U.S. Government

Currently the Catalyst library catalog contains records for approximately 65% of the federal government publications collections at the Arthur Lakes Library. Therefore, this database should be used first to locate items in the government publications collections.

Since there are a lot of items not found in the Catalyst database, the Prospector Database, can be used in addition to the Catalyst database. Prospector contains contains records for U.S. Government publications from 1976 to the present distributed by the Government Printing Office to depository libraries. For a list of all of the publication series currently distributed through the Federal Depository Library Program, see List of Classes (Provided by the University of Denver).

An additional source may be used to locate government publications. Similar to the U.S. Government Publications database, GPO's Catalog of U.S. Government Publications has records for government publications distributed to depository libraries from January 1994. This database does allow one to locate depository libraries that have selected individual publications.

To locate most government publications before 1976, paper indexes typically must be consulted.

Technical Report Literature

The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) publishes many government scientific and technical reports that are not published by the Government Printing Office. To locate scientific and technical government publications not found in the databases listed above, a search in the NTIS database will be necessary. The Library provides access to the NTIS Bibliographic database from 1964 to the present available in via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Availability is limited to the Colorado School of Mines campus computer network only. The library also collected the paper version of the index, Government Reports Announcements Index, which ceased as of January 1997.

Colorado State Publications

Colorado state publications can be found in the Catalyst database and the Colorado State Publications database.

Other State Government Publications

The CSM Library has many publications published by state other than Colorado. These publications are found in the main collection and not within the Government Publications collection. International and Foreign Government Publications

The CSM Library is not a depository for international or foreign publications. Any international or foreign publications in the Library's collections will be located in the main collection and not in the Government Publications collection.
