At CSM, we base admission on the factors that are important for success. Among those are your grades, class rank, ACT or SAT score, high school or college courses, and in some cases, recommendations from teachers and counselors. We don't use any single criterion for admission, but the most important factor is your academic performance and course work. Financial need is not considered.

We do not require a writing test for admission, but we will accept the new SAT with writing or the ACT with or without the optional writing test.

Freshman Admission Criteria
In high school, you should take the following courses:
4 units of English
2 units of algebra
1 unit of geometry
1 unit of advanced mathematics (including trigonometry)
2 units of history or social studies
3 units of lab science (one unit must be chemistry or physics)
3 units of academic electives
You should rank in the upper third of your high school class and have strong SAT or ACT scores (see the Typical CSM New Student Profile on this page).
If you are home-schooled or if your high school does not rank or give grades, we will work with you to fairly evaluate your record. In these cases, though, we will usually give more weight to ACT or SAT scores.
AP and IB Credit
At CSM, we give the following credit for scores of 4 or 5 on the AP Exams, or for score of 5, 6, or 7 on the IB Exams:
calculus - up to one year
chemistry - up to one year
physics - credit is given after departmental review
any social science, English, history, etc. - one semester
