Portfolio Process

Beginning with the class that entered in 1997, the McBride Honors Program has kept a portfolio for each student enrolled in the McBride program. The portfolio begins with the student's application to the program and is added to each semester to provide assessment of the student's experience in the McBride program and beyond. The contents of their portfolios consist of samples of the student's work in each seminar, their reflection on their selected work and their perception of their growth over the semester, and an assessment of their progress by their moderators. The steps for completing the portfolio process are as follows:

  1. Using the Mission and Goals, the moderators should identify key skills, knowledge and values which will be emphasized in their seminar and explicitly convey these to the students as well.
  2. During the course of the semester the student will select an assignment to include in the portfolio.
  3. The student will fill out the Portfolio Entry Form - Student and attach a brief (one-page) reflection, which addresses the questions on the Portfolio Entry form. These will be collected by moderators at a seminar prior to semesters end.
  4. During the course of the semester the moderator should review the portfolio of each student in his/her seminar and, if possible, schedule a tutorial with each student to discuss the current portfolio entry, focusing on the student's progress over the semester.
  5. The moderator will write a brief evaluation (not a grade) of each student and indicate whether the portfolio is satisfactory at that point.

Students completing the Honors Program will write a more lengthy evaluation of their growth over the past 3½ years. The essay and the portfolio will be read and evaluated by a group of 2 or 3 Tutorial Committee members who will then meet with the student for an exit interview/cumulative assessment.
