Seniors at Mines Engineer Creative Projects

GOLDEN, Colo., April 9, 2007 - At the Colorado School of Mines Division of Engineering Senior Design Trade Fair April 10, 8 a.m. to noon, 170 students will showcase 31 creative projects in Steinhauer Field House, 1300 Illinois St. in Golden. The event is open to the public.

Students have worked in multidisciplinary engineering teams, utilizing their ingenuity in civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental specialties, to cooperatively find solutions to a variety of engineering challenges.

Projects include:

  • A working prototype of an emergency high-rise building evacuation system
  • Samples of a building material made out of waste paper
  • A design for an IPOT, an individual Portable Transport System that is inexpensive, lightweight, portable and high strength
  • A design for a steam generation plant fueled by forest biomass from beetle-kill
  • A fully autonomous mowing robot to cost-effectively control noxious weeds in state and national parks
  • A bicycle-powered pump for irrigating farmland in developing villages in West Africa.
