The Campus Writing Program at the Colorado School of Mines is founded on the idea that when students have both a solid technical and scientific background and the ability to convey their ideas, they are ultimately in a better position to influence their career paths, their chosen fields, and their world with the full fruit of their talents.
The Campus Writing Program (CWP) is designed to help students improve their ability to meet the expectations for written communication in their careers both at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) and beyond. The communication skills students learn should foster the kind of critical thinking and desire for learning that will enable them to become more effective communicators and life-long learners. In focusing on this goal, we intend to foster students' ability to effectively communicate innovations and ideas that can make a difference in the lives of people and in the world.
The CWP is instrumental in addressing some of the key goals of this institution, including those stated in the "Mines Graduate Profile":
- Graduates must have the skills to communicate information, concepts and ideas effectively.
- Graduates must have the knowledge and skills to be able to recognize, define and solve problems by applying sound scientific and engineering principles.
- Graduates should possess the skills and attitudes which promote teamwork and cooperation and continue their own growth through life-long learning.
To achieve these aims, the CWP has several resources in place, including the LAIS Writing Center, Writing Across the Curriculum, and a First-Year Writing Initiative (Nature and Human Values).
