| Mines tops among Colorado schools in U.S. News & World Report college rankings GOLDEN, Colo., Aug. 17, 2007 – Colorado School of Mines was ranked 33rd among Top 50 Public National Universities, the highest ranking among Colorado schools, according to the 2008 edition of U.S. News & World Report 's America's Best Colleges released today. Also tops among Colorado schools, Mines was ranked as the 75th Best National University – a measure of the 262 American universities (164 public and 98 private) offering undergraduate majors, master's and doctoral degrees. In second place among Colorado schools, Mines received a rank of 52 for Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs at schools whose highest degree is a doctorate. For its annual rankings, U.S. News groups schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Mines was reclassified in 2006 and appeared in a different category of schools in America 's Best Colleges in 2007. Founded in 1874, Colorado School of Mines was established to serve the needs of the local mining industry.
