Department of Interior Official to Open Mines Oil Shale Symposium

GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 9, 2007 – Foster Wade, deputy assistant secretary of the Department of the Interior, will address the opening session of the 27th Oil Shale Symposium at Colorado School of Mines at 1:25 p.m. on Oct. 15 in the Green Center, Metals Hall, 924 16th St., Golden.

Mines and the Colorado Energy Research Institute (CERI) are hosting the Symposium Oct. 15-19.

The Symposium — the revival of a series hosted 24 times at Mines and once in Beijing during the last rush to evaluate oil shale from 1964 to 1992 — is the premier global venue for discussion of the development of the oil shale resource.

More than 350 attendees are expected including representatives of Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Petrochina, Total, Petrobras, and smaller operators and technology companies.

Founded in 1874, Colorado School of Mines was established to serve the needs of the local mining industry. Today, the School has an international reputation for excellence in both engineering education and the applied sciences with special expertise in the development and stewardship of the Earth's resources.
