Fence Access for Wheelchairs

Client: Jeff Pagels, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

We have all come across fences used to contain domestic animals as we hike the trails of the United States. Most of us consider these barriers a minor inconvenience on our journey. For those in wheelchairs, however, this minor inconvenience becomes major and in several case - hike-ending. Jeff, a wheelchair climber who mastered Mt McKinley, requests teams to consider the challenge of fences and design a device to provide access through the fence. This project requires creativity and innovation. Various concepts expose students to gates, hinges, levers, lifts and ramps.
