Mines Hosts Premier Oil Shale Symposium

GOLDEN, Colo., Sept. 26, 2007 – Colorado School of Mines and the Colorado Energy Research Institute (CERI) will host the 27th Oil Shale Symposium Oct. 15-19.

The Symposium — the revival of a series hosted 24 times at Mines and once in Beijing during the last rush to evaluate oil shale from 1964 to 1992 — is the premier global venue for discussion of the development of the oil shale resource.

More than 350 attendees are expected including representatives of Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Petrochina, Total, Petrobras, and smaller operators and technology companies.

The potential exists for the resources in the Green River Formation in Colorado , Utah , and Wyoming to exceed one trillion barrels — essentially equal to the amount of petroleum produced to date in the world. However, it is not yet clear those barrels can be produced economically and in an environmentally conscious way.

Technical sessions will review development of oil shale resources worldwide including research and development, impact analysis, regulatory framework, technology, environmental and socioeconomic impacts, geology and geophysics, and project and program status.

The Symposium will consist of a broad overview session Oct. 15, two days of technical sessions in many different program areas Oct. 16-17 and an optional field trip Oct. 18-19. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory will also host a workshop on Environmental Issues and Research Needs on Oct. 18.
