The Electrical Engineering graduate program connects you with faculty from around the world who are committed to discovering optimal solutions related to global power issues. It is imperative that research is conducted in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative manner. From traditional power systems research to renewable energy technolgies and research the program addresses the real-world problems of advanced engineering and technology. Research in conjunction with course offerings prepares you to become a leader in industry, academia and government.

Competitive financial support packages (including stipend, health insurance and full tuition) are available to qualified candidates in the form of research assistantships (RAs), fellowships, and teaching assistantships (TAs). Applicants seeking financial support should indicate so within the online application. In addition to applying, applicants interested in support should contact the faculty members whose research interests parallel their own. Though not mandatory, applicants are encouraged to submit the application by the deadline to insure priority consideration for fall semester financial support.

The main research focus lies in the following two areas:

  • Sensing, Communications and Control: An interdisciplinary research area that encompasses the fields of control systems, wireless communications, signal and image processing, robotics, and mechatronics. Focus areas include intelligent and learning control systems, fault detection and system identification, compressive sensing, wireless communication circuits, computer vision and pattern recognition, sensor development, mobile manipulation and autonomous systems. Applications can be found in renewable energy and power systems, materials processing, sensor and control networks, bio-engineering, intelligent structures and geosystems.
  • Energy Systems and Power Electronics: A research area focused on both fundamental and applied research in the interrelated fields of conventional electric power systems and electric machinery, renewable energy and distributed generation, energy economics and policy issues, power quality, power electronics and drives. The overall scope of research encompasses a broad spectrum of electrical energy applications including investor-owned utilities, rural electric associations, manufacturing facilities, regulatory agencies and consulting engineering firms.
