FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What do I need to do to change my major to MACS?
A: You need to submit two forms, available from the Registrar's Office:
  • Declaration/Change of Major
  • Major Advisor Form
Have these forms signed by the appropriate parties (Advisor, Department Head), and submit them back at the Registrar's Office. You will need to see Jody Lowther, in CH 147, to have an Advisor assigned.

Q: For MACS majors, what are the requirements for the Technical Area of Special Interest?
A: You must take a sequence of 4 courses (12 credit hours) in a technical area to which you could apply mathematics or computer science, outside of the MACS department. In order to decide what courses are appropriate, work with the department in which you are planning to take the Technical Area of Special Interest in order to come up with a plan for those courses.

Q: I am a MACS major, and I want to get a minor in another department. Do I still need an Area of Special Interest?
A: Generally, your minor can be counted for both your Technical Area of Special Interest and for 2 of your Free Electives.

Q: What courses qualify as MACS Electives?
A: In general, MACS Electives should be 400-level MACS courses. In addition, students may be interested in taking some graduate level courses to satisfy these requirements. One exception is MACS 348. This courses is designed for non-MCS majors, and cannot be used as an MACS elective. For course descriptions of all undergraduate MACS courses, visit http://www.mines.edu/Academic/macs/Academic_Programs/coursedesc.shtml.

Q: What courses qualify as Free Electives?
A: In general, any course can qualify as a free elective. So, take something which interests you, in any department!

Q: How can I get my hold removed so that I can register for classes?
A: Each semester, the MCS department holds group advising sessions where you can get questions answered about your course of study. By coming to one of these sessions, your hold will be removed. If you are unable to attend a group advising session, contact your advisor to have the hold removed.

Q: What are the LAIS/EBGN H&SS Cluster courses?
A: Cluster courses are the liberal arts requirements for graduation from CSM. You should select a cluster area from the following:
  • Humanities (formerly Humankind & Values)
  • Public Policy (formerly Society & Decisions, Environment, Resources, Science, & Technology)
  • International Studies
You will take three courses from within a cluster area, one of which is at the 400-level. For more information on the available courses, go to http://www.mines.edu/academic/lais/courses/courses.html.

Q: I would like to take a course at a different university. How can I be sure that it will transfer to CSM?
A: Before taking a course at another institution, you should get prior approval for the course. Bring a course description, syllabus, and whatever other information which is available, along with a Prior Approval Form (available at the Registrar's Office) to Prof. Gus Greivel, CH 122. He will assist you in determining if your course is equivalent to a course at CSM.
