, strategic plans
for their firms. Economists in the government sector evaluate possible changes
in public policy and advise legislators and other public officials. Western
Geophysical Financial Analysis
and Management Financial analysts and managers prepare budgets,
monitor cash and investments, and prepare financial reports. They often work in
interdisciplinary teams to assess the economic and financial viability of investment
projects and to raise money to finance these projects. In banks and other financial
institutions, financial officers evaluate projects, assess risks, make loan decisions,
and provide advice on mergers and acquisitions. Economics recent placement information.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Economics
is an undergraduate program designed for the student interested in applied economics.
It can be tailored towards interests in basic economics, technology, or global
business. The economics degree curriculum covers the economy as a whole. It gives
the student a general perspective on how the market is influenced by a collection
of companies by examining alternative market structures (e.g., monopoly vs. perfect
competition) and exploring how companies form policies in order to flourish in
the global economy. Students are required to take a general engineering core
consisting of three semesters of calculus, a semester of differential equations,
a semester of statistics and probability, two semesters of chemistry, and two
semesters of physics. In addition, core courses specific to the economics degree
are required including six fundamental economics courses-two each in microeconomics
and macroeconomics, one in econometrics, and one in engineering economics-along
with an operations research survey course. In addition, students take six elective
courses in economics or business. Oral and written communication skills are emphasized
throughout the coursework. After receiving their B.S. degree in Economics, students
are well prepared for careers in market analysis and forecasting, policy analysis,
financial planning, project evaluation, and portfolio management, as well as other
positions where critical thinking and analysis using technical and economic skills
are required.
