"I am a physical metallurgist and materials scientist most interested in the processing, microstructure, and properties of metals and alloys, particularly steels. This requires knowledge of alloying effects, solid-state phase transformations, microstructure and fine structure, strengthening and deformation mechanisms, and fracture mechanisms under various stress, strain, and environmental states. All of these fundamental aspects of alloy behavior relate to the practical aspects of alloy productions, themomechanical processing, heat treatment, and performance of low-, medium-, and high-carbon steels, stainless steels, and tool steels..Along with other faculty members, Dr. David K. Matlock and I have helped establish the School's Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center. The center was initiated through support from the National Science Foundation; now it is supported largely by companies which produce and use steel. All Center research is done as graduate student theses.
I have authored the book Steel: Heat Treatment and Processing Principles and coauthored Tool Steels, Fifth Edition, as well as authored or coauthored 300 technical papers. I have also served as President of ASM International and received several awards and honors based on my teaching and research.
