Energy Research, Physics Education Open House Slated for March 4


GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 6, 2007 – In conjunction with the March meeting of the American Physical Society in Denver, an open house will be held on the Colorado School of Mines campus from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 4. The event will showcase the energy research and physics education activities currently being conducted in Colorado.

Mines President Bill Scoggins and Dr. John Poate, vice president for research and technology, along with representatives from the University of Colorado, Colorado State University and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, will host the event on behalf of the newly-formed Colorado Renewable Energy Collaboratory – a partnership designed to coordinate interdisciplinary research and education related to renewable and alternative energy. 

Guests will have the opportunity to visit several research facilities on the Mines campus, including the Colorado Fuel Cell Center (www.state.co.us/oemc/programs/distributed/fuelcells/center.htm), a characterization laboratory for the Colorado Energy Research Institute, and a femtosecond spectroscopy laser laboratory. 

Attendees may also visit the state-of-the-art Physics Learning Studio and discuss the activities of the Physics Education Research Group from the University of Colorado, the largest such entity in the nation.

Additionally, a public lecture titled “Energy, CO2, and Global Change: Technology Research for a Greenhouse World,” will be presented by Dr. Franklin M. ( Lynn ) Orr, Jr., director of the Global Climate and Energy Project at Stanford University, at 7 p.m. in Friedhoff Hall in the Green Center.
