Teaching Assistantships

The Department has a limited number of Teaching Assistantships (TAs) to award to graduate students. These TAs are normally reserved for full-time students who have demonstrated academic excellence and who are pursuing a degree with a thesis component (MS (thesis option) or PhD). It is a school policy that students with TAs do not have full responsibility for teaching courses.

A full-time TA will require not more than 20 hours of work per week, on average. The duties of each TA will be specified in a contract.

Renewal of appointments is dependent on satisfactory academic performance as well as satisfactory performance in TA assignments. Since the funding at public assisted institutions can change from year to year, the Department cannot guarantee continued support.

Research Assistantships

Individual faculty members sometimes have positions available for Research Assistantships (RAs). The terms of these appointments, and qualifications for them, depend on the sponsoring agency and the faculty member. The average number of hours per week required is specified in each RA contract.

The CSM Graduate School Office has information on the availability of other types of financial aid.
