Colorado School of Mines was the first public institution of higher learning to open its doors in Colorado. Established in 1874 to serve the needs of the local mining industry, the School now has an international reputation in engineering and the applied sciences, with special expertise in the development and stewardship of the Earth's resources.

With a student body of 3,900, Mines has a student/faculty ratio of 15:1 and an average undergraduate class size of 27.
