The Major Course Sequence
69% of entering freshmen graduate
40% graduate in four years,
26% graduate in the fifth year, and 3% graduate in the sixth year
86% return for the sophomore year
Average freshman GPA in the first semester is about 2.9/4.00
Freshmen take an average of 16 credit hours in the first semester
Your major course sequence develops technical depth. For example, our engineering major gives you a chance to develop a specialty in civil, electrical, environmental, or mechanical engineering. Chemical engineering does the same by stressing chemical engineering fundamentals and applications. As another example, our math major offers specialties in applied math and computer science.

Also, in most departments, you can develop an area of special interest or minor outside your major.

Areas of Special Interest
Design-EPICS (Engineering Practices Introductory Course Sequence) is a two-semester, six credit-hour course sequence that develops teamwork, engineering design, and communication skills. Design-EPICS is required of all freshmen and sophomores.

In Design-EPICS, teams of four to five students develop solutions to real-world, open-ended problems similar to those in an engineering job. A mentor works with each EPICS team to guide the team and help them learn to make presentations and write reports about their work.

The design course sequence continues in the junior year and, in most majors, ends in the senior year with a capstone design course.
In addition to the 10 credit hours of courses required as part of the core curriculum, you must complete nine additional credit hours from any of the following thematic clusters: Humankind and Values; Society and Decisions; Environment, Resources, and Technology; or International Studies.

You can also choose minors in the humanities and social sciences in environmental policy, international political economy, the McBride Honors Program, and other areas.

Of course, an important focus of humanities and social science courses at CSM is to develop writing and communications skills. To further support this focus, writing intensive courses are included in each major course sequence.

The CSM Writing Center assists you with all your writing needs from course assignments to résumés, cover letters, and grant and scholarship applications. The Writing Center is a computerized, electronic classroom and offers one-on-one tutoring and on-line resources.
All CSM departments offer minors or areas of special interest. For a minor, you must complete at least 18 credit hours in a logical course sequence of which only three credit hours can be in your major area. For an area of special interest, you must complete 12 credit hours in a logical course sequence of which only three credit hours can be at the freshman or sophomore level. You may use your free electives to fulfill requirements for both minors and areas of special interest.
