| How to Find a Map | |
|
To find a map, always start your search with the
NARROWEST geographic focus; a search that is too geographically wide will yield
many irrelevant items. If you are looking for a map of
"North Table Mountain," begin your search with that term.
If that fails, expand to the next widest geographic term, in this case,
"Golden." If this proves unsuccessful, try "Jefferson
County." If that does not acquire requisite information,
use the search term "Denver Basin." If that search
doesn't produce the information you need, try
"Colorado." If you cannot find any items in
Catalyst, or if you find too many items (over
10,000), see a librarian for guidance. WARNING: as you widen the
geographic area of your search, the amount of detail that a particular
maps shows will decrease. The Library does NOT own maps of every
part of the world. More than 99.8% of the items in the Map Room are cataloged, and are available through the Library's online catalog Catalyst. The easiest way to search for a map is to do a COMBINATION search in Catalyst. Use the name of the place you are looking for, like "North Table Mountain" or "Gilpin County," and the words "map?". The "?" is the truncation character. This tells the system to search for all words that begin "map"-the words could be "map" or "maps". Doing a search of "Colorado" and "map?" is too broad; it will yield more than 10,000 items. By narrowing the geographic area of your search and using the "?" symbol, you will save time. It is also possible to browse Catalyst using call numbers. Each geographic area has a specific call number: Jefferson County, Colorado is "G4313 .J4". A list of these call numbers is located on here. Because many maps are part of a series or set, additional indexes may be needed to locate a specific sheet. These indexes are in the white binders near the Office in the Map Room. Additional information about the indexes may be found here. Catalyst indicates the location of the item within the Map Room. These MAP ROOM locations include: CD ROM, FICHE, FILE CABINETS, FLAT, OFFICE, OVERSIZE, REFERENCE, RESERVE, ROLLED, and STACKS. |
