The MCS Department is pleased to announce a new program which will allow students to earn both a
Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree simultaneously.
|
| Features of the Combined Program: |
- Students will be able to complete a Non-Thesis M.S. in at least one additional year to the B.S.
Normally a Master's Degree takes two years to complete, but with the Combined
Program, students can use 6 credit hours towards both degrees. This translates to
10 graduate courses (30 credit hours) which the student takes in addition to the normal
undergraduate B.S. requirements.
- Students will not have to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) for admission to
the program.
- The application fee will be waived.
|
| Admission Criteria: |
- Students may not apply for the combined program until they have taken five or more Computer Science
classes at CSM (classes transferred from other universities will not be considered). The
following courses are considered to be Computer Science (CS) classes:
- MACS 261: Programming Concepts
- MACS 262: Data Structures
- MACS 306: Software Engineering
- MACS 341: Machine Organization & Assembly Language Programming
- MACS 358: Discrete Mathematics
- MACS 400: Principles of Programming Languages
- MACS 403: Database Management
- MACS 404: Artificial Intelligence
- MACS 406: Design & Analysis of Algorithms
- MACS 407: Introduction to Scientific Computing
- MACS 411: Expert Systems
- MACS 440: Parallel Computing
- MACS 441: Computer Graphics
- MACS 442: Operating Systems
- MACS 443: Advanced Programming Concepts Using Java
- MACS 471: Computer Networks
In addition to these courses, there may be other courses not in the catalog that are offered by
the MCS department that would be considered to be CS courses. If you are not certain about the
status of a class, contact Dr. Mehta.
- Students applying for this program must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher, and a GPA of 3.3 or
higher in their CS courses.
|
| Application Procedure: |
- Complete the Online Application available at
http://www.mines.edu/admiss/grad/onlineapp.html.
- Indicate that you are applying for a Non-Thesis M.S. in Mathematical & Computer Sciences.
(Students are not permitted to enroll for a Thesis-based M.S. under this program.)
- Students are not required to take the GRE, pay an application fee,
or arrange for transcripts or letters of recommendation, even though these may be requested
in the application form. There is also no particular need to write up a "Statement of Goals"
in the application except to briefly indicate that you are already a CS major at CSM
and that you are applying to the Combined B.S./M.S. program in CS. This will ensure that
your application will be correctly processed.
